Firstly, can I just say, a big thank you for all the people that have contacted me with regards to the 'enough is enough' post.

I really do appreciate ALL of the emails I have received, and believe that I am getting closer and closer to the person(s) that are spreading these rumours

but anyway I digress -

In one of the posts, Dimitrios asks about a few features that he would like to see released on 8mm.

My question is 2 fold:

What would you like to see released on 8mm in a feature film format -
and
would you prefer extracts - as we have been releasing - or another feature film?

Kind regards

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

There has been a lot of interest expressed here for Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. You got the "Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper" film that played before it and it's been requested in my house every time the projector comes out this last month! (You have my 4 year old going around asking "Ka-boooom???"!)

If I can speak for myself, I think "The Incredibles" released feature length would be spectacular on Super-8! Although I know that there would be liscensing problems with the older W&Gs, I think "Grand Day Out" would be a great 600 Footer!

I like extracts the most when they are something well self contained, as in the example of the "Fantasia" extracts. However, in the best case, I'd prefer full features.

Adrian,

Thank you so much for asking! I know many have expressed their views in the earlier topic but I'd like to say what a pleasure it is to have you posting on the Forum. Derann is such an important part of what this forum is about and I know that together we can keep this wonderful hobby alive and vibrant.

I know there are two sides of the feature/extract viewpoint. There are many who love owning a full length version (myself included) but the price is out of the range of many collectors. I'm not sure if this is a viable idea, but would it be possible to release a film in both full length and digest versions? I realize it's easier to release an extract as opposed to an actual cut down, but I know many Forum members would be thrilled if a well edited 600' Derann digest were to be released.

Not long ago we had a thread in which many agreed that the next title they'd like to see put out would be "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit". I'm sure you'd have quite a few advance orders.

Doug

PS-Adrian, I hope you don't mind, but I used my super moderator powers to change the topic heading. I believe the current title will let everyone know what an important topic this is.

Adrian,
Great initiative to open this thread!!!
I would personally prefer to see some new features being released on 8mm. Perhaps also from genres not so commonly seen like crime/action, comedy, mystery, sci-fi, western.
Speaking of variety there are e.g. far more musicals released on Super-8 compared to dramas. And a drama can also be very entertaining too, like e.g. La vita e bella with Benigni.
Speaking of titles I'd love to see in my ideal Super-8 world
Pirates of the Caribbean (it would make a great trilogy after your releases of Mutiny on the Bounty and Master & Commander), Amelie, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Fight Club, Batman, Blade Runner and the list goes on....
Again great to open this discussion on your side!

Adrian,

Your gonna' be in a minefield with your question, and I reckon you'll get at least 101 titles, as we all like different kinds of film, but it will eventually come down to the old chestnut, Source Material , you know what I mean!

I do believe collectors are getting a bit fed up with recent trailers, although I believe the "Wallace & Gromit" trailer has sold well, this would be an ideal feature, if it comes along, running just 1 1/2 hours, a lot more affordable than say "M&C" to the average collector.

Still I know you and your team will come up with something special, as last years release of "M&C" prooved there is still a market for F/L 8mm features, even long ones.

Posted by Kevin Faulkner (Member # 6) on June 01, 2006, 04:20 PM:

Adrian, a number of people said that after the success of M&C we would like to see "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit"

That would be a really good and not so long feature to release. I personally would like to see a few extracts from "Lord of the Rings" maybe like you have done with the Matrix and Gladiator.

Kev.

"Yes, Rico... Kaboom..."
Adrian, you've got a "reel" winner here. I'm all for short subjects and extracts.
I've said it many moons ago but any of the W&G shorts would make perfects 600 footers.
Or the opening scene of "Revenge of the Sith"...
No particular opinion regarding a feature as I'd rather purchase several shorts instead of one particular film. Still, Curse of the Were Rabbit would be a good choice.
But I know all of this depends on the source material.

Anything in 'CinemaScope' would be good, after all it's what cinema was invented for [Wink]

I especially like the idea of 'Pirates of the Caribbean', what a great adventure film and Scope too, imagine it sync pulsed!! [Razz]

I have always longed for a scope/stereo print or extract for Mel Gibsons Aussie action flick MAD MAX 2- The Road Warrior. Those who had the opportunity to see this in the cinema back in the 80's will know what I mean. The cinematography is superb, and the score is breathtaking. And action packed!!!!

Also, (I may have mentioned this before)-

I preferr extracts over features mainly due to the money. However, if the features could be packaged and sold per reel (like "That's Dancing"), then I would be much more likely to purchase a whole feature, even if it took me a year to get the full movie.

Also, how about some extracts from existing Derann negatives, like Poltergiest, Die Hard, or another Terminator 2? [Smile]

Nick.

P.S.- Add me to the Wallace and Grommit list!

Adrian, it's obviously hard to please everyone's wants on that issue, but being the eternal b/w classics fan that I am,I'd be really interested to see some more of these available on 8mm.The
most characteristic title of that sort that I have in mind is 'Charge of the Light Brigade'.
Of course, this poses questions like how one can find negatives for such an old movie, and in what condition they will be,let alone how much they'd cost...But still, one can hope to see some of that old stuff again-after all, hope's the last to die...

WOW !!

What a response in such a short space of time - keep 'em coming

Just a few questions (and observations) though...

It would seem the Wallace & Gromit is a popular choice - good choice I might add. I too am a huge fan of these. Nick Park certainly deserved the Oscar.

Steve - The Incredibles - yes I agree, that would look great on 8mm. At 115 mins it might be a bit pricey though, but I will find out how much something might cost to put out.
I really hope that the rumoured 'Incredible 2 - Revenge of the UnderMiner' goes ahead though, as I loved the first one.

Lord of the Rings extracts is a great idea, I think, as we have done well on the other modern extracts. Thanks Kevin

Dave, I hope the Get Carter is not the 2000 version (sorry couldn't resist that).

