I am in the process of designing my new home theater, and am wondering how to implement motorised masking of the screen for the various film format ratio's (4:3, 16:9, 2.66:1). Does anybody have a recommended way to achieve this in a simple manner, other than spending a small fortune on a commercially available system. Any suggestions are most welcome.

Top and bottom masking can be done using a roller blind. Four cords required (i.e. two at either end) to suspend both masks. One cord wraps one way around the roller, the other the opposite way; therefore when one goes up the other goes down. There's a photo of this on www.bfcc.biz/homecinemas2.html
Side masking can be done using an ordinary corded curtain track.

Curtain motors can be attached to each of these for motorized operation. Automation is something that can be added once the installation appears to be working.
