My wife has ran into a different kind of ebay payment to her, and I haven't seen this kind before, and we need some advice.

My wife just had a successful auction fo 20.00 dollars. The person has made the payment, it shows up in her paypal, but it says that the payment won't clear until February 5th! Is this some kind of bank draft or something?

Also, how should we deal with the shippage of the item? It would seem kind of harsh for the person to have to wait until Febriuary 5th , but my wife was wondering ...

" What if I ship this to the buyer, they recieve it a good week or more before the payment clears, (as it is only going to down to Calfornia from Idaho), and then, since they already have the item they think to themselves, "Goodie, now I'll cancel the payment since I got what I want!"

It's a legitimate question. Any thoughts folks?

Hi Osi
Sounds like an e-cheque to me,what I do is send buyer a message informing them the clearance date given by paypal and stating that you will send the item once paypal have cleared funds, there is no way you should send the item until this date,FYI lots of sellers won't accept this form of payment.

Regards

Tommy

Hi Osi,
you should not post the item off until payment has arrived fully in your account.
The buyer has chosen to pay with this method and will have been advised of the timescale.
Also I'm sure eBay's own recommendation will be to wait until payment clears

I paid for an item recently via e-check (yes, that's what this is), and the seller politely informed me of the 7-day hold and promptly shipped the day the hold lifted.

This seems like an unnecessary bank holdover practice. If anything, an E-check should be FASTER than otherwise!

So go for it -- safely.

Hi Osi
An e-cheque is used by paypal when there is'nt enough funds available, the buyer has to top up the balance,so be patient and more importantly WAIT!!

Ok first of all, Ebay will hold the payment for 21 days then release it. If you provide the shipping info to paypal
it will be less time. Plus if the buyer leaves positive FB it will be released even quicker.

Now as for shipping, you can ship the item and paypal will deduct it from your auction payment when it is released.

The reason for the hold is to make sure the iten gets shipped, and the buyer is happy with it. If not then ebay will refund the payment to buyer after items return to seller. This is under ebays buyer protection so they won't have to use their money.

This policy is being done with all new accounts until the seller has a proven good record. I know all this info because
my wife just started selling on ebay 4 months ago. All the info is on ebays site. I hope this helps.

What a bloody f**k up on ebays part!

It penalizes the seller for Pete's sake and it makes a situation easy for the buyer to get the item, enjoy it for a day or two, and then just say that they don't like it, keep it and sday they shipped it back!

I don't like it. My wife will inform the buyer that the item will be shipped when the payment clears. I'll be damned if my wife will be set up for some "potential jerk" to rip her off.

(I say "potential jerk" as the person may be quitew a nice person, after all). [Smile]

From Ebay policy on "Payment Holds":

quote:
When some sellers receive payments, we may hold the money in a pending balance for up to 21 days to help make sure that there are funds in the seller's account to cover potential refunds or claims. The funds may be released early if PayPal determines that the transaction has been fulfilled and customers are satisfied.

While funds are pending, the money belongs to you but isn't available to spend or withdraw.

The buyer can't really cancel anything. The payment has already been made.
I don't see what the big deal is, to be honest. Why do you think you can possibly be ripped off?
I have a feeling the buyer may not appreciate having to wait til Feb 5. After all it's not his or her fault that paypal have held the funds in your account. As far as they're concerned, they've made the payment as requested.

Nor do I, it seems pretty silly. Besides, we don't keep any extra funds sitting in our paypal account., Once money is in there, it's immediately transferred to our bank account, but being that ebay can no doubt check to see our balance (well, I don't know if they can actually do that, that would seem to be one step away from withdrawing money), there should be no problem.

Well I won't harp on it, and the wife has just sent the buyer the info. Lets see if the buyer raises a stink about it. No offense against the buyer, (especially if they belong to this film forum [Smile] ), but if they didn't want this kind of circumstances, it would have been much easier to just do a regular payment.

Osi,
I think you're missing my point.
From what I've read, it has nothing to do with the buyer. He or she has made a regular payment through Paypal. It's Paypal who have put the hold on your funds. It's not the buyers fault.

You have a point there, my wife and I will bump heads on this some more.

UPDATE ...

WE'll end up sending this off on either Saturday or Monday, but the funny thing is, this would have been sent out the very next day after the payment was actually made. Ebay may be just "holding onto the money", but as far as we're concerned, the "payment complete" in our paypal is really only a "promissory", as the payment really iasn't in our hands ...

it's in ebays ...

and what if the buyer should think,
"Hey! I don't want this after all."

Does Paypal then withhold our payment, give it back to the buyer and we only wait around, hoping the buyer is decent enough to ship our print back to us, mind you, in whatever condition they have left it after viewing it?