Star Wars .... George Lucas .... not all the 'force' in the world will let that happen.

Scope shorts have always sold well, and I also like the idea of buying a film reel by reel but Black & White is very tricky thesedays.

(Just as a side thought - Dimitrios - probably the reason for so many musicals on 8mm, was because Dad loved the musicals -
but it would be interesting to see how many Derann released in relation to the other film companies like - Thunderbird, Powell, Regent, Erne, Moviedrome, Quality Products, Portland, Jubilee Films, Movieland International, Lees Cameras, LGP, Jeff Films, Portland, LA Films, CEC, Mountain, Dane/Highgate and DCR (thanks Mike from Silvo Screen for that list)

Kind regards

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Would Chicago the Musical
or a streamlined version which is less than
113 minutes work out?

I would appreciate musical extracts, that create a running
narrative in order to streamline the feature as an alternative.
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger
are knockouts.

A streamlined Madagascar with those nutty Penguins.

Otherwise: The Matrix.

Any extracts or a streamlined version from the new Kong?

Another older favorite is
A League of Their Own.
I enjoy this because it has
great acting, and it's a fun film.
But I'm afraid that it may not have
universal appeal.

Streamlined Scope versions of
Albert Finney in Scrooge.

Is there ability to create
any of the first Bond films
on 8mm? From Russia with Love
is very good.

Adrian,

Personally I would have loved to have seen "Back To The Future" on 8mm. I remember once I had an Optical 8mm print of this, stunning quality, just one draw back, it had Japanese sub-titles which appeared to go a third of the way up the screen image, in bold red charecters to boot, to say it was a little off putting is saying it mildly. Off course this would be a flat release, I think for a scope release my favourite of the recent films would be "X-Men", the 1st 2 films were brilliant, I enjoyed the new one, but they tried packing too much story into 104 minutes.

Adrian,

"W&G: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" seems to be a very popular title with many German collectors as well, as I have heard in a lots of conversations.
I also like two of the titles from Dimitrios Kremalis' list very much: "Pulp Fiction" and "Amélie" (Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain). Both of them are in 'scope!
Regarding shorts, I would be so happy to have Steve Martins's first appearance on the big screen, "The Absent-Minded Waiter", in my collection. It was nominated for an Academy Award and should be very affordable at a running time of six or seven minutes.

Shorty,

new full-length prints of "A&C Meet Frankenstein" were around in Germany by the end of the 1980's or in the early 1990's (with German track of course). It seems that full-length prints were also struck by JEF. If I see one of these prints offered, I will e-mail you.

Hello,

I 'm also interested in the full feature version of W&G: Curse....

I think this would be a nice choise. But there are many other titles that would be great on S8. For example: Jurassic park 3, the film is not so long but very good, so it would not be so much expensive.

Lord of the rings why not the full feauture of part one, I like full versions of good films.

As one would expect, collectors preferences spread wide along
the spectrum. For example, my all time favourite film is
" Cinema Paradiso ".The whole content of this movie, is very close to my heart, due to childhood living experience.
Adrian, perhaps you could investigate as to the feasability of
acquiring rights and availability of negatives for a number of
titles and issue a list of those. Then it would be up to us
collectors to let you know which one or ones we would be commited to purchase. Regards to all.

I would like to see Derann getting away from the modern CGI and animation stuff for their next release. I for one have had my bellyful of them right now. What we need is a pristine S8 print of a live action film from Hollywood's golden era. One with big stars, that has stood the test of time as highly repeatable entertainment. I would suggest one in color and CinemaScope and stereo, because we all like to show off what S8 can do. But please, no three hour epics! Many titles fill these requirements, westerns, dramas, musicals, you name it. But no comedies- comedy does not always work very well in different countries.

I think Science fiction or horror were always your best sellers at Derann and would be your best choice for a new release.

A good zombie movie or recent horror movie.

A Scream, Friday the 13th or Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street entry would be great.

What about Bruce Lee Kung Fu movies they have very little language and are universal.

Cant stand Disneys or musicals tehy are for old folks and kindergarden

Action horror or sci fi movies are the best choices.

Any idea what you might release Adrian and when.

Have to say Paul is absolutely right... let's steer clear of the modern CGI stuff this time around and stick with something that actually originated on film. [Smile]

Actually... and this just now hit me... there is this very unusual but wonderful, WONDERFUL movie - not many people will have heard of it - it's called Baraka and was made by Ron Fricke who also was responsible for the Qatsi "trilogy" (Kooyanisqatsi, etc). Here's the website: http://www.spiritofbaraka.com/baraka.aspx - now if you folks at Derann can get in touch with Mr. Fricke and arrange for a negative to be obtained, that would be absolutely fantastic. [Smile] I'm telling you... this is one movie I would have no qualms paying $$$ for, as long as it's a scope/stereo print of course.

Chances are slim, I know... but asking has never hurt before, right?

Posted by Chip Gelmini (Member # 44) on June 03, 2006, 07:30 PM:

I agree with everyone, but I must agree with Jan on Baraka. By the way Jan.....who told you about this movie?

Baraka was, as the website tells us, one of the last movies filmed in the 70MM TODDAO format. However it should be noted that, the super 8 copy would come from a 35mm print for mastering.

The problem I heard was, only the 70mm prints were stunning. The 35mm prints of Baraka had problems, as noted in the behind the scenes documentary found on the (second edition) DVD of this movie (The first edition was only the feature with no supplements). The 35mm footage should have appeared grainy, and bouncy, and with poor contrast.

As for other films, I would love to see the Disney animated features of years past, starting with Little Mermaid, re-released to include widescreen 1:85 letter box ratio. Derann has done this with Fantasia 2000 during it's only so far release, so they could do it again.

