I just watched the 4x400' Derann copy of this title. The picture is soft and there's a high-pitched tone on the soundtrack. Are other prints like this or am I just really lucky?

It is one of THE greatest films of all time!, I can tell you that. Don't know about the print quality, though.

You've got a duff print I'm afraid Doug. My print is pin sharp and the soundtrack is perfect.

Paul.

I have the 400' version. It doesn't have the faults you mention and the quality is not bad for a late 70s Derann release.

Thanks for your replies. I can't describe the honor I feel in having the one substandard print out there!

Doug - The prints of COUNTESS DRACULA (and I have had many over the years, since it's one of my favorites) vary greatly in quality. However, there have never been sound issues that I am aware of. Many are soft and have faded color. But the strangest quirk of this title is a bizarre subtle light source coming from the left side of the frame on the top and bottom. Almost like someone messed up the negative by exposing it somehow. Almost all of the prints I have had have had this... although the one I have now only has it on one or two reels. I remember reading a review from the 70's in Little Shoppe of Horrors magazine that Derann had such a hard time getting the color right on this title that the digest was switched to black and white only... and perhaps the later feature prints, too. The color on mine now is very good for a 70's Derann print, however, so it's worth looking for another one.

Brian,

Thanks. Since misery loves company, it's nice to know there are other soft prints out there. The high pitch tone is vey subtle, and it actually starts right before first picture. My print also has the light flare you mentioned. The one good thing about this print....the color is very nice!

We have a print of this title also and indeed a sound remix was in order. The DVD provided a very good Mono track on the main stripe although nothing obviously can be done about the picture quality which is only fair. But worth having if you're a fan of the genre as we are.
