Sir David Lean was born in South Croydon in 1908 and spent his early years there. This will be celebrated by the David Lean Cinema at a special Croydon Heritage Festival event on 24 June at 2.30pm.
A rare 35mm presentation of Lean’s 1945 romantic classic BRIEF ENCOUNTER will feature a pristine 2009 print struck following the BFI National Archive’s 2008 restoration. This will be followed by a discussion/Q&A on the distinctive qualities of Lean's films and the experience of working with him. Patrick Cadell, the Assistant Director on Lean’s 1984 (and final) film ‘A Passage to India’ will participate. Cadell might contrast Lean’s remarkable skills with those of Lean enthusiast Steven Spielberg, who he worked with on Raiders of the Lost Ark. Considering the turbulent production history of ‘A Passage to India’, I’m sure Patrick will have some fascinating stories.
Tickets are £8 (concessions £6.50). If any Forum members can come, I’d be delighted to welcome you to this 68 seat, non-profit community cinema. Tickets can be booked online via: www.davidleancinema.org.uk