In adddition, we need to have more movies in stereo sound, period. Derann boasts to be the only company with a high speed stereo recorder for super 8. And there's lots of us who don't have 708EL or 1200GS machines combined with a Pedro box; and/or the knowledge to rerecord our prints privately. And to be honest, some of the used films I have baught that were redubbed before I got them, are not the best redubbing quality.

Posted by Jan Bister (Member # 332) on June 03, 2006, 07:53 PM:

Hmm. Now I assume you're talking about 35mm positive prints, i.e. projectable film - not a 35mm negative made from the Todd-AO 65mm negative. (Or 70mm. Whichever. That's beside the point, though . [Smile] )
So maybe a 35mm negative does exist that itself is in perfectly good shape, and which is suitable for making a super-8 scope print. BTW, I discovered the movie through Netflix and rented it... and was absolutely blown away. [Smile]

I think that a full length print of Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" would be a real treat and would appeal to most collectors. It's a science fiction and fantasy film, with a great monster, has an all star cast, it's great family entertainment with glorious colour and sound that would show just what Super 8 is capable of and is a top quality product in the Derann tradition.
Best wishes,
Paul.

Hello Adrian & thank you for this opportunity to suggest some titles for possible Super 8 release by Derann. A top quality full length feature film would be my preference - I am delighted with my print of M & C and hopefuly it's success has encouraged you to consider more new Super 8 feature releases in future.

My list of desirable films is:
1. Wallace & Gromit Curse Of The Wererabbit feature
2. Wallace & Gromit The Wrong Trousers
3. The Girl Can't Help It full feature (Cinemascope - I'm amazed that this wonderfull 1950's Rock N Roll musical has never been released before, even as a digest - I've seen semi-faded flat 16mm prints sell for £300+)
4. Gladiator full feature
5. Nightmare Before Christmas full feature
6. Hells Bells Ub Iwerks / Disney early Silly Symphony
7. Three Little Bops 1950's Warner Bros. cartoon

Of course we will all have different tastes and preferred film genres but as this is a specialist hobby with a following in limited numbers I guess it is realistic to expect a more up to date and popular / repeatable title, or a never before issued classic, to sell better than a non-mainstream film.
Good luck and I look forward to the new releases hopefully in the near future.

Jan, "Aladdin" is already on 8mm, and is one of the best 8mm prints that came out of the Disney/Derann deal, so look for it on the 2nd hand lists. I've been looking at the lists of films being offered by forum members, and although some of them are classics, I'm afraid that most will never see the projection light of day, simply because: A) There is no way some of the titles mentioned would ever get the money laid out on a negative and soundtrack back. B) No 35mm master is likely to be found to make the said negative and soundtrack.

As to titles like "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" I had a few years back a lovely IB Tech 16mm edited version, professionally edited by Disney, and I offered this to Derek to release, and he told me he had the chance to release it F/L in Scope, but at the time no one was interested, all the collector wanted was the animated classics, and now it was too late, and wouldn't sell!

I know we all have our own wish list for films we would like to see made available on 8mm, but as ALL NEW 8mm releases have to come of a 35mm master, you must think about that for a moment, what is the likeyhood of a 35mm print of a 40 or 50 year old classic turning up on 35mm (and in pristine condition, no scratches, little splices etc.), compared with a modern day (say the last 10 years) film, even these are supposed to be destroyed after there "shelf" life. Perhaps some of the short subjects mentioned are a possibility, as I've found over the years that more care and attention is taken to features on 35mm than short subjects, but we must all get real here, and don't expect the impossible from Derann, as it may just not be possible.

Adrian,

I've allways liked the 400 TO 600FT Extracts as they are affordable. Classic Home Cinema has done two of the opening sequences from the Bond movies 'The Living Daylights' & 'Goldeneye' which I have and I thought made ideal short extracts for S8. How about reel 1 from Master& Commander, or the Death Star distruction from Star Wars as extracts, more of the Bond opening sequences as they are a self contained story on there own. The sinking from Titanic. I understand that a lot of collectors can ask for a full length feature print only to shy away when it's released (such as Independance Day) so how about putting forward a list of possible feature releases with a 25% non refundable deposit before you commit to print?

The Three Little Bops is an excellent one reel cartoon.
It's a jazzed up version of the three little pigs,
with a jazzy soundtrack which is done
in a style that only Warner Brothers could
only imagine.

This is a print that we have been searching for years to find.

If this were available from Derann in 16mm as well,
My friend and myself would purchase it in 16mm.
Just as I had purchased that beautiful print of
Mickey Mouse in the Brave Little Tailor.

Also, I do know that the University of Southern California Television
and Movie Archives (UCLA) has a pristine print of
the Fleischer cartoon: Christmas Comes One Time a Year.

Unlike what has circulated for years, their title is complete with all of the original opening and closing titles with rich full color.
This is a must cartoon for any collector, and a great additon to a holiday
program.

Another great Christmas cartoon, is the MGM Classic: Alias St. Nick.

I think that Tim Allen's The Santa Clause is another wonderful
Christmas addition. It's off beat, but very endearing.

Barry:

Shame about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
I would have loved that on any format.

Barry as you mentioned: the chances of obtaining
a release that is 50 years old and is in pristine condition is becoming
very difficult. If we do not strike now when the iron is hot,
we may never see the likes of film anytime too soon.
From how I see it, 16mm is practically dead.

Why was Dumbo never released?
That film is charming, perfect characterizations, has great color - especially the dream sequence after Dumbo becomes inebriated. and how about that tender song Baby Mine?
Best of all, it all concludes with a rousing finale- Yes I've seen a Elephant Fly.

Produce a new print of Warners classic cartoon The Three Little Bops on non-fade stock and I'll take one.

My other Derann Warner cartoons are great, but my classic 16mm and Techno Super 8 prints are fading. To think I sold a Fuji 16mm Duck Dodgers for an Eastman print that at the time was in much better condition!!! Wish I still had the Fuji print!

