I am new to all this. I have a Revere Model 85 projector. It came with the manual that says where and how often to oil the spots (every 10 hours of projection time) but what kind of oil should I use?

I use sewing machine oil that can easily be purchased at a sewing machine store. It's mineral oil and one small bottle will last a long time.

Oil the spots ? What do you oil ? And do you need to oil elmo projectors. I don't think I ever oiled a projector every 10 hours? I don't think I ever oiled a projector should I be?

The older 8mm projectors required regular oiling like Marc's Revere 85. They usually have several small holes that you add a drop of oil to. The oil wets a wick that runs to parts that need the oil. If the projector has not been oiled in a long time you need to give it a good dose, like 5 or 10 drops, since the wick can dry out over time. My Bolex M8 and Keystone K109D both require oil like that.

I oil my super 8 projectors as well by adding a drop to the bearings of spinning shafts. That's in addition to adding white lithium grease to the gears. Even though the manual may not have an oil or grease requirement I still think its a good idea for an old machine. Grease gets old and hard and oil can dry up.

What will happen if you don't oil ? I have never oiled a projector and it has been 30 years of use? I have in my experence only seen lamps and fan belts needing replacements, I don't think as a kid with my old projector ever oiling it. Why don't they sell or tell you when you buy them in the manuel to oil them? I guess it seems natural like a car needs oil. There should be instructions on how and where to do it like illustrations or something. If it is so important to the life of the machine.
