Hi,

Working on a GAF 2388Z. Cleaned and lubed everything and replaced all the rubber. Everything works fine except when rewinding reel-to-reel. The film doesn't wind tight enough on the takeup reel and eventually spills off with results you can imagine. Is there supposed to be some device in there that puts a little friction on the supply reel during rewind? I can't find any trace of one. Thanks.

Hi John and welcome!

There a several configurations of the Gaf projectors throughout the different models. So without a pic of the back of your projector I can only give you some info based on my past experience. I haven't worked on these for a very long time.

The photos shown are off the internet and may be helpful.

Check to see in the take-up reel assy that there is a rubber tire in good condition on the pulley shown in the pic below.If not this will need replacing.

If the tire is ok, but the rewinding force of take-up reel is not enough, try cleaning the pulley (Pushing the Tire) with Windex or alcohol.

There is also a linkage adjustment you can try adjusting the placement of the pulleys.

Thanks for your reply, Janice. The projector insides in the pictures look exactly like mine, except that the tire on mine may be a little smaller. Before going any further, it looks like I made a terminology gaffe (pun intended) in my original post. In rewind, the reel at the rear technically becomes the supply reel and the one at the front (by the lens) the takeup. During projection, the front one is the supply and the rear one is the takeup. Probably most people would think of the one at the front as the supply reel regardless. So how about if we just call them front and rear to avoid confusion?

In any case, as you can see in your pictures, as well as on my machine, during rewind the tire never really makes contact with the black plastic drum attached to the rear spindle. And from what I can tell it's not supposed to. So there seems to be nothing to put any drag on the film as it rewinds. Any thoughts? I have a picture of mine but can't figure out how to upload it. Thanks.

I removed the back of one of my GAFs and took a photo of the supply reel (front) area. The belt is orange because I make my own belts [Smile]

. Yours may not look exactly like this but there should be a pulley with a rubber tire on it and a smooth pulley just above it that makes contact with the rubber tire on rewind. Mine is also connected to the main belt which turns the lower tired pulley. Other models have a small belt connected from the upper smooth pulley to the tired pulley to turn it. If yours is like that... the belt might be missing. I have an old junker in the garage that uses the small belt. I can take a photo if necessary. Never the less make sure the rubber tire is in good condition and making contact with the upper pulley when in reverse.

There also should be a spring that is located on the linkage. See if this is missing or loose.

I am attempting to load pictures of the insides of my projector here. Looks like it's exactly the same as yours. I don't find anything amiss in there. Note the bottom picture--that's in rewind mode and it looks like the tire is not meant to make contact with the plastic drum of the rear reel. For now the owner of the projector just wants it back. I was able to get it to rewind okay by putting some drag on the rear reel with my finger (gloves recommended) and I recommended that for the owner. Maybe in the future we can figure this out a little better. Thanks.
