I'm looking for sprocketless 8mm scanning. I know about the Retroscan Universal but do not like it for 8mm. Too much of a pain converting from 16 to 8 then back to 16. Prefer it as a dedicated 16 scanner.

They used to make the 8mm Retro-8 Film scanner that looked good, if it was capable of decent res, but they discontinued it. What R/S 8mm sprocketless scanning options are out there?

I'd be interested to know if there are actually any solely 8mm sprocketless scanners in the same price bracket as the Retroscan.

Of course, there are several 'pro' 8mm/16mm scanners out there which I can confirm are definitely sprocketless. I presume it would be way out of your budget to purchase and set-up one of these models in-house though. (the MWA FlashScan, FilmFabriek Muller HDS+, Lasergraphics ScanStation etc.)

I would have assumed, based on a sample I've seen, the Retroscan seems to deliver good results for 8mm though, certainly way nicer than the Wolverine for example. Could you elaborate what you don't particularly like about the scanner aside from switching the gates and what-not.

All I can say is that it takes longer to change a flat tire than to switch gates on the RetroScan Univ.and swap out the lens.
No complaints from me!
Gregory
