Hi all,

Few weeks ago we discussed this brand. I finally purchased 4 of them so I made a test, and found it was so bright.

I compared with Sylvania, while Sylvania has white tone goes to warm, USHIO has white tone goes to green.

Below is a photo between the two lamps. But absolutely it will not represent anything since there is no camera can replace our own eyes. But just for an idea:

 -

One more thing that we discussed earlier, I can confirm that USHIO has lug on the edge of the bulb (see photo):

 -

 - .

This is a projector bulb, not the one for disco. So you will be assured to have bright images, not yellowish like those for DJs.

 -

 -

 -

Last but not least, the USHIO bulbs are still made in Japan, so it is not those cheap chinese made.
cheers,

Many thanks to Winbert for the interesting details.

Here, in the UK, as, no doubt in the USA, so many of the EFR (A1/232) lamps are sold for disco and stage work and don't have the concentrated output for cine work.

So, to be sure of a cine projector lamp it is my preference to buy a Xenophot which seems to be more ideal for the job.

I have just ordered a batch of four of the Ushio, the postage to UK is USD$9.82 (GBP£6.28).

The cost of each lamp is GBP£2.08, this compares with UK prices of approximately GBP£6.00 for the slightly unknown lamps, whereas the better xenophots cost around GBP£8.00.

Who can resist a bargain?

Thanks Maurice.

Since my projectors are now using EFR, I need more stocks.

Hi Winbert, does the 15 volt/150 watt lamp have the same physical dimentions as the more common 12 volt 100 watt lamp? I have a Sankyo 700 that I would like to try one in, fed from an external transformer of course. Thanks MIKE

Hey Winbert
After seeing your test I wouldn't mind comparing what I have to the Ushio. Would you mind getting me a couple?
Cheers
Terry

Michael, if we see the specification given on Donsbulb.com for both EFP & EFR ...yes they are the same:

EFP: http://www.donsbulbs.com/cgi-bin/r/b.pl/efp.html

EFR: http://www.donsbulbs.com/cgi-bin/r/b.pl/efr.html

both has:

base: GZ6.35 - Glass, European 2-pin round 1mm; 6.35mm centered (found on MR lamps)
glass: MR16D

You can see also on the diagram of both bulbs for the above value have nothing different shape.

Glass:

 -

and

base:

 -

So yes you can interchange between them....but don't forget to use external transformer AND fan

Terry, yes if I meet him I will get a couple for you (meaning two right? not the colloquial meaning for several).

But this Saturday he is not available while I can only drive on that day. I will let you know via PM if I can make it.

Mike,

I have two main machines that I run together: ST-800 (100W EFP) at ST-1200HD (150W EFR). They have the same gate and the same lens so they are a good testing ground for the difference the change of bulb would make.

Honestly, when I go back and forth between the machines the change in brightness is barely noticeable. If the two machines didn't sound different I'd be hard pressed to tell you which one was working without looking back at the table.

Probably if you had identical prints and put them side by side you could see a slight difference, but the change is subtle enough that if you watched them one after another you might think they were lit by the same lamp.

So I think if you do this mod you probably won't think it was worth it.

Given the choice, I'd go with 150W every time, but I wouldn't struggle very hard to get there.

Steve, I am afraid you always switch your ST-1200 on economy (low) light setting.

If you set to high you will notice the different.

I always thought like you before, but when I did the above testing by switching low to high (without film) I found the different is so noticeable.

I now think that the low setting on ST 1200 making the bulb to light on (approx) 100w and high is 150w.

Winbert,

Nothing to be afraid of!

I'm running full blast. I used to run it in economy mode and realized that projection lamps are cheap, so I may as well live a little! (You only go around once after all!)

There's another part of this comparison I didn't mention: when I went from full throttle to economy, the ST-1200 was actually dimmer than the ST-800! So the difference between the settings is probably not between 100 and 150W, but maybe more like 75 or 80 and 150W.

My Canadian eBay order was despatched on 27 September and was received today. The four lamps travelled quite OK, they were well packed with bubble-wrap. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Many thanks again to Winbert for the link.

Good to know it Maurice. If it is possible could you do side by side comparison with other brand (hopefully Osram Xenophot) to knwo which one is brighter.

I have an impression that USHIO is brighter. But is it my eyes or the projector/lens.