Spider-Man is indeed a very good print. The title didn't sell though so as much as I'd like a Super 8 copy of Spider-Man 2 there is no market for it. Shame as the 35mm master material would be relatively easy to find - and it's in 'Scope unlike the first film... and it looks better on film than it does on HDTV.

Reel 1 from Master and Commander offered independently is a good idea.

Wallace + Gromit is a nice movie, but isn't one Nick-Park-Feature not enough for the super-8-market? "Chicken Run" as full feature is still available on super-8 ...

So here are my favorites:
Blade Runner
War of the Worlds (2004)
Starship Troopers
One of the new Star-Wars Episodes...

Rik,

don´t know about the markets outside but here
marketing film and UFA asked the buyer of their films.

They asked for the favourite genres. How many reels a super 8 release should have. The prices. The profession and age. And if a black/white television is still used at home.
In 77/78 UFA asked for interesting about one reelers. Later they offered dubbed KEN one-parters.
The UFA postcards from 1980 asked for titles which the collector would buy immediately.

(left: marketing-film postcard from 1974, front UFA postcard from 1977/78)

Back to the topic.

I would prefer selected scene editions
from horror, science fiction. [Big Grin]
for example
- The Hills Have Eyes
- Jurrasic Park III
- Wrong Turn
and
no more Matrix please. [Roll Eyes]

John,

Yes my print was in English, but I actually bought it via Derann, who I believe at the time did some swapping of features with the German printer, but I believe CHC can still get it, but it may have to be ordered special, but as mine came with an English track, I would imagine it can be ordered that way!

A 'Scope extract from the Albert Finney version of 'Scrooge' was put out by Derann a few years ago. One of the musical numbers I believe.

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on June 08, 2006, 04:32 AM:

I'd welcome more extracts - I particularly liked the first one from 'Gladiator' - but the occasional feature too.

As a collector of Hammer films, there are some classics I'd love to see on Super 8, including 'The Devil Rides Out' full length (longest version was 4 x 400') and Hammer's 'The Phantom of the Opera' (only released in b/w). I'd also welcome 'Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed' or 'Taste the blood of Dracula' in their uncut UK versions.

For something different, how about 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. I once mentioned it years ago at a Derann Open Day when Derek was inviting suggestions. He said that he had assumed that it was not the sort of film that collectors would go for, but it has such a cult following that I think it could sell well. Some Rocky fans would probably buy a projector in order to screen it! At the Open Day, two or three others also expressed interest and I think Derek said he would mention it to 20th Century Fox, but I don't know if he ever did.

I'm willing to stake my reputation (not that I'm claiming to have one) and cash (at least for one print) that Derann would sell more than 20 copies of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. Anyone else willing to join me? After all, 'Grease' was released due to public demand, and at least some of the people that bought it would probably go for 'Rocky', and others besides. I recall the 400' version going for quite high amounts on eBay. Also, Fox might have a perfect master available, in view of the DVD release.

Jan - personally, I think it scores well on repeatability, just ask the US fans who go and see it every weekend! We could all be invigorated by viewing classic songs like 'Sweet Transvestite' now and again, not to mention doing the 'Time Warp' in our home cinemas! And imagine the fun of inviting round suitably dressed people to see it!

If anything, I would prefer a gorgeous
Full-length print of 1976
ROCKY .
Stallone, Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire,
Burt Young, Bill Conte, and director
John G. Avildsen, all were garnered with
Oscar Nominations. The film won for Editing
Director, and Best Picture against
Taxi Driver and Network.

Or how about a gorgeous full-length print
Scope or adapted scope print of
The Godfather ?
This film is tops in every form.

Many collectors do not have it,
and we watch it every time when it airs
on cable TV.

By now many of the Godfather 1 & 2 prints
all have color fade, which were released by
Marketing.

These are classics to see again and again.

There are many Elvis fans, how about releasing
cut down prints in scope of Blue Hawaii ?
Every Song in that picture is a classic!
With some nice editing, that would be a true
crowd pleaser again and again.
Hawaiian Wedding Song,
Blue Hawaii,
Can't Help Falling in Love
as well as some of the minor songs
all have a fun beat and twist to each one.
If you check it out, you can see how they
seamlessly meshed the songs into the plot
of this beautiful feature.

No offense taken Adrian, but
I don't wish to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show,
or to screen a print with a rowdy audience
that believes that it would be OK, to toss scores of Cards,
and rice, and mop up water from
the floor after the crowd decides to have an
interactive moment with the screen. [Eek!]

This is the element, which made this picture
a cult favorite, and my wife would not appreciate
picking up after each screening for too long either.

The song:Let's do the time warp again, was the only
part I found amusing.

Wasn't 'Rocky Horror' available as a digest many years ago?

Respectfully to the Wallace and Grommit fans,
I am not interested in this title, although it
received the most nods on this post.

But if fishnet stockings and lipstick sells,
well then go for it. [Frown]

Michael

Michael,

I'm completely with you as far as Rocky goes - excuse me, I mean of course Rocky Horror Picture Show. [Big Grin] Yeah, it may be a cult movie and "very" repeatable indeed, but only so with a, shall I say, hardcore audience that is its very own dedicated fan club in a way that has little to do anymore with our own enjoyment of film for what it is. Let's just not go there. [Roll Eyes] And yes, a 400' digest of it does exist... not sure who released it, though.

What kind of frustrates me about this thread ... is that I know there's number of titles that absolutely MUST come out on super-8 that I always think of... except I just can't come up with their names right here, right now. Bugger, that human memory thing. [Big Grin]

Michael, Rocky was released full length years ago. Secondhand copies still come up for around £100 so keep your eyes open.

I don't really have any preference for a future Super 8 feature release. It appears Wallace and Grommit would sell so if a master can be sourced that seems like the best bet currently. If not, then I would recommend any feature release to be 'Scope.

