I would be interested to know what "rare" titles fellow collectors have in their collection? These titles are, of course, "rare" in the owners opinion.

I'll start the with my "rarities" (in my opinion).

BRANNIGAN - Feature
F/X - MURDER BY ILLUSION - Feature
ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD - Red Fox feature
BATTLE HELL (aka - THE YANGZTEE INCIDENT) - Feature
OCCURANCE AT OWL CREEK - TWILIGHT ZONE - 600ft.

Keith, I too have a print of "Occurence at Owl's Creek".

There's one title I have in the collection that I never saw again anywhere, it's the Spam/Hungarian phrase book episode from Monty Python Flying Circus. Any other member own this one?

I have a bunch of titles which are considered rare here as they were only sold in Germany (a lot of French comedies which I have redubbed...) but some other german titles are pretty common to the collectors world (Das Boot, Star Crash, Zombie, The Kids are Alright, Phantasm, Anthropophagous, Something Waits in the Dark, Bullet Train 109...)

The bulk of my collection is vintage horror and sci fi films and two of my Super 8 titles I have never seen for sale on any lists in years. They are "Horror Express" 4X600ft reels colour and sound in the original crystal boxes and "The Night Caller" 4X400ft black and white sound from Walton Films also in its original boxes. This film from 1965 can be found on 1X400ft reel and as a feature in Standard 8 but it seems almost non existant as a Super 8 feature so I am really quite pleased to have it in my collection.

Without a doubt, the rarest film in my collection is the 2400ft color feature ' The Magic Box' - the 1951 Festival of Britain film about the birth of the cinema in the UK, and starring just about every British film actor of the time.

Paul, there's not many of us here that actually went to the "Telekinema" at the Festival of Britain and were inspired by what we saw there. (And for those across the pond that have flown into Gatwick since then... the only thing at Gatwick in those days was a derelict racecourse and annual Air Show)

I envy you Paul, I love "Horror Express",

MOst of my rarities are the optical super 8 features, such as Rocky 3 or Children of a Lesser God ...

But my favorites ae the rare cartoons, such as "Sunshine Makers" in color and sound, (and very good color at that!), and "Magoo Beats the Heat" in color and scope!, among others.

How about six Marx Brothers features (HORSE FEATHERS,DUCK SOUP,A DAY AT THE RACES,AT THE CIRCUS,ROOM SERVICE,A NIGHT IN CASABLANCA) and three Harry Langdon silent features (TRAMP TRAMP TRAMP ,LONG PANTS,HIS FIRST FLAME) for starters ? All in super or standard 8. [Smile]

Well, here's my rare prints:

Disney's ROBIN HOOD (good Italian print)
Disney's SONG OF THE SOUTH (very good/excellent Italian print)
Disney's THE RESCUERS (excellent Italian print)
Disney's PETE'S DRAGON (not the best Italian Disney's)
Disney's BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS (good Italian print)
Disney's FANTASIA (very poor Italian print)

Spielberg's ET - The Extra-Terrestrial (American full-lenght print)
Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD (good Italian print - European cut)
Argento's TENEBRAE (good italian print)

I'm anyway so happy with them, even if probably not so rare... [Big Grin]

2. Legend of the Werewolf - full length
3. The Longest Yard (Mean Machine) - full length
4. Carry on Screaming - full length
5. Enter the Dragon - 4x400ft

I wasn't aware Horror Express was rare. It was released here by Red Fox. I have a print and a number of other collectors I know have a print. I do have a super 8 print of the Marx Brothers' Animal Crackers...it was printed by the man who invented the Extend a Reel...who within a year or so after printing it, died. He only put out a very few things...things that were his favorites. I don't believe there were more than two or three of the Animal Crackers prints made.

Hi Gary,
thanks for the information regarding "Horror Express". I bought my print from a German collector but there was no information as to the distributor. It isn't in a Red Fox box but is housed in those crystal cases that swing open with original artwork on 4X600ft reels. I have never seen these type of cases in this size before and here in the UK I found it a quite difficult title to find on Super 8.

Paul.

