Ebay - 3x 400' film in the "Auction" mode for £25 - A good buy. Also open to offers. Ok, so I send an offer for £22 for the hell of it. The seller sends a counter offer.......... £45 !!!!! for a £25 film.

Question: Which one of us is the one extracting the urine?

Melvin, if it’s not a “buy it now”, the auction opening bid is £25, and not the actual sale price, but the seller’s counteroffer means he will sell it for £45...

Does Ebay do reserve prices on auctions? If so he could have been sending you the reserve price. If so he shouldn't have put that about offers in my mind.

Yes, as long as this is not a reserved acution.

FYI, in Ebay there are 4 types of listing:

1. Auction (= at the end of auction seller will sell whatever is the final price)
2. Auction with a reserved price ( = at the end of auction, seller will sell at reserved price or higher)
3. Buy it now (= you can buy at the price shown or send an offer)
4. Auction with Buy it now option (auction will run until the end of time except someone buy it and the auction is closed)

Yes, if the auction would end with a bid of £25, the seller would have to sell it at that price, but until it ends he could accept or reject higher or lower offers...

Just to clarify - it is a seven day auction, the offer received came in just hours after the auction start time, the seller started the auction at £25 as that is the minimum he is wiling to accept for the film (which also includes postage) however this is the minimum acceptable, and the seller gave the buyer the chance to win the auction very early on with a £45 counter offer.

I know this as I am the seller - cine_fan_uk - the term 'extracting the urine' may be better applied to bidders hoping to pick up a feature for £22 including postage!

Winbert - there is a fifth Ebay selling method now which is the one I used to make sure I took advantage of their £1 listing fee offer on Ebay.UK over the weekend - this is an auction with an offer option - not a Buy It Now as such but the ability for the bidder and seller to agree a mutual price to enable the auction to end early within Ebay rather than offline. Once a bid has been made the make an offer option disappears in the same way as a Buy It Now option would.

I need to mention that the reason behind my original post was to point out the discrepancy between the counter offer, and the potential to win it for less should the figure not reach the counter offer price, and by respectfully not mentioning the film in question or the name the Ebayer goes under secured their anonymity.
Kevin,you have chosen to voluntarily declare yourself as the seller, a situation I was unaware of.

Nowadays, to qualify for free listings, one must also include a Make An Offer in their sales.When I list items I also specify the lowest acceptable amount I would consider. Any lower receives an automatic rejection. It seems your lowest acceptable amount was, in fact, below even my offer price or you couldn't have sent a counter offer.

To your credit,Kevin,regardless of my "chancer" offer ( I prefer the word "chancer" rather than your alternative) your starting price of £25 is a very sensible one and confirms to me that you are one of the Ebay "good guys." I will place a bid, but using the usual auction method and let time speak for itself.

As far as the "urine" question is concerned.... On hindsight, I was a bit hasty with that remark and do regret it. However, also consider the fact that I had not even exempted myself for being the culprit!!

No problem and good luck with your bidding - regarding Ebay user name identification there is nothing to hide here I am more than happy for the world and his mate to know who I am - it would perhaps be nice if a thread existed where we could identify ourselves (voluntarily of course) by our Ebay user names then any films or cine gear listed would be easy to see when searched by seller whilst knowing we are dealing with one of our own.

I've found the offers option to be a positive one if just left at any amount - some good prices obtained when an eager buyer has offered a higher price to ensure they get the item, and interesting counter offers and messages (up to three goes per item I think) which usually still worked out well for both parties.

It's just a bit of fun and games on there for me (using Ebay since 2002) and a way to part with personal possessions no longer needed - I don't take any Ebay changes or regulations too personally - the recent £1 and £3 maximum final fee offers have been great though.

Please bookmark my ID as (when I feel up to it) I am listing films regularly now as only selling no longer buying cine so hopefully you will find other films of interest in due course.

I've done a slight edit to my previous post as upon reflection I agree my riposte was a little harsh and I like to try for a bargain as much as any one else!

No harm done. The anonymity bit was purely to not make it personal to the person who was selling (as it ended up,it was yourself) particularly as there was a possibility the seller was a member of this forum (!) and I know there have been one or two other threads here regarding Ebay that have become very close to the edge regarding personal clashes.

I like the idea of a thread to declare forum Ebayers so we know we are "dealing with one of our own." Good phrase.

I,too, do Ebay both for the fun of it, but also to fund this wonderful hobby of ours which can become expensive at times. Saves dipping into the bank balance!