In the meantime I'd still like further extracts from 'Gladiator'. I rather fancied having sequential extracts that would effectively form a cut-down of the feature when completed. For example, we already have the complete opening, perhaps a future extract could be from when Russell Crowe finds the emperor slain to when he finds his own family slain (not sure how long this would be as I haven't checked). Next could be when he is picked up and taken into Gladiatorial school. We already have the 'Battle of Carthage'. Then perhaps just the final arena fight against Joaquin Phoenix with the possible addition of the penultimate arena fight if sales of all other extracts are buoyant. There you go, a cut-down feature release of Gladiator without cuts during each sequence meaning minimal damage to the 35mm print.

Enough of my ramblings.

Your idea for a Gladiator cut down sounds good, I'd buy that! I'd also buy Rocky Horror Picture Show , one of the most repeatable films and something I'd love to own on super 8.

What do you think about The Brides of Dracula with David Peel and Peter Cushing, I think this is also a good title.
Another great Hammerfilm I like to have is Dracula A.D. 1972.

Hi All

Thanks for the link to Classic. I checked him out and whilst I would love to add Spiderman to my collection the price he is charging is a little too rich for me and he hasn’t exactly inspired me with his pillow talk so I will stick with Derann and see what they plan to release.

Out of curiousity I notice a lot of German collectors on this forum. Classic seem to be importing all his titles from Germany so do any of the German collectors know what the source is or can send me an personal email. I think it would be quite useful particularly for US collectors if we could buy from the 8mm source like Derann rather than pay a commission/finders fee.

It would be quite useful for the German dealer to have an outlet here and with this thread maybe we can persuade them to release some 8mm features like the ones suggested.

Ralf & Uwe - I think 'Brides OF Dracula' would be an excellent Hammer release; I'm sure many would consider it the best Hammer film to have not been released in any form on 8. I probably overlooked it as I have a decent 16mm print. 'The Devil Rides Out' came to mind because some of the 4 x 400' prints are very good, and if Derann still had the edits from the master and could restore it to full length, that would make a very desirable release.

Michael - You might be joking about what a 'Rocky Horror' audience would do, but when I screened my (sadly faded) 16mm print of this in my home, there was no bad behaviour and I was the only person with a water pistol!
Jan - It's true that it's a cult audience, but I'd say it's a cult on a scale like no other, that goes far beyond a clique. The stage show still tours almost constantly, at least in the UK. We now have 3 'pre-orders' here for RHPS so far, so maybe it's only second to Wallace and Grommit.

Put me down for any extra extracts from Gladiator, cracking film and as we have seen, real top quality super 8 prints.
Like the Matrix releases but would have prefured the fist Matrix film. As for Hammer Horror they are the right sort of length 4 x 400ft for S8. I have a very dupy looking print of 'Countess Dracula' which has been popular wth my audience, but who could resist Ingrid Pit. Wallice & Gromit in the Curse of the Were Rabit seems to be one of the more practical propositions, but was it a scope release? Not being scope must have limited the sales of Spiderman which was another cracking film.

Yes all those Hammer movies I would be interested in and they are quite short running times so they should be quite reasonable. I have a number of the Hammer Derann released and it would be great to have them

Anyway, I hereby propose that we change the title of this topic to something like...

What, other than W&G, would you like to see released by Derann?

[Razz]

Posted by Kevin Faulkner (Member # 6) on June 10, 2006, 03:57 PM:

I think the views here have probably given Derann quite a good idea of peoples wants. Yes W&G is probably right at the top along with Rocky Horror.

I suppose it all comes down to what Deal can be done and what origination is available etc etc.

At least Adrian can see how positive collectors are still and the sort of titles people want to collect.

Over to you Adrian and the other guys at Derann.

Kev.

Hi Jan

There seems to be enough interest in releasing a Hammer amongst collectors.

But just so I wont mention Hammer what about all those great American Internatinal Horrors

Tomb Of Ligeia
Witchfinder General
Pit & The Pendulum
Tales of Terror ideal as each story is half a hour and self contained.

Maybe Adrain and his team could release two features to make everyone happy

Chester,

afraid I have to profess ignorance as to those American horror titles you've listed - perhaps that's because I'm a German native and have only lived in the States for a decade... many a classic film of American origin around that I have not yet seen. [Eek!]

That said, I'm fairly certain that full-length super-8 prints of Witchfinder General and Pit and the Pendulum already exist. Could swear I'd seen them on eBay before.

So, Adrian, how are you getting on with obtaining the negative for Wallace & Gromit [Wink]

Posted by Brian Hendel (Member # 61) on June 10, 2006, 08:02 PM:

Just a correction on those horror releases...

WITCHFINDER GENERAL was only released heavily edited by Walton on 4 X400' so a full length print would be fantastic.

PIT AND THE PENDULUM with Vincent Price was never relased on super 8 to my knowledge. The PIT AND PENDULUM you are seeing is actually a Chris Lee German film called THE BLOOD DEMON which was released by Mountain Films. It's actually quite good though.

A vincent Price AIP film would be AMAZING indeed. i was told When MASQUE of the RED DEATH was released on super 8, that Deraan did have a negative for another V.P. Hey, if we're gonna go Italian, how about a Bruno Bozzetto feature? That man is a genius when it comes to cartoon animation... and he made a wonderful feature film called Vip, mio fratello superuomo (VIP - My superman brother). Gawd, if I could have that on super-8... I'd be in heaven...!

Hi everyone.

Just to comment about the Hammer horrors.

'Scars of Dracula', still rates as our most successful 8mm release EVER.
It was one of Dads favourite Hammer films.

Thanks for the massive response. I have started with some enquiries, but if anybody knows of anyone with a good collection of 35mm films ..... please let me know.