Hi-Jean-Marc

I used to own a copy of the Monty Python spam episode which was hilarious,I bought it new from Les Sydal of Regent films Blackpool in the late 70's,it originally came on 2 x 400ft spools in a plain cardboard box,I think it was released by Canterbury films in the USA?

I wish I had held onto it as I never came across a copy again,I think I traded it in to Perry's Movies Wimbledon.

Perhaps you have my copy??

Cheers MW

Maybe I have your Monty Python episode! Mine is a black and white conversion with a military film service logo on it, which leads me to believe it was shown on ships at sea and other bases and places with no telly. It's on one 600' reel.

The "I Love Lucy" episode I mentioned in an earlier post is another rarity. I also have a "Horror Express." I can't tell who the original manufacturer is, but it's not Niles, that's for darn sure. The colors are still very good and the sound is clear. Interestingly, it's on four 400' reels (as opposed to the 4x600 mentioned by others here) but it doesn't feel incomplete. The story is comprehensible and the violence is intact.

Another interesting piece of film I have is a "Poltergeist" pre-release teaser trailer featuring rather dubious interviews with "paranormal experts." At that time the studio was going more for hard-hitting horror and planned to release it with an "R" rating as indicated by the MPAA ratings card at the beginning of the trailer. There's only one scene from the film included: a quick snippet of the kids struggling against the black hole in the closet. The rest is stills.

Also have the Walton 4x400 "Witchfinder General." Colors have held up fairly well and the story doesn't suffer from the sight abridgment.

Finally, I have a Niles print of Pete Walker's "Schizo," which is a little brown but not too bad. I lived in the same town as Niles Film Products (South Bend, Indiana) and used to go to their storefront to buy/trade films. "Schizo" was one of the first they offered in Super 8mm and Betamax tape! I don't ever see it on any used lists, so I don't know how many film versions made it out there. It's an endearingly ramshackle 1976 slasher with poor Lynne Frederick providing the cheesecake. And it's so-o-o-o English. You just want to bring out the Guinness and chip butties while watching it!

My rarities in Super 8mm are feature prints of "Close Encounters", "Bride of Frankenstein" and the 1931 "Dracula". There's also that homemade (not my home) print of "Dracula A.D. 1972".

I've been told there aren't too many Super 8mm copies of an intermission reel I have that features dancing concession foods along with a countdown ("The show will start in 10 minutes").

Bill, welcome to the Forum!

Bill, we both have the Python and "At the Devil's Ball"! "Devil's Ball" is a recut of Starewich's "The Mascot," which is a children's film. It was recut to be a propaganda piece! When you see "The Mascot" you understand what the dog has to do with everything but it dilutes the weirdness of the recut. You can see it on Youtube:

Well, no rare features here, but maybe these couple of short reels fit in:

"High on the Range" (Super-8.) one episode of a 1920es serial starring famed stuntman Yakima Canutt as a cowboy trying to battle (of all things) pot smoking on a ranch....quite the subject for a 20es Western serial. Terrible transfer, but definitely one of a kind.

Also in Super-8, the test reel from "Creation", Willis O'Brien's cancelled project just before "King Kong."
Featuring similar jungle sets, it has a pretty impressive chase scene with Ralf Harolde running for his life as a mother Triceratops is in hot pursuit after her offspring has been shot.
Interesting for what was to follow with "Kong."

Claus.

Like Kevin, I also have Red Fox prints of FRA DIAVOLO (Laurel & Hardy)and ROBIN HOOD (Errol Flynn). I didn't think the latter was that rare, though.

I would add:

UNACCUSTOMED AS WE ARE (L&H, sound/talkie version, Blackhawk)
SMALL TALK (Our Gang, Blackhawk)
THAT'S MY WIFE (L&H, Vitaphone track- only reason my print is rare, Blackhawk)
RAILROADIN' (Our Gang, sound/talkie version, Blackhawk)
YOUNG IRONSIDES (Charley Chase, Blackhawk)

I think some of my Stan Laurel solo shorts (SHOULD TALL MEN MARRY? - Blackhawk, ON THE FRONT PAGE - unknown, and EVE'S LOVE LETTERS - unknown) are also pretty rare.

