My Bell & Howell KX36 seems to auto feed to the take up reel, but just bunches up the super 8mm film around the spool. Shouldn't the take up reel (on left) be powered? I don't have any instructions and new at this, so anything could be causing the problem. I'm not even sure if I'm feeding in the film correctly. I added some pictures to show the path of the film into the take up reel.

Next photo shows it bunching after running it forward some more.

Final photo shows how the film doesn't even go back properly when put in Reverse.

The problem that you are having with your machine it looks like its the film claw its either bad or off adjustment please reply

Hi Glenn and welcome to the Forum. I'd like to offer another suggestion to your problem. Since the film is entering the gate making its way to the take-up reel...I don't think the claw is having a problem. These machines were designed with poor components and over the years parts have deteriorated and become misaligned.

I've worked on a few of these and have found adjusting a screw on the clutch can sometimes get the take-up reel to start spinning again (see screw indicated in pic below). I haven't worked on your specific model...but most are very similar.

You will have to remove the back to get to the clutch. Remove all visible screws on the back...in addition to a hidden screw in the spare bulb compartment.

Hi Janice, Thanks for spending your time to reply. After assessing the projector issues and my lack of knowledge on the subject, I decided to buy a Bell & Howell 10MS Dual 8 movie projector on craigslist. Its never been used, new in box, complete with manual, reels and working light bulb. Hopefully that moves me into a user role instead of a problem solver.