Kind regards

Chester,

two episodes from "Tales of Terror" were already released in the 1980's - I think by Perry's Movies: "The Black Cat" and "Morella".

Jan,

I have seen at least two 16mm prints of "Vip, mio fratello superuomo" (in German language of course) on eBay Germany over the years. As your Eiki seems to be hungry for more film, and you speak German, this should be an option for you - shouldn't it?

Eberhard, wow, I didn't know 16mm prints of VIP existed. Yeah, the German dub is how I know the film back from when I caught it on TV (and taped it). Sure, if I come across it on eBay.de then I might not mind buying it... although to be honest I still prefer collecting films in English, otherwise I'm the only one who can enjoy them! Hi Chester,
I have both "Morella" and The Black Cat" in my collection. They were released by a Dutch Super 8 distributor with English sound and Dutch subtitles. They were both originally sold as separate 2x400ft versions. I have never seen the third sequence from "Tales of Terror" (Valdemar)sold anywhere and to my knowledge these were the only versions ever released on Super 8. They are pan and scan prints and the color is still very good. The subtitles are not so intrusive and Vincent Price's introductory narratives to both tales are intact. They do show up from time to time and are well worth getting if, like me you are a Vincent Price fan.
Best wishes,
Paul.

If Derann is interested in a short of "Baraka" I have just remembered I do have a copy of the 35mm flat trailer. Adrian please let me know.

Lupo the Butcher is on the internet somewhere. Try googling it. Sorry if that link was not right or you could not get in. It was made by Danny Anntonucci who also worked with Marv Newland, who brought us Bambi Meets Godzilla. i.e. National Film Board of Canada. Lupo was showcased in circuit through the Mike and Spike Sick and Twisted animated festival.

FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET (Quanttro mosche di velluto grigio)
THE CAT O NINE TAILS (Il gatto a nove code)

John,

Correct me here, but I believe that
Hercules was a part of that
very nice Disney deal, and by
1999-2000, the Disney 8mm features
ended at Derann

I wish that Disney's The Santa Clause
would have also been offered during
that time period.

I wonder how Derann polls
the collectors that do not
post thier interest on this forum?

I also collect 16mm to supplement
the wonderful assortment available in 8mm.

With the recent high quality of releases in Super 8,
it is amazing that the labs are capable to
achieve startling quality out of such a small
frame of film. [Smile]

Sorry guys, no "Hercules".

The lastest Disney's were "A Bug's Life" in 'scope and then "Fantasia 2000" which I personally think is underated and apparently suprised Derann with very good sales when it was released.

ONLY if it's the UNCUT version, though. The UN-edited version has a scene of Peter Cushing using his teeth to pull stitches when sewing up the monster and also footage of what the creature looked like after the inmates maul it. The DVD release from Paramount boasts an 'R' reating, but be warned - it's the sanitized tv version that they utilized. The VHS is also the edited version. The UNCUT version was released on Laserdisc years ago, but nobody uses these anymore.

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on June 23, 2006, 08:31 PM:

FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL would be a great idea, particularly if Derann had access to the master used for the 16mm print, which they were responsible for. I'd love to know where that print is, and I recall hearing from a reliable source that there was only one made. I actually saw it at a Hammer convention in the early 1980s and I'm sure it was the uncut British version. I expect a uncut Super 8 version would attract extra interest and sell more as a result.

Saving Private Ryan : D-Day Scene is a good choice.

I just saw Cars, and it was splendid.
If our UK cousins request: Wallace and Grommit,
then I'm up for Cars .

The story and paint finish on this CGI
cartoon, is beyond belief.

The 'Hammer' stuff for the Halloween buffs.

I'm also up for any film that has a holiday
flare to be exhibited around the end of the year.
The Santa Clause,
otherwise
The Godfather or
Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

We caught Pirates of the Caribbean Pt.2,
and although the end credits were long
there was a cute brief scene after all of the
credits which I believed was worth while.

I hope that Adrian is taking notes
because this film is a winner, either
as extracts or the complete feature.

It proves also, that Disney's 20,000 Leagues
would have been a very good release as
a classic full length scope feature too.

Could you please gives some consideration to releasing the 4 Miss Marple films on super 8, or at least a condensed version of them.

I think they may have been black & white films and I would presume that it would be cheaper to produce a b/w film than a color film?

These are classic films (especially for Rutherford's performances) and it would be great in a collection.

In a way the Polar Express is the best of the CGI features. Not because it is technically better than all the rest (which it isn't), but simply because there is a sense of wonder about it I've rarely seen anywhere else. It does what animation and especially CGI is best for: taking something from fantasy and putting it up on the screen startlingly close to reality.

I'm not sure I'd go for the feature, but how about a trailer?

In the tradition of the single and two song 'Scope 200' extracts from "Grease", "South Pacific", "Sound of Music" and the rest. (They always go over big when I show them!)

A 200' 'Scope extract from "My Fair Lady" featuring Alfie Doolittle. Maybe "With a little bit of luck" and/or "I'm gettin' married in the morning"

Could deal with Eliza singing "Loverly" too!

..or Henry Higgins belting out "-but let a woman in your life!"

(the line about a "Wagnerian Mother-in-Law" has always resonated with me for some reason...)

Hmmm..This one could be a 400 footer!

Hi All

I believe the best sellers for Derann were always horror and science fiction movies.

Their best seller of all time was Hammer Scars of Dracula.

Those kind of movies are popular with collectors. Some of the titles coming up now would be lucky to get past five let alone double digits sales which would make it a loser for Derann.

Is it possible for a list of the most popular titles to be drawn up and presented to Derann as this thread now looks like one almighty mess which is impossible to analyze.

Chester

Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on July 30, 2006, 02:59 PM:

Fabrizio,

Derann tried to bring out "Geri's Game" a few years back. Unfortunately while they were preparing the release the negative they had was destroyed and the project was abandoned. (I asked them about it and this is what they replied.)