Tony,

Would you also include L&H Blackhawk prints with Vitaphone scores of:
Angora Love, Wrong Again.
Also They Go Boom is not a very common title.

The Battle of the Century extended version is also a very rare title.
Not complete, because it is missing the scenes with the boys signing
the fight contract. However the Boxing Match is in place.
It also contains a very nice score by Gaylord Perry.

By the way, was the Our Gang short: Cat, Dog & Company released with the vitaphone score on Super 8?

My rarest on 16mm is probably the Ealing classic "The Ladykillers" in IB Tech, followed by "The Ipcress File" in Scope and Tech, "Alfie" in scope and Tech and a Scope print of "The Graduate" - seen loads of these flat but very few in Scope. Idiotically I've sold off Jaws and Grease, both scope prints, but to be honest they were both pretty worn out.

Tom,

I also have a Blackhawk Std. 8 sound print of Thicker Than Water
and it contains all of the original MGM titles.
The contrast is super sharp and dense theatrical quality.

Along the same line with a Std. 8 Sound print of On the Wrong Trek.
-great theatrical quality, but not with all of the MGM titles.

Last year I got a S8 print of Jiri Trnka's "The Hand". Marvelous animation. Something I never thought I would be able to find on S8.

My rarest prints are 16mm prints. One is a print of David Lynch's "Eraserhead" (has a few issues) and the latest acquisition is a nice print of Jim Jarmusch's "Mystery Train".

I must admit that I'm very envious of people having the Spam/Hungarian phrase book episode from Monty Python Flying Circus. Jean-Marc, your nipples must explode with delight...

Gaylord Perry is famous for his spitball, not organ music accompaniment to silent films. I think you meant Gaylord Carter.

[Big Grin]

I don't have those other Vitaphone prints Michael mentions, but, yes, I would consider them rare. I have THEY GO BOOM, but since that was in release by BH for many years -- not so rare. UAWA wasn't released with the soundtrack until 1979 -- pretty late in the game -- VCRs were already playing in people's homes by then. Long version of BATTLE is extremely rare. (I don't have it -- only pie fight version.)

My Blackhawk THICKER THAN WATER also has M-G-M titles -- I thought that was unique to my print -- like an "answer" print. WRONG TREK I have, but that title shows up A LOT on eBay.

Once Upon A Time In The West!! That must have been an expensive addition, and in scope! marvelous!

I think my ultimate rarity is "Close Encounters of the Third Kind ... 1977 version. We all know that Derann released about 13 or 15 copies of the 1980's "Special Edition", but we're all still baffled as to where this 1977 version scope feature came from.

Some of the best guesses are that it's an "Oil Rig" print, specifically manufactured to be shown on those rigs, and I have never seen another 1977 version ever pop up anywhere!

By the film stock markings, we seem to have discovered that it was a print from 1983.

... and it's a beautiful print besides all that. Lovely colors and extremely sharp.

Hi Mike,

I understand very well that you didn't want to sell it. But We didn't never know... [Wink]

Once in my life ( it was in 1999, on the liege filmfair in Belgium ), I've seen a 16mm copy of this film, scope and with great colors. But 5 minutes too late... [Frown]

So, I've bought antoher great film in such conditions: the good, the bad and the ugly. Very happy but not as "once upon a time in the west".
Enjoy your film! For me, it's one of the best Sergio Leone film and one of the best western ever made!

When I had ordered it from Blackhawk, it had taken about
a year before receiving it. Blackhawk sent updates that the
film may not be released and if I wished to have my check
returned? They needed a written response that I was still
interested in the film. My reply was NO thanks and was glad
because it was worth the wait.

Over the past few years, I have debated whether I should sell
it? But have ultimately backed out.

In it being as much a rare item, I do wonder what it would
be worth in today's market?

Micheal

(by the way, always good to hear from ya)

I do know of a certian forum member, (who, if they should wish to, may make themselves known), who paid a couple hundred dollars for the extended versiopn of "battle" about a year or so ago. This probably wouldn't be the norm, but I wouldn't be surprised if that particular title would bring in a good hundred at least!

A Hards Days Night!

Did you re-record the audio into stereo? It's certianly a candidate for that!

