This article was written at the same page about the era of diggital cinema that I wrote in the post titled "R.I.P FIlm Projectors".

The artricle titled "Independent cinema icon is at a digital crossroads" is focus on those non-chain cinemas that is hard to convert to digital.

Here is the article:

 -

Unfortunatelly there is no a DIGITAL version of this article.

Basically it tells about how this small cinema cannot convert to digital because the price of a digital projector is above his budget (around $80,000) and he is not sure that a digital projector can run for more than 5 years like his analog projector that has been with him for 35 years!

However the problem not only that, it is that studios have decresed the number of 35mm prints from time to time so he cannot show more films. He already offers to buy the prints (instead of renting) from the studios but they never heard this option.

With this current conditon, his cinema will die eventually.

Hey Winbert
Which Toronto cinema does this article refer to?
I wonder if its one of the last remaining REP cinemas.

Foa ny forum member who ever make it to Toronto you can still see 16mm screenings every Friday at The Trash Palace.
Cheers
Terry

Hi Terry,

It says "Highland Cinema". Unfortunately I don't have the paper anymore but it was on Jan 5th edition of Toronto Star (Entertainment section).

If I found it I will keep it for you.

BTW. I need the "Oaaa eee ooo" 16mm if you know what I mean [Wink] . My office has asked me to return it to the library .

cheers,

I have the film in question.
When do you need it back? Are you in Washington these days?
Cheers

Winbert, here in Italy there are some distributors that, if they don't have a 35mm prin available, charge the owner of the theather of the printing cost (roughly between 3000 Eur to 5000 Eur according to the importance of the title) and consider this amount as a deposit for the rental.
Of course, if you earn less than that amount, you will not have your money back, while if you earn more you will have to pay only the difference.

Of course, some little theather owners don't risk in anticipating that amount for renting a film, with all that is implied in not renting some succesfull title.

I think I know the Highland Cinema. It is in Kinmount, Ontario, we have friends who have a cottage near there and they always go when they are vacationing. Apparently they have a museum attached with vintage equipment - they keep telling me its just the kind of place I'd love. I'll have to give it a visit this summer.
Here is a link with more info
