I was wondering if anyone has experienced I problem I recently encountered. I picked up an old Hammer feature on Ebay (originally released by Powell in the 70's) and when I projected it there were black specs on the image. As I do with all my new films, I decided to give it a good cleaning. As I gave it a coat of Film Renew I noticed as well as getting off many of the particles on the picture it appeared the soundtrack was coming off as well. When I played the film back the soundtrack was getting choppy in a few places with the volume wavering. Can a film cleaner wipe off a professionally applied soundstripe?! I'm upset because it's a film I had been looking for for sometime now I feel I have damaged it by simply cleaing it! Just wondering if anyone has an explanation for this...

Brian, YES, i have experienced that same sort of trouble, several times actually! Overtime, some VERY DRY films for some reason lose the stripe.....I think it mUST have something to do with the adhensive used. I have a picolo film ...digest from the 70's which lost the first 3 minutes of the stripe...but, stayed intact, simply "fell" off the film. I repasted it...but what a terrible task. Another film, I noticed black "dirt" on a film, then realized the track has/is falling off. After cleaning, it simply removed what was left. I beleive it has to do with having the film become DRY and BRITTLE over time, since, the film which had this happen to, were in that same condition. ANY THOUGHTS?

Hi yes this can happen easily, often if the stripe is glued on and the adehisve lifts, it can happen even without cleaning.
Also on paste applied stripe like the waltons depending on the cleaner sometimes an aweful lot of stripe will lift off and show on the cloth etc and it will sometimes reduce the sound but its uusally OK with that.
Best bet is LPP kodak prestripe stock that seems to be very solid with the strip, and the modern stripe is solid although often bitty and even holey so can wear your heads etc.
The agaf striped stuff of a few years ago was often very bitty.

Something like this happened to me a couple of years ago-

I had a 400 foot reel of ads and trailers that had gotten wet (from water). It had actually been wet for about a week when I discovered it, so I quickly thought that maybe if I clean it, it will be O.K.

Using a film cleaner that I had used plenty of times with no problems, I cleaned the film. Upon projecting, I noticed that the picture was fine, but the volume kept dipping out and back.

Upon close examination of the film, I noticed that parts of the sound stripe were coming off. Not as a whole strip, but like it was disolving.

I came to the conclusion that the mixture of water and the chemical used for film cleaning caused the reaction that damaged the track.

Other than this incident, I have not had any problems with film cleaner damaging the track.