It is not necessarily desirable, but I have "Over The Top" with Sylvester Stallone. I think it is rare however.

I have been going through my films for another clearout of titles and came across this title. It is the last 600ft only and is optical sound. I don't recall any optical (airline) prints much later than this.

Even though it is the last 30 minutes, it is almost like a digest as you pick the story up and have the conclusion at the arm wrestling tournament.

Strangely like some other optical prints from the mid-80's onwards it has some fade. This being years after LPP. Old SP stock used I wonder? I can't tell from edge markings.

I have a few other complete and part features on Super 8 to go through, I'll let you all know if I find any others I think are rare.

David,

According to imdb, Over the Top was released in 1987.

There were several airline prints reported here to be released after that, i.e James Bond: "The Living Daylights" (1987), "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988), "Beetlejuice" (1988) and (probably the last airline print)"The Hunt for Red October" (1990, w. Sean Connery).

The link in this forum is here: Airline print was stil made until 1987 ! (or ?)

cheers,

Thanks Winbert.

I recall screening Over The Top in the multiplex I worked in back then in 35mm, yet this print has a copyright date of 1988!

There must have been only a few airlines with Super 8 by the late 80's.

I am halfway through running Acquasanta Joe (1971) a spagetti western in 3 x 400 format. Is this a rare one too? Who released it?

Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on September 27, 2009, 01:01 PM:

Yes, apparantly, though Super 8 optical all but ended by late 1987 (perhaps a few in 88), the opticals continued overseas in Japan/spain and other areas that still ran super 8 optical on the flights, though the only later one I have actually seen was a "Hunt for Red October" but no releases between 1988-1990, besides the already mentioned "Hunt".

Thye sad thing is, even if there are some great 88-89-90 releases, they would be in a foreign language, and even if you found one, you would have to completely stripe the film, which would cost a butt load of money ...

... or learn that specific language!

35mm TITANIC (97 version) feature

I would have to list my 600ft "digest" of the first 30 minutes of "Revenge of the Sith" scope/stereo. While there will be a few collectors the worldwide who'll be able to kick up the 800.00 or so dollars for the whole feature (after recording it and such), but I bet I'll be the rarer exception with a proper digest of it!!

My rare titles would be:

- tenessee partner(super8 2x 800')
- roustabout(6x400')
- one eyed jacks(3x400')

but what I really would like to find on super 8 is will penny.Regards.

On Super 8mm I've one of the CE3K SE Scope feature prints and a rather worn Super 8mm Scope Feature Length print of JAWS which must be of Germanic origin as it has the U8 titles tagged on the front!

On 16mm apart from the anaglyphic 3-D complete Feature Length prints I've mentioned before... CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON 3-D, REVENGE OF THE CREATURE 3-D and The MAD MAGICIAN 3-D I now also have a complete Feature Length print of ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

Maybe it's time I answered this.....

1. Deep Throat. Yes. That one. Missing some footage and faded color. But still a gem nonetheless. It is very graphic. It is also very funny.

2. Fantasia 1940. All parts together as feature length. Begins with the actual trailer for the movie. Ends with the trailer for Fantasia 2000. Sweet!

3. Jurassic Park. Recently made brand new print in 2008.

4. Lucky Pierre. Haven't even seen this one yet because it arrived today. But sounds like campy fun.

5. Emmanuel. Yes. That one. Sylvia Krystal's first film that made her a star.

6. Three different Titanic movies all feature length in the same collection. Raise the Titanic; A Night To Remember, and Titanic by James Cameron.

7. The original scope/stereo Star Wars Trilogy. A New Hope; Empire Strikes Back [German]; and Return of the Jedi. May the popcorn be with you.

8. Fantasia 2000. You can't have the first one without the second.

9. Grease from 1978. This is the newer version in cinemascope. While this might not really be a rare print to have, I include it as one of mine, because it was the first feature I ever bought in super 8. But at the time, it was the marketing films company flat release on 4 x 400. With everything that I learned about Derek Simmonds, how powerful he was in negotiating contracts for negatives, and how he cared about us collectors as well as the hobby it's self, I believe getting the remastered 1998 anniversary version put to scope was positively brilliant. It is true that Grease is not for everyone. But this can be said for every movie ever made. They're not for everyone and Grease should be the exception.

