Have just got a Eumig S802 Super & Single machine. Lovely runner, but then after about 200ft the picture becomes very unsteady, like it's lost the upper loop. Have checked gate...it seems clean. Help!!

Hi Simon,
It is very strange that the first 200ft would run normally, and then you start getting chatter. One possibility is that the claw is not perfectly centered on the film perforations and/or there is some shrinkage of the film. Try lubing the film , this may help a lot, particularly if the film is very old. If this does not help, try adjusting the gate edge guide slightly in and out to see if you can get the projector to run more smoothly. Sometimes if the claw position is not perfectly centered on the perforations the projector will not like handling film which has shrunk a little bit.

Could it be that the upper spool arm spindle tension is too high? As the reel of film gets smaller it could be getting harder and harder for the upper sprocket to pull the film is.

I have the dual guage version of this machine(s802D) - if you take the back off there is a greased friction drive with pressure adjustment. I assume the S802 is the same as the S802D. You might find the grease has dried up. or you might need to loosen off the tension a little.

The other Eumig I have is the later series S936. That started to slow down badly after it had warmed up - I foudn that the grease ont he nylon gears had dried up and they were noit running well - after re-greasing it it runs perfectly.

I don't suppose there's a splice in the film at the point where it starts to jitter!!!

A poorly made splice will cause this effect every time.

Loss of loop leading to jitter can result from a poorly-made splice or from sprocket-hole damage. It is ulikely to be feed-spool tension, since this would have to be way out to overcome the control imposed by the first sprocket.

Make sure that the projector film path is clean and lubricated with a spray polish. If the film becomes jittery at the same point each time, mark it (china-graph pencil on base side) and check it for damage between rewinds or in an editor. Look for spices, brokenthrough sprocket holes, or sprocket-holes worn at the edge that the claw engages.

Tim, what a co-incidence, altough nothing to do with a Eumig, i have EXACTLY the same problem with an Eike(elf)NT1, i put it onto the 16mm yak but had no response. With my 16mm it ran perfect with no problems until i gave it to a so0-called elf engineer here in Plymouth,(recommended to me), for some reason he actually replaced my film gate assy with a second hand one and i have had this problem ever since. The 200-400ft are perfect and then the picture begins to dance up and down then gets worse until it becomes impossible to watch, therefore it sounds to me as though there is a gate problem.
On past Eumigs we had a similar problem when on STD 8mm and this was resolved by replacing the STD 8 pressure pad and gate.
Hope this may help a little.
Does yours do it on both super and Standard? [Wink]
