We seem to be going through a bit of a lull but I think this happenned at about the same time last year so perhaps everyones away on Holiday or doing other things in the warm weather.

Having said that, the evenings are starting to draw in in the UK so it will soon be show time !! [Smile]

So where are you all and what have you all been doing??

Hi Mike,

Just got what seems to be a very nice Blackhawk print of L&H's "The Music Box". Am in a bind though, It's on an 800 foot reel and the largest take-up reel I have in house at the moment is only 400 feet! Relief is on the way though, bigger reels should be on my door step this week. In the meantime it just sits and waits!

On the home production front I just edited together a very nice Kodachrome film I initially shot almost two years ago. I'm very pleased with the results, and since the thing fairly screams for a sound track I'm considering getting it striped. (It is Bolex bevel spliced; actually the first film I've done this way). You've recently had very good experience with EVT magnetics, right? Do you have any specifics (price, turnaround time, services?)

Thanks!

Hello Steve

Yep, had a good result from EVT. I sent off a 50ft reel and had to pay their minimum charge to get it striped up with main and balance stripe but think it only came to about 5 or 6 GBP. Turn around was within a week [in the UK] and the quality of the stripe is great. I put a live sound track on it that I had recorded with the Elmo synch-sound set-up and it gave a very good account of itself.

Do you want contact details, or do you have them already?

Mike

All I have is their e-mail address. Anything else would probably help!

What do you think they'd charge for a 150 footer?

Thanks!

Hi, Mike, I've been shopping for a good Halloween feature. Also, reworking my screening room which has become a film warehouse before I've even finished it. I'm going to build an out building and climatize it for film and theatrical memoribilia storage.
I just got in a copy of Blood Beast Terror made by Hammer. It could be a candidate for Halloween.
And, Ive been killing small animals in a dark room and preparing them for the barbie! [Razz] [Eek!] [Smile]

Ive been shooting Double Super 8 with a Canon DS8 camera loaded with Kodachrome 25. I want to see if it is that much a difference over Super 8 and Kodachrome 40. If it isn't...Ebay time!
I am also trying to sync up the DVD of Game of Death to the film. However the problem I ran into is that I was told that the German versions of these films were easy to sync up to because when they did the 4x400 parter they just transferred the first 20 minutes of each reel.
Well, that isn't true! The film has numerous cuts..even in the titles! And the fight scenes are slightly edited...almost as if it were done by the MPAA!
But...I did get it to sync together completely for about 3 minutes at one point.

Hi Mike,
I have not been doing any film collecting activity or read the Forum in the past 10 days. Unfortunately, hurricane Charley was still a Category 2 hurricane when it reached Orlando on Friday August 13. The eye path went right over my house, and caused great damage to houses in the area where I live. An 80 FT oak tree was ripped out of the ground and landed on my house, causing considerable damage to the roof and front walls. Fortunately we were out of the house at the time. There are trees down and power lines down everywhere and many peoples homes are beyond repair. My wife and I were living in a hotel for 10 days but we are now back living in the part of the house which is undamaged. On the bright side, my film equipment and films appear to be undamaged, and now that about 50% of the front of the house is wrecked, I will have the excuse to rebuild it with a dediacted home theatre.
I never want to see a hurricane again- it was really scary. I can't even imagine what a category 5 must be like.

Spent this summer buying Standard8 projectors, two in fact.Bought an almost new, hardly run in Eumig P8 Nova Auto.Retired the auto-threadas underneath the cowling it is bog-standard P8.Had to change the drive beltas it disintegrated into putty! This machine is so unused there was no dust inside the mechanism! Originalbox and instruction book (still in its plastic sleeve)and not a bit of paintmissing anywhere.Runs beautifully too.

Next on the list is a real rarity: A Standard8 TOEI Talkie mag/opt machine. No,the optical is not a misprint,it was a Japanese format that never happened. The magnetic side is the usual 56 frames seperation.
Again thisprojector spentmost of its forty years in a cupboard.Again all that was required is a replacement lamp and a gentle run and is a little (if little known) beauty.

These are in addition to keeping all the other gear rolling.I have to pay attention to my ST1200HD Mag/Opt as the shutter rubber is gone guey, but checking the history files here I now have this in order.

I also have to admit to (wait for it!) buying a 16mm B&H TQIII Mag/opt playback. It is a sriteley five year old and the newest projector I own!
And yes,they do get used!

Well, it's great to hear that cine stuff is still going on everywhere. [Smile]

Paul, bad news about the hurricane! Sorry to hear about the damage to your house but, as you say, at least your film collection is ok [Big Grin] . I like the idea of taking the opportunity to build a home theatre, something I have often thought about but never so far had the time, resources and space to do it. I have however got designs on doing something with my garage at some point but the trouble is that my other interest is ancient VWs' so I need somewhere to keep my Bug! [Roll Eyes]

Dan, good to hear that you have a got a Halloween feature sorted out, not so sure about killing small animals in a darkened room though, have you been talking to Mr Milman??

Alan, I too have been doing far more film shooting than projecting over the summer months and have spent some time playing around with double system sound filming, I seem to have a problem with the pulse signal from my camera at the moment though so am hoping that when the time is right I might be able to get Kev' to cast his eye over it for me. Actually I have a whole load of stuff that I would like Kev to cast his eye over so better start talking nicely to him.....

Barry, a standard 8 machine with optical sound? that must be a rarity! were there ever any films produced that you can use on it?

Shall be thinking about BFCC soon, hopefully going to have a table up there with Rob Koeling [from the forum] so shall be expecting you guys to come and buy all our excess cine gear! [Big Grin]

Mke

Mike:Re the Std8 optical. The quick answer was a resounding no!The reason is that it required the variable aperture plate fitted to the TOEI to be altered to a smaller frame area to allow for the photographic track. On Std8 that was a disaster, hence Super8 optical (as little as it was) was more acceptable due to the smaller sprocket holes.
As I understand it,several specially made optical films were produced in Japan but never ever saw the light of day commercially unlike the standard 'Std8' magnetic films.

Mike, I'm jealous of you as I still have not been able to try my Elmo camera and SR1 recorder out yet due to the lack of connection lead. [Frown]

Kev.

I think we should come to some sort of arrangement Kev'. How long a loan of my lead would you want in exchange for casting an eye over my equipment? [Wink]

mike