Sad!, it really would have been a great little short!

How about "Tin Toy"?

Just thought of another film that I believe would be popular; The Party with Peter Sellers.

Just a 400ft with the best few scenes is all that would be required for my order: The Birdie Num Num scene, Howdy Pardner scene and maybe the shoe in the indoor stream!

Not too many Peter Sellers on Super 8 considering his output.

Hello Fabrizio and Steve,

it was right, that the negative from Pixars "Geri's Game" has damaged. But before this happens Derann made a few prints of this short. I have one in my archive. But this is not for a quality fanatic, there a many lines and some scratches on it. But the sharpness and colours are very good. A good friend of me has also a copy and he said the quality is the same.

Sometimes there are a print in the second hand lists, so look out if you are interested.

Many Greetings

Both Geri's Game, and The Party
sound intriguing,
Andreas, I'm with you

That would be a good extract
and many more scenes would work
equally as well.
With a skilled hand
that feature can be
expertly trimmed
to a shorter running time.

I would like to see a cult trailer reel put together providing master material could be found.

Quadrophenia
A Clockwork Orange
Texas Chainsaw Massacre

This would be something of a different themed trailer reel maybe with a few accompanying adverts from the period?

Hi Lee I would love the chance to get a trailer of a clockwork orange too, its on the DVD of course.
I often just put the dvd on for the opening first few minutes.
I always found it funny that people thought that film could lead you on to vilolence etc as always put me off it completely.
Much as I like the film the whole thing has a sort of twisted uncomfortableness to it.

I'm not a particular fan of musicals, but to show off super 8 to its best I'd love to see an extract from Moulin Rouge or Chicago, or even an extract from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. Now that would be cool...

That's exactly what Stanley Kubrik was going for on "Clockwork" and apparantly, he suceeded with you.

Sadly, I always have the odd choice of what I would like to see on Super 8 as a feature, but my main pick, (still is, that is, besides "Curse of Were-rabbit") is "Dark City", talk about a film that would look absolutely stunning on Super 8mm!

FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX ( the first version, starring James Steward,;etc...)

AIRPORT!
AIRPORT!
AIRPORT!
AIRPORT!

Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase.....

Hi there!.
Didn't notice this thread a year ago...
Personally my list would be rather vast and sometimes consistent with other memebers' (Nuovo cinema Paradiso is a good example). But I prefer to stick to Paul Adsett's opinion: we do need a title that should be full-length, stereo & scope and with live action. Maybe not too old. When I say "we need" I mean this is the best way to show (off) what S/8 is capable of: CGI animated films are perfect for modern LCD and plasma displays, in fact I seldom see them on stores showing a film with live actors. Reproduction of all the colours and nuances present in real life is a task modern digital equipment hasn't accomplished yet.

I'd love a print of A Few Good Men (great photography -Scope, great drama, great performances by both Nicholson and Cruise), Blade Runner (I love P.K. Dick's world), M. Antonioni's Blow Up (very 'metalinguistic' and indeed timeless), Coppola's The Conversation and of course, Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odissey
Just my tuppence

Hi Mark H, did you know derran do the trailer to chicgao, its a great long version and also has the bonus of a matrix trailer on the end too. Both are cinema scope and looks great 4/3 as well. Both look and sound super.
I`ve never seen the film but the trailer is absolutely superb and I almost fancy Renne Zellweger when watching it too !!!!

I would love to see any scope film, however, the ones I've seen are cropped so much on top & bottom that it occasionally cuts heads off. I got the measuresments of the 35mm frame(red) & super 8mm frame(black). And this shows just about how much is missing from the top & bottom:

 -

I would love to see something like this, minus some space for the splices:

 -

There is one release Derann has that is similar to the above which I believe was produced flat and squeezed up using something in the industry called a Disney squeeze, that film is: Trail Mix-Up.

Actually I'd love to see the ending to PHANTOM MENACE. Starting when the doors opening up to reveal Darth Maul to the end. I think this is the best light saber fight of any of the STAR WARS films.

OTHER FEATURE CHOICES:

MATRIX
X-MEN 2
DINOSAUR

Larry,

Actually, the "cinevision" prints of the late 70's early 80's were done in this way, with black borders on the left and right sides.

However, these were problematic as well, as splicing from the original editing of the film would show up. i noticed this a lot on "Rooster Cogburn and the lady" (John Wayne, K hepburn)
this was more so in the dark scenes, (the massacre at the indian reservation, near the beginning of the reel, you keep on getting these bright "flashes" at the very top at every cut from shot to shot). A nice scope release, to be sure, but it does show some of the problems with "cinevision".

I usually will just move the frame adjustment a little higher so i don't get "heads' being cut off.

The supply of new 16mm prints from David Shepards Blackhawk library has recently ceased due to the illness of the lab person.

Any chance of Derann printing some of these fantastic old shorts on Super 8 under licence? When I last ordered some last year there were still over 100 great early cinema titles featuring comedians and docos.

David,

Good comment.
We all wonder if the Blackhawk negs
will ever become available again?

When Shepard acquired the negs and
began printing around 15- 20 years
ago, he did print some titles in 8mm sound.
I recall Tit for Tat, Saps at Sea, Angora Love,
The Chases of Pimple Street, were some of the few
offerings. However there was not a tremendous
demand and then the printing was limited to 16mm.
If I am correct, he also had not created any new printing
materials in at least 10 years.

But one could only hope that whatever was old,
will become new again.

I've kind of wondered about Derann or CHC releasing some of the great classic silents: unless they decided to add a music track (like Blackhawk did), they wouldn't even need to stripe them.

How about some Chaplin or maybe something really ancient like Great Train Robbery?

Question: Has Derann ever sold silent films?

