I have the opportunity to buy a Sankyo 700 sound projector. I have seen it working and the only problem with it is that it wont project at the correct speed in reverse. I was told it has something to do with the clutch and that it can be fixed but am unsure. I would be grateful for any information about this machine, it's reliability and if belts and other spares are readily available.

Hi Paul

I ownd a Sankyo 700 for many years(a decade i believe),and in all that time it never once damaged a film,they are verygood projectors alomng with the 800 stereo model if you keep them clean.

It only has one drive belt and the takeup belt,these seem to last almost for ever,but if you need one you can get these on Ebay without too much of a problem.

As for the slow reverse,mine was like that too,it may have needed a re-grease of its gears,but they looked fine so i left it.
I myself believe and others may not agree,that you should'nt run films in reverse as this can cause lines and other problems or damage to you films,even though you have this option on most projectors,i dont believe thats what they were really designed for,the film should go one way and once done you use the rewind option.but that not to say you cant use the rewind funtion to que the start of your film afew frames.

If you can get the owers manual,thats a good start as it will help you to maintain the projector,even though it quite simple,and if you can find one,a service manual for trouble shooting.

Many thanks for your reply. I have seen a few of the Sankyo Dualux on ebay and they look like a well made machine. I was told by a very experienced film buff that the Sankyo 800 is the better of the sound machines, but just comparing the specs for the 700 and 800, the 800 has the brighter (150 W ) lamp stereo playback , 15W amp and larger reel capacity, but they are as rare as hens teeth. The 700 seems a pretty good machine.

The 800 is not at all rare. They often turn up on Ebay and on dealers lists. In fact there's one on ebay uk at the moment.

Paul,Michael is correct,i see them quite often and they dont cost that much,but sadly afew dealers mark thier projectors up and extra 100 or more,but you can get them at a good price by looking round.

Secondly,yes! the 800 runs a brighter lamp,but the 700 has a good lense and brightness was never an issue with it.

And lastly,apart from the stereo,the 700 and 800 are about the same,they both have excellent sound.Also,i took the takeup arm off my Sankyo 700,its held by only one screw on the outside and took the release arm off another old 700 and put it were the shorter takeup arm was and was able to run 800feet reels without and stress or probems at all,i just could,nt fold the takeup arm down for storage,small price to pay for a big gain.

Michael,if i ever see one here i will let you know,i sold my last one a year and a half ago for $150NZ as no one here pays much for anything,everyone is as tight as a rusty screw.

eg:I just bought two working Elmo ST1200,s(ST1200M,ST1200HD M+O)for less the $300NZ with a sync counter and 6 reels of splicing tape,two reels of leader(1 black,1 white and a fuji splicer,and today he said he has found more stuff he is putting in for free,but he said i,ll have to wait and see what it is as he wont tell me,but did say it added 1 Kg to one of the box's.

Many thanks to Michael, Barrie and Simon and thanks to Michael for the ebay link. Unfortneatly, some ebay sellers won't ship outside of the UK or Europe and, so far I have'nt seen any 800 machines in Australia where I live and I look on ebay and other sites pretty regularly.