10. Two hundred and seventy five super 8 features in my collection. Not counting DVD or 16MM. I don't know if this really counts. But a collection that big is rare for a person like me!

Its not easy to say a print is realy rare. As I started to collect Film, the most I wanted was Star Wars. Finaly I get a Derann print and I sold it later as I get a 16mm print. Now the 16mm print is also sold.
I think some of the reversal prints of unknown movies are the rarest prints on Super 8 because they exist often only one or two prints.
In the last 15 years I get every print I wanted.
The prints made me most happy was
Super 8: Star Wars (first the Marketing Version, and later Derann full feature)
16mm: IB Tech scope The Girl can´t help it and LPP Batman (1966 with Adam West)

I have in my collection many realy rare 35mm prints (for example Technicolor prints of Singing in the rain, This Island Earth, To catch a thife, breakfast at tiffanys, White Christhmas etc.) but I was no more so happy as I get the 3 features listed above.
Unfortunately from this 3 features, I own only the 16mm Batman print now, the other are sold.
Sometimes you are more happy with a no rare print than a rare one.

Antoine ...

Is Sunbeam that 1980's cartoon, (I've only seen screen captures) of a 1940's radio show setting with a largely black cast? If so, who put it out on Super 8? I always heard that it was a fun cartoon.

"All this and Rabbit Stew" Banned Bugs Bunny cartoon because of the black stereotypes and faded, but still kind of fun, if slightly disturbing.

Boy Chip! and I thought I had too many at 70 or 80 features!

Hi to all here, just found this site, thought I was the only one wowed by 8mm movies, I started my collection 3 years ago, my most treasured 8mm movie is the original King Kong. My partner got this for me and I was a very happy man on xmas day (2009) I use a Bolex SP8 for my movies, it has a built in speaker, which helps, I watched King Kong, well the 1st 2 reels and loved it. I'm selling my body and brain so I can invest in a better projector, it is a little clunky, but it has served me well [Smile] I hope to invest in full feature movies, and will keep popping back here for ideas [Smile] Well happy new year to all, and keep those projectors projecting [Smile]

Kurt, I just learned something new about Poltergeist. I did not know MGM's original strategy for this film.

"Another interesting piece of film I have is a "Poltergeist" pre-release teaser trailer featuring rather dubious interviews with "paranormal experts." At that time the studio was going more for hard-hitting horror and planned to release it with an "R" rating as indicated by the MPAA ratings card at the beginning of the trailer. There's only one scene from the film included: a quick snippet of the kids struggling against the black hole in the closet. The rest is stills."

Yes, I think the "Poltergeist" trailer was intended for viewing by a trade organization like the National Association of Theatre Owners, and was never intended to be seen by the general public. But some clever little bugger at the lab must've thought Spielberg's name meant big business and made a reduction. I don't know who offered it on Super 8mm. Mine was attached to a used print of "Jaws" that I bought at a collector's show.

Yeah, NATO usually had their convention in the spring, and the studios wined and dined theatre owners, many screenings, and lots of product to push for the upcoming seasons. I'm guessing they still have a convention of this type?

Wow, finding that attached to your Jaws print was a nice find, I'm sure.

Additionally to my first post in this thread there are:

- Indiana Jones and the temple of doom (Scope)
- Indiana Jones and the last crusade (Scope)
- Lone Wolf McQuade (optical sound)
- Rio Bravo
- Star Wars (Scope)
- The return of the Jedi (Scope)
- Titanic (Scope)

I think my reversal copy of "The great race" (with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood and Jack Lemmon) is the rarest title in my collection. Don't know, if there is another print of it in any collection.

I'd add the following to my rarest:

- SUSPIRIA (Dario Argento, 1977)
- IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS (Robert Stevenson, Disney's Production, 1962)
- THE MILLION DOLLAR DUCK (Vincent McEveety, Disney's Production, 1971)

"The Takedown"

An almost unknown live action Disney feature from the late 70's about a high school wrestling team. Not a comedy, though it has comedy moments.

