Has anyone seen one of these before?

Looks like its a 16mm reel converted to a S8 reel but with an off-centre hub??

Hello Mike

I've seen and used many 16mm spools converted to super 8 hubs over the years, however the more usual conversion was to take a 2000ft Tuscan 16mm spool, split it in half (they come apart fairly easily) break away the original hub and one half of the centre part (to make it 8mm wide) then glue or screw in a Kodak or similar 50ft spool for the new hub.

They made very good spools for long play units back in the day and the cost for a 16mm 2000ft spool then was only a few quid so cheap and easy to make.

Thanks, Kevin.

I hadn't come across one before. It just seems to me that this would be a problem as it appears to be off-centre.

I see what you mean Mike it is definitely a bit off centre looking at the pictures - probably fixable if screwed and not glued.

The more usual 1000ft super 8 spool conversions were made from NAB centre metal reel to reel spools with a Kodak super 8 50ft spool and its little outer can glued in place with resin glue.

They only took minutes to make and look very nice as the NAB spools are usually Elmo - style aluminium. I'll see if I have one here and will upload a picture of it later today.

Kevin.

I have one of these converted "NAB" reels using the 50 ft Kodak centre, and it works very well.

Yep, that's one of my auctions. The neat thing about the reel is that it holds 1,000 ft of super super 8, instead of the 800ft it originally held, as that center allows an extra 200ft right there!

Now, if I only has a projector that would allow me to use that sucessfully, I'd keep it! The problem is, it will actually fit onto the front half of my CHINON 9500, but my CHINON 9500 only has a 600ft take-up reel and no room for a slightly larger reel so, no good for me. [Frown]

Is it off-centre, Osi, or is this just the angle of the photo? You need to check that.

That's probably the angle of the photo, I wasn't directly overhead when I took the photo.

Probably?
It might be worthwhile just taking a look before the sale.

We're thinking along the same lines, Micheal ... [Smile]

Yesterday evening I took the reel out, (it no longer has film on it now), and I watched it as it spun on the projector and sure enuf, it's just fine.
