I cant believe its been 10 years since I bought this 30th Anniversary Edition on blu-ray. The 40th Anniversary Edition is now available and sounds good.
I still have somewhere, the Super8 400footer but unfortunately it faded into the sunset long ago.
I first watched "Close Encounters" at the cinema when it first came out, to be honest not a favourite of mine at the time, however over the years I have got to like it a lot more. Its interesting to watch a movie from the 70s...the cars..no cell phones..small TVs etc. The scenes where Richard Dreyfuss rips out the garden plants, and throws them through the kitchen window are typical Spielberg...fun to watch, anyway has anyone here bought the 40th Edition? ...screen shots from last night..

I first saw this at the Classic cinema Scunthorpe. The manageress told me they'd spent £500 renovating the stereo system specially for it and advised me to go early as there'd be 'a queue a mile long'. On the Saturday I joined the queue (six of us) and enjoyed the film on a fantastic single screen cinema showing. I've never forgotten this film as, when the space ship appears in it's full golden light twinkling glory, I was hit by an emotion I'd long forgotten. A sense of awe suddenly enveloped me for a second, and I realised I'd forgotten what it was like. Great film which I still enjoy. By the way Graham, I view with envy your screen grabs. Most impressive. So very sorry we didn't meet on our visit to N.Z. last year. Perhaps next time!

Your always welcome Dave
Allan although not full HD, this is the projector is what I use for all the screen shots. Its a Panasonic PT-AX200E projector. It must be around 10 years old might, be more. I bought it new and its been great. I did see years ago a comparison between this model and the more expensive Panasonic full HD projector using the same video source, and the full HD one was certainly better.
However I am happy with this projector, although I would like one that could give me the full HD plus 3D that would be but that aint going to happen
Here are a couple of photos of the projector, when I put a movie on for others, I always set up the projector before they arrive, plus cue and hold the start of the movie on a small TV when I am about to start. Its simply lights dim....press play...pull fishing line cord...da da

My brother bought me the 4k special edition boxset for my last Birthday, the 4k transfer is really excellent, Sony/Columbia have really done a nice job on the 4k Blu-ray.

This was one of the very first blurays that i bought, (though I've only bought less than 20), and i had to admit that the image was really good. Sometimes 70's films suffer from what i just call "70's color scheme" and i was happt to see that this film didn't look dated, beyond old hair styles and such.