The very first PG Disney's (it was released in 1979).
Another piece of news. I did not know a 8mm optical edition of this existed [Eek!] .

Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on January 08, 2010, 09:38 PM:

Give that man a big Carona Carona!

Yep, it was they're first PG film. They were very timid about releasing it as a Disney release so, though it carried they're "Buena Vista" title card, it didn't say at the beginning they're characteristic "Walt Disney Presents" on it.

It was Lorenzo Lamas's first theatrical film. His girlfriend was played by none other than "Marcy Brady" from the Brady Bunch and it even had a young Stephen Furst, (who would later rise to fame on the sci-fi TV series "Babylon 5").

I don't know how many optical features of this escaped the "chopping block" but my print is just slightly off in color, very passable. It's so rare that, except for a brief release early on, on VHS, it has never been seen on Laserdisc, DVD or Blu-ray. Even VHS copies of this tend to go for a lot. It's one of those films where a bunch of no-gooders in High School decide to join together to form a wrestling team to take on the national champions. One of those "root for the underdogs" films!

Gian ...

"SpaceBalls" would have to be either Kodak SP or L.P.P., as my print has also held up perfectly, but I have heard of prints of this starting to brown.

Bad eastman stock (the pinky kind) was already out of the picture, but I do know that Kodak SP was used for quite awhile on optical features.

I have no idea how many 8mm of 'Operation Paradise' could be in circulation. 35mm there are, at most, a half dozen; if ya wanna call it circulation. Unfortunately its got the fade. I'll do a transfer and color correct it (dub a second english audio) when (march?) I can get to it. Its the full 'director's' cut version, altho, (obviously) in italian.
As for being that exact same box, my reels are clear, and the gold sticker is not there. I did get it this fall from italy via ebay. Maybe its that one... [Roll Eyes]
Just spun it a little thru an editor, haven't even projected it, too nerveous and dont have a quality projector that has the least chance to mess up the print. I was tempted to get an eumig 810 recently tho...

And yes the score for the movie is great. It seems to be in mono tho. Btw 'moonraker' was copied from this this spy 'spoof' movie. [Wink]

OPERAZIONE PARADISO was issued by Sagittarius. Authorized edition, but red cast to the color (in general, talking about all their issues).

All movies released by Sagittarius here in Italy are not complete (edited versions).

The movie is quite rare. But not impossible to find. A copy was for sale on Ebay some weeks ago. Ciao.

There was originally a red cast on the print new? That explains that, thanks.

What I mean is that the bits that are edited out in the US version is in the Sagittarius version. Tho something else was cut...I'll have to run it all thru first. Looks like about 1200 ft- 80 min, out of a 106 min film. Well I got to log this puppy. Thanks again!

Keith,
I think my "Rio Bravo" is the same print as CHC released it.
It is made by German Lab, very good colour and sharpness.

I have recently (last week) found a copy of Argento's L'UCCELLO DALLE PIUME DI CRISTALLO (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), the very first feature he directed in 1970.

It's unfortunately a terrible print on a reddish Eastman (I would probably never post any screen shots of that copy here on the forum [Frown] ) but my happiness is immeasurable: another title I had been after for very longime and I did want to own on 8mm. Not interested at all in its condition.

I don't know how rare they are, but I have hardly ever seen any of these in used lists.

Firstly it is four features from Marketing. "Grease", "Airplane!", "One-Eyed Jacks" and "The Godfather".

I also have the two Universal/John Wayne features "The Conqueror" and "Jet Pilot".

And lastly a Harold Lloyd feature "The Sin Of Harold Diddlebock"

Have not run any of these for years, so I don't know what shape they are in.

Hi Lars. I also have the two Wayne features. They were released by Universal 8 and if yours are like mine, they will have started to turn "pink". Mine are still very watchable, even if some may say that they are two of the "Duke's" worst films. If you are a Big Duke fan then you just have to have them in your collection.

I would love to find a full length Marketing print of "True Grit", as I heard that they released it as a full length feature!

Lars,

One-Eyed Jacks would be a rare print. I have come across a copy once in all my collecting years - I think it was a Derann or other UK used list.

A strange film to release on Super 8. An indulgent Brando western thought of much more highly today.

David
