If you have many 200' films (e.g. Disney, Tom & Jerry, Digest, etc) and you have bigger reels (600', 800'), do you prefer to join them into bigger reels or leave them in their original spool?

I always used to leave them as 200ftWinbert, but in the last 3 years I have been joining them up. Some I keep all Warner Bros cartoons or all Disney others I mix up. I find I am watching them more often too. You'll find that 4 cartoons will fit on many 600ft reels.

I have also joined up all my 2 x 400ft and 3 x 400ft digests too. Once I was reluctant to cut leaders and tails (strange given I do it every day at work), but now I find them far more watchable without the re-threading.

I've gone further and joined up "like" digests. One example is Vanishing Point in German with Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry in French. Both of these feature Dodge muscle cars, Challenger and Charger respectively.

I keep everything as single reelers. If needed, I build up programs on larger reels.

I'm fairly certain the last purchase I made was late 70's, perhaps even 1980. Even then I spliced them onto 600ft reels though there’s about eight 200ft reels that I never got around to doing, even though I had bought the reels for the job. I was only thinking these past few days to get onto it. 30 years...pftt!!!
Anyway, for titles like Jungle Book and Bambi I put the sequences in order with a short first up. I have some Italian sourced Warner cartoons all on single reels too.
So for me, an approximate 30 minute screening between stops for reel changes has always been a good balance for commercial type films. I feel a little different with home movies where I now prefer them to be on 400 foot reels, especially the ones I shot at 18fps.

I keep them all on separate reels so that when I need one to use for a screening, I can get at it without delving into a big reel and trying to get it out..and then having to turn around and put it back.

David, if they are two or three parter (multi reels) film, yes it is more enjoyable having them spooled in one big reel.

I just purchased several 400/600 reels and there 2 or 3 films inside. Although I don't need to change reels often now but it is a bit annoying when I wanted to see the 2nd of 3rd film inside the reels.

I am now thinking to spool them back into 200' reels. So anyone have extra 200' reels and want to trade with several 400' reels. Most of the reels are the good one (if I am not mistaken they are Gepe/Bonum) in the original box.

I believe compiling prints together on one big reel, devalues the print...making it less desirable by other collectors. I make it a point to keep all the prints as is with the original countdown leaders intact and in their original boxes.

If I have a 2x200 or 3x400 of the same title I will combine them. However, I keep the original leaders and boxes for resale purposes.

Winbert, I sold off most of my 200's but I did keep two of my Disney favorites. I put them together on a 400' many years ago. "Cinderella's Surprise Dress" & "Cinderella's Fairy Godmother" are a perfect fit. However, like Pat, I did keep the heads and tails. I don't think I'll separate them, though, as I probably will never sell them. Besides, I don't have the original boxes. It's in a silver Blackhawk box. I plan to make artwork for the cover. Actually, I've been planning to do it for over 25 years now! Maybe this year... [Smile]
