Can anyone comment if the footage in the 400' versions of any of the A&C titles is different or just added to the 200'ers?

The 400' version of "Abbott & Costello Meet The Keystone Kops" combines what looks like an an awful quality dupe of "Hollywood & Bust" with a slightly better looking "Have Badge Will Chase". U-8 didn't bother to include the original feature's titles either.

I have found short scenes in 200' A&C Meet Frankenstein and A&C Meet Dr. J and Mr. Hyde which are not contained in the 400' version. W.C.Fields' 400' "Never Give A Sucker An Even Break" does not include any of the 200' "Hurry Hurry," which is an excerpt from the same film! Therefore, splicing the two together would give the viewer a 25-minute film. Of course, MANY 200' Castle Films monster movies contain material not in Universal 8's 400' versions.

I recently discovered that Castle Films' "No bulls, please" contains about 20-30 seconds of dialogue not found in Universal 8's "Mexican Hayride." This may or may not be worth the time to edit.

I just finished editing Abbott & Costello in the Foreign Legion Castle 200' and Universal 8 400' versions. The 200' film contains over 5 minutes not in the 400' print, so total running time is over 22 minutes combined. This is worth the effort, since the classic desert mirage scene is only in the 200' version.

How could U-8 justify not including the mirage scene in the 400'er of "Foreign Legion"? It's the only true highlight in the entire film. I should probably skip the 400'er altogether then. I mean what would be the point? Oooooooo..... That makes me so mad!!! For years, I've been considering bidding on it whenever I'd see it up for auction. I'm glad now that I decided not to. Any other 400'ers I should avoid due to poor editing or poor quality?

The editing on Universal 8's 400 foot ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN was adequate (it was nice that they included the original animated title sequence), but the print was kind of muddy.

It's funny that you like "Meet Frankenstein". I always felt that U-8 did a horrible job. It starts at the locker room when they could have chosen so many better places to begin like the wax museum and include the floating candle bit and then segued to the castle melee. I'm glad they included the Walter Lantz animated opening credits, but for me, this was the only + to the entire digest. The print was obviously struck from what looked like a used 16mm library print that they didn't even bother to clean before duping it. How I wish Derann would re-issue a better digest. I'll stick with the 200'er. Better print and, albeit brief, it certainly was done with care.

I'm wondering if U8's 16mm prints of any given title (A & C MEET FRANKENSTEIN, for example) look better than their Super 8s of the same title? Would anyone here know?

Also, Brad, I agree that they started the MEET FRANKENSTEIN digest at a very peculiar point. Like you, I can think of quite a few better starting points for it. When U8 took over, did they fire all the Castle editors?
