Hello
Just recently bought a Eumig s905 and is due to arrive soon. Is this projector any good? I know it is a coaxial mechanism which I was a little worried about as I feel it over complicates the film path unnecessarily. But does anyone else have one of these projectors and are they happy with it? Have they had many problems? Reason for buying was to play all the eBay acquired sound super-8 I have and future films I plan to buy.
In addition to this can anyone recommend a good quality standard 8 or dual projector that is capable of playing sound on standard 8?
Kind rgds,
John.

I hope I don't burst your bubble, but those machines are horrible. Biggest issue is that there are no sprockets and the film is claw-driven. Most films will be very noisy as it makes its way through the projector. My only advice is to lubricate your films thoroughly to avoid damage and to quiet things down. Hope you didn't pay too much for it.

Hi Tony,
Used to live in your neck of the woods in a place called Trumbull.

Well fairly standard price not too steep and not real cheap Ģ95. Would you recommend a better alternative?
ELMO ST-600? SANKYO? CINEREX?

Dont want to wreck all my super-8

Kind rgds,
John.

Only Super 8 sound that I can recommend unequivocally is an Elmo. I have an ST1200-HD, but I believe some of the smaller capacity machines are OK as well. I have heard that the st-180E has a more updated design than the 600 series. The Rolls Royce is the GS 1200 -- but be prepared to pay up to $1,000 USD for a machine with no problems.

I have heard that Sankyos are very nice as well -- I have always wanted to try one myself. If I did I would go with at least the 600 version with the 100 watt lamp. Some of their models have less than 100 watt and in my opinion that is too dim.

The eumig 824d is a good dual 8 machine. The best reg 8 sound machine is a rare bird made by a company called calvin in the earlt 60s.It used the same design as the movie mite 16mm projector and it<s solid like a rock.I've only ever seen one on ebay.Good luck!

Can anyone tell me how to remove the lens from an S905???? [Confused]
Ive had the machine apart and cleaned it all out,
Ive had several Eumigs and never had any problem removing the lens's. Clearly its something simple that im missing,(apart from me brain [Big Grin] )

Tom,
I'm not sure if the 934 has the same lens assembly, but try this from the 934 book...

Turn the focussing knob fully anticlockwise-
Push the lend inwards-
Continue turning the focussing knob anticlockwise-
Remove the lens.

Before replacing the lens check that the engagement key of the lens faces you and that the focussing knob is engaged. Now push the lens fully into the mount and turn the focussing knob clockwise.

Let us know the result.
Martin

John,
I have an S934 to sell, which DOES have sprockets and a standard reel layout. But I'm not in Bedfordshire... Devon

Thanks Martin, all done, it works the same way,

Have to say this is a weird machine, very surprised to see Eumig come up with something with only one sprocket, i have aquired this item which had had very little use. Its condition is very good but unfortunatly a small part of the black case (top part next top the handle) has some mould which when cleaned off has left some unsightly marks. Ive cleaned it, wiped it polished it but it keeps coming back.
Not a machine i would use with any of my prized collection to be honest as i also do not like projectors that use claw power to pull the film through even worse i think on this co-axel projector because it has to be pulled all the way forward then sharp down.

Yes, Tom, not all the 900 series are like it, some have a top sprocket, a sound sprocket and normal spool arrangement(see my post above). My S926 (the Stereo one with the coaxial reels) performs beautifully, though, despite those "defects".Another enthusiast modified his to improve the film entry path; perhaps your 905 would benefit from a similar mod? I've 3 different Eumigs (and one I'm modifying for transfer use), as well as an Elmo ST600... and I love them all, although my S934 will have to go because I need both the room and the money! I will not part with my S824 or my Elmo; the 824 was purchased as a backup for my Specto Royale (bought to show the films of our wedding and honeymoon 50 years ago next month) and the Elmo, purchased when I changed to Super 8. The Specto also continues to run like a dream after all these years. Awaiting examination and any restoration needed is an iconic Bell and Howell Gaumont 601, the very first 16mm model I ever used as school projectionist.... 60 years ago. What a hobby! Is there a better one?

Tom, Not sure what "mods" you refer to, but if I can help I will.

On some projectors there are both small black-rubber toothbelts in rather soft condition and often one belt is alredy missing.
If you remove front cover, you can see them between rear sprocket wheel and rubber coated disk.
And change voltage to 240V~ if not already done.
Take care not to break off front foot. Screw it always full way in before transportion. Plastic thread breaks like glass after 20 years have past.
In addition take extrem care when removing black film path (plastic guide) underneath projection bulb and rear spocket wheel. Itīs held in place by 2 plastis hooks, only. If one hook breaks off you have lost the game.

Hi Josef & others on this Eumig 905 thread....

There are a few remarks I would like to make about these.

A) There is only one toothed drive belt used on the 900 series Eumigs.

The second pulley is only used if changing from 50hz to 60hz a/c. If you choose the wrong pulley the sound will be weird. If you swap to the correct pulley your sound will be normal again.

B) the 2 fingered claw actually pushes the film down through the gate rather than pulling it down. It is situated high up in the gate, well above the aperture. Thats where it can get a good grab at the film when you push the leader in.

Initially only 1 finger will hook into the film but thats enough to then move the film down a frame. On its next bite, both claw fingers enter the sprocket holes and the film is repeatedly thrust downwards frame by frame towards the aperture waiting below.

A lot of negative comment is posted about these co axial models. I don't think there is anything wrong with them & problems should only occur when service is not done properly.

Upon further reflection I added this note later,....

I believe these 900 series Eumigs are among the very best projectors & I reckon they are a better made machine than the much vaunted but tempermental Elmos.

Its a bit like comparing a Ferrari with a Mercedes Benz. Which one will still be running well after many days of hard racing?
I would say the Benz would likely win as it wouldn't break down.

Some here may dissagree, but for functionality, reliability & all round performance I think the Eumig 900 series deserves to be crowned the King of Super 8 Sound Movie Projectors.

Arguements for & against, welcome.

Just wanted to say that I agree with a lot Frank has said about Eumig. They are a superbly engineered projector and last a long time. I have seen the Elmos and they are also very good but I think for quality and reliability Eumigs stand out. The only other non-european machine I like is the Sankyo, yet they dont seem to get much of a mention compared to the other Japanese brands.
