I have recently come across a bunch of 8mm and Super 8 mm films that I would like to sell. Other than EBay what/where can I come across a “Price Guide”? I have Citizen Kane, High Noon, African Queen, Laurel & Hardy, Chaplin to name a few. I have collected many 8mm films over the years not knowing anything about the value. I basically buy the ones I watched when I was a we lad at various outlets over the years. Three Stooges, Mighty Joe Young, Woody Wood Pecker as so on. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'd hate to be responsible for writing a pricing guide for films these days: it's a moving target!

There's basically no rhyme or reason these days. In certain cases with very common films like Blackhawk Laurel and Hardies there's enough supply and enough demand that some kind of a market price happens, but with many other films it's pretty unpredictable.

Sometimes a film shows up and there are two people really interested in it and the price goes through the roof. The same film comes up six months later and the only two people on the planet that are interested have their prints already and nobody wants it.

More and more when I bid on films I ask myself what the thing's really worth to me, place my maximum bid and walk away. If somebody else wanted it more, so be it.

David - Steve's words are very true. However, if you need someone to commit any sort of rough price to selling features, and I assume the first three titles are features (wow!) I usually go on a starting guideline of around $10 - $12 per 400'. Naturally, I would expect an ebay finishing price for those three to be MUCH higher.

For 400' digests, I guess a start price of $7 would be okay, unless it is called Star Wars / Alien / Raiders of The Lost Ark when you could double that. Laurel and Hardy's are also very good sellers. All these I would expect to finish at a higher price than stated.

Don't get sucked in by the opportunists on Ebay where their starting prices are silly money. Most will have been / will be on there for a long long time and, after all, you are aiming to actually get rid of them.

There..... I've said it now. Hope I don't get shot down too much by our colleagues who disagree with my pricing!!

Selling on eBay is quite difficult as regards pricing. Any item, whatever it is, is only worth what someone will pay for it.
