A few months back I was getting really annoyed when I knew I had a particular title and could not find it anywhere. I had let the 8' x 5' x 20" deep closet o' film get pretty disorganized. Some shelves were two layers deep so if a film was trying to hide from me, it didn't have to work too hard. Reaching the enough is enough stage, I took a dozen (at least) very large boxes and started to categorize each film into a box as I emptied the closet. Deranns here, Kens over there, scope stuff in the corner......after I removed the last print I realized I had misplaced the living room. It was somewhere underneath all those boxes. My family tolerates the hobby with a fair amount of patience, but they also wanted to be able to move around the apartment....and where exactly is the dog?

Asking them to bear with me for a few days longer (after locating the dog), I pulled out the warped shelves, the two bookcases and the bent supports. I painted the interior, picked up shelving at Home Depot....went back to Home Depot to get more supports (learned that lesson)....and finally started putting films back.

 -

Deciding not to have two layers of films cost me storage space, but the free standing wire racks help a great deal.

 -

The two smaller racks are Columbia titles. The taller one is for 200' Disneys.

 -

German Language titles on the upper left side, Features on 400' reels live on the top shelf. Derann & Kempski share the second shelf.

 -

Universal 8 2x400's on the third shelf, U-8 400 footers on the one below. 200' Castles come next. The sixth shelf has the 200' Ken Films releases and the seventh has the Ken 400' line.

 -

Marketing's classy boxes on the upper right side.

 -

Iver, Techno, Major 8, UFA, Warner, Columbia & MGM clamshells coexist nicely on the eighth shelf. Waltons are on a side shelf to the left.

Next are scope, 3-D, and 400' Disney films.

The bottom rows are features on large reels, both in boxes and cans.

 -

Cans are on the floor, since that would be asking a bit too much of of the shelf supports.

I should really point out that this is the closet o' sound film. Blackhawks and silents (not to mention 16mm) are hidden away elsewhere.

Do stamp collectors have a closet o' stamps?

If I ever get accused of having too many films I will just show these pictures!

Fantastic Doug, just fantastic.

Cheers

So that is what film heaven looks like. Seeing this is like seeing the inside of Fort Knox. Amazing collection and excellent organizing. There is only one site better looking than this and that's the Playboy centerfold. And I'm not sure of that. Thanks for sharing the pics Doug. [Eek!]

Doug that is beautifully organized, but what did you have to trade the wife to give up a whole closet? I had to trade a whole room...One extra bedroom is her office, and one walk in closet is mine [Razz] - but i did negotiate one sliding glass shelving unit in her office for 200 footers.

I still don't see the dog. [Smile]

Looking good Doug! I love organizing my film collection too!

Got room for Gammera?

Amazing Doug! Just looking at your pictures make me euphemistically feel more organized [Smile] Thanks.

ER uh what does euphemistically mean? I had to cut and paste it cause I didn't know how to spell it [Eek!]

Great collection Doug. Nice boxes and very well organised.

Did you buy most of it in the golden Super 8 days or the last decade?

Do you buy mostly from dealers or ebay...or both?

Thanks for the great response!

Terry, Pat, Michael, Joe T., Richard, Janice, Timothy, Thanks for the kind words.

Akshay, nice observation.....there's definitely not much room left!

Dino, I think it was her way of getting these films out of sight.

Alan, I believe the pooch is munching on some Niles prints....better that than watching them. You've also seen what the original closet was like.

Bill, There just happens to be a spot for Gamera in the Godzilla section with the UFA and Marketing Toho titles.

David, My first go round in this hobby ended in 1980, so the vast majority of these were picked up after I got back into it in 2002. There's a ton of eBay films, however most of the features are from dealers.

Joe B., I lost the girls and the snack bar in the trade off to get the entire closet.

I showed the Closet O' Film to my wife last night.

She asked:

"Is he married?"

(Don't see what that has to do with anything!)

Wow Doug that's quite the film collection you have there! I need to get organized as well & catalog my films because I have actually purchased films I already had! [Confused]
