Here is a scenario.

You buy a top-end Super 8 stereo projector at a top-end price which is described as "Like new, without use". On arrival you pre-heat the lamp and run the motor to warm things up. You lace your test film. You start to view. Ten seconds later the lamp expires. You run the film back to the feed spool. You remove the dud lamp from its spring and holder. You can now see the rubber (?) jockey roller which holds the film on the flywheel shaft, the roller is coated across its width with a brown substance, is it magnetic oxide residue? It will take six cotton buds soaked in Isopropyl Alcohol to clean it all off. You now look at the removed lamp and see that its mirror has started to bloom and its glass envelope is darkened. It's a Sylvania made in W. Germany. You wonder if a Japanese projector would have been fitted with such a lamp. You check the box and note that there are items missing which are usually supplied with this model, film trimmer, microphone stand, gate brush, instruction book. You ponder if the projector really is like new, without use.

A Scenario is described as a written outline of a film, stage play or novel. But the above is not a scenario. It's all true, and has just happened to me with my latest acquisition. I am not naïve enough to believe that a projector which is probably about forty years old could be described as it was, but I do feel that the seller was probably carried away with such a lovely, much sought-after projector. But, having said all the above, I am not displeased with my buy.

Hi Maurice, unfortunate, but at least fairly easy fixes.

I'd be careful with Isopropyl Alcohol on rubber rollers, as it can cause older rubber to crack.

Thank you, Rob, for your advice. I did clean after the application with a cloth. A tight place to get to!
