We went to The Enzian today, as they had a special (tribute to Debbie Reynolds) showing of Singin' In The Rain. The house was packed, and the audience just reveled in this glorious film, breaking out in applause after each of the amazing song and dance numbers, and roaring with laughter at the wonderful Jean Hagen ('Laura Lamont')comedy situations. I have seen this film more times than I can count, but I have to say that Today's showing with a large engaged audience was my most enjoyable viewing.
After the show I spoke to Henry Maldanado, one of the directors of The Enzian. I told Henry that IMO nothing close to Singin' In The Rain would ever be made again, the film is just peerless. Henry agreed and said that films like this are like jewels in your pocket, to be carried with you through life, and to remain immortal.
A nice thought.

Excellent, Paul!

I got Singin' in the Rain on DVD for Christmas and an Epson VP too. The two will have to get together some time soon!

Being a newbie to this one was an eye-opener. There are a lot of old standards that all of a sudden come from someplace.

Best part is my kid and I now break out in:

Moses supposes his toses are roses.
-but Moses supposes erroneously!

Steve, the blu ray of this film is just stunning.
Back around 2002 I purchased a new low fade S8 print from Derann and it is just an awesome quality print. I re-recorded the sound from a DVD and now it also sounds amazing. One of the S8 films that I get immense joy from projecting.

When I worked for a film lab in Los Angeles in the film vault I was also their projectionist. They gave me 3 -35mm reels to practice on.
A Tom and Jerry cartoon in Scope.
Then Reel 4 of the Empire Strikes Back in Scope.
And then the dance number from "Singing in the Rain".
I would lace up the projector and then go sit in the theatre and watch it. I can imagine how it must have been to see it in the theatre in its heyday. Films like that lose so much on the little screen. And it was a beautiful print as well. Colors were spot on.

I saw the London stage production (Tommy Steele & \Roy Castle). I looked at the sound desk in the interval the various radio mike channels were labeled with the character names The settings on the graphic equaliser to get Leena's voice right were severe to say the least, all sorts of frequencies were enhanced/removed.