Posted by Barry Attwood (Member # 100) on November 05, 2007, 10:01 AM:

Derann I'm afraid would not go after the Blackhawk titles as they cannot get hold of any polyester B/W stock these days, and they will not print of old B/W negs onto colour stock, as this can produce a variety of different hues on the printed 8mm film (who remembers the white box specials that Derann used to do) from Blue to Yellow, this was OK in days of a lab like Rank Films, where they would happily take back, or credit for these reels, but the lab that does all Derann's work is a small business these days, so unless it's their fault, there is no comeback once printed. CHC does have use of acetate B/W 8mm stock, but as they would have to be printed in Germany, I doubt the owner of the Blackhawk library would be too pleased for the negs to go out of the country, come to think of it I doubt even Derann could persuade him to let them out of the U.S.

Posted by Graham Sinden (Member # 431) on November 05, 2007, 11:29 AM:

Another point to make is that old B/W titles would not attract the young collectors out there and its the young collectors who have the cash! This is exactly why Derann released 'End of Days' because Arnold is still very popular with under 40's. Also Derann may have been able to get a cheap deal because of previous titles from the same source and the negatives were readily available.

Many super 8 releases would be down to rights and the availability of negatives. Derann recently told me that the problem with any more Wallace And Grommit releases is the rights, and Derann like any other have to work to a budget.

I think its unlikely we will see another feature from Derann as they seem to be concentrating on extracts and trailers which are cheaper so they sell more. What Derann also have to think about is 'what sells' which is another reason why Arnie and Gladiator are both on super 8. They could produce more Laurel and Hardy shorts on super 8, but what is the point when you can buy them on 16mm for around £30 to £50.

CHC may release more features on super 8 because Phil may get a cheap deal with the german labs.

Something I'd love to see on super 8 would be "The Crimson Permanent Assurance". It's the 15 minutes "short feature", directed by Terry Gilliam, used as an opener for "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life". It's a lot of fun, action and singing.

(I'll post that message on the CHC topic as well).

2. The Mole People

3. Feature length WC Fields movies. I don't have any interest at all in the edited versions of his features. I'd especially go for "the Bank Dick," "Never Give a Sucker and Even Break," "man on the Flying Trapeze" and "It's a Gift." --Tom

Your right Jeroen, great animated flick.

It can be frustrating. I offered my first collection of 16MM animated cereal commercials to Derann for release. They replied politely and said that they were not interested.

True, they are 16MM, and a negative made freom 16MM source would not be as good as a neg from 35MM, but with commercials, you don't have too much of a choice. Red Fox released a two TV commercial releases and they were somewhat grainy, (as the negs were made from 16MM originals.

But I'm betting that they would have sold! They are all those classic characters that most of us grew up with, and mint condition ads at that! Also, at only six minutes, it would have made a rather cost efficient 200ft reel.

I'm working on a second collection of these classic animated ads and have had the good fortune to find completely unfaded prints of these late sixties cartopon commercials which, at that time were a full minute long, and not the later running time of 30 seconds.

Blimey, if I had the "lolly", I'd be contacting the German labs myself!

Okay, the problem getting "Anastasia" on Super 8 is that Don Bluth kind of jumped around from studio to studio when he released his animated features. Derann did release "Secret of Nihm" and Barry Atwood and his gang released (I hope I'm right about that Barry), "All Dogs Go To Heaven" (Love to find a print of that one Barry!)

, but Anastasia was released by Fox, so Derann, while they have had deals with Fox before (STAR WARS), would probably have to make another deal with Fox, and I bet that they don't have the financial clout to do so these days, sad to say.

Personally, if they could do another deal with Fox, "Titan AE" would probably be a better seller, but that is just my opinion.

Regarding A&C MEET F, I have never seen that offered in full-length on Super 8. I'm not doubting the statement that it was released, though. Is it still available? I'll even take an improved 20 minute cut-down. As I've mentioned many times before on this forum, U-8 did a terrible job with that. They should have used that editor's brain to put in the monster!

German prints of "A&C meet Frankenstein" were available for a time along with the original "Godzilla","Psycho", "Tarantula" and "Young Frankenstein". These were all printed on B&W stock. How about a 400 or 600 ft spool of all Star Wars trailers, beginning with Phantom Menace through Return of the Jedi?

I agree with you Chip. Trailer reels are always good. Ive been watching a James Bond trailer reel a lot although most of the trailers on it have faded it is still very good fun and very watchable. Thats it with trailer reels you can watch them again and again and never get bored. Your idea sounds excellent. Are the individual trailers still available new? The only sticking point Ive found with the James Bond trailers is that some are flat and others scope so you cant put them all on the same reel, the same might be true of Star Wars?

Graham S

Posted by Chip Gelmini (Member # 44) on February 23, 2009, 04:11 PM:

To make it sell good, it would have to be flat. Scope would be nice, but not everyone has that capability yet they'd want the trailers too. If done right maybe letter box them all, so the reel runs consistent. And have all 7 trailers be just for each of the 7 films....not have one trailer promoting three in the series, even though it could have been made very good as a production overall.

Posted by Graham Sinden (Member # 431) on February 23, 2009, 05:03 PM:

I agree. Make them all flat or letterboxed. One of the 007 trailers I was watching , Spy who Loved Me, is flat like the rest on the reel. Derann sell it new but it is in scope so cant really splice it onto reel. But never mind its still great.

Its a shame Derann (and classic) dont sell more trailer reels (3 on a 200ft reel), but prefer to sell the trailers individually.

Graham S [Smile]

Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on February 23, 2009, 05:08 PM:

There's more money selling them seperately, and who can blame them for that? Certainly not me. Actually, I don't like when they have two or more trailers on a reel. Usually, I will only want one of the three and I end up being snookered into three.

Bleaugh!

News flash. I am in talks about potentially releasing a reel of cereal ads on Super 8. That's all I can say. (that's all there is! But it is a start!)
