It would be very helpful if Ian would grade the condition and print quality of the listed films like Steve Osbourne does, and like Derann used to do. Otherwise, how do you know what you are getting?

Posted by Ian O'Reilly (Member # 76) on December 09, 2014, 11:43 AM:

Hi Paul,
If I was to grade every print that I list, I would be at it till next Easter.
I would love to grade every print but as I have other business interests it does prohibit me from doing this.
If customers ask after a print I will give them my honest opinion on condition etc.
I like to pride myself on the fact that I don't sell junk, and should there be a problem customers who have dealt with me over the years know I will sort it.

HI, Jonathan. Did you receive any replies from Ian of Perry's .I sent two e mails to him but never received a reply .Alex

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on December 28, 2014, 11:59 AM:

Tell me what you are enquiring about mate, pm if u wish, and I will phone him tomorrow for you. I will let you know as soon as I have spoken with him.

Ian sometimes goes away from home a couple of times a year, as well as being very busy with his other businesses so that may explain why he has been unable to reply to your e mail.

There are a few things on this list i would LOVE!!
Problem is that we in Canada have the worst time purchasing because:
a) The Canadian Dollar is terrible compared to both the US and UK.
For example, a 400' movie for 12 pounds is like saying the movie is 12 dollars UK, or 18 dollars US for the same thing...or worse $21 Canadian. This is without doubling the cost for shipping.
b) Shipping, which should be no more than 18$ for the first 400' reel, and drop to a couple dollars more for each additional reel. Many do not do this and capitalize on shipping and pocket the extra. I've been on ebay for over 15 years, trust me, this IS the case 85%+ of the time.
So my question is, is there anyone else here from Canada who would buy a 400' movie for $40 shipped?
I am not complaining. I am just mentioning why it may be that many of us cannot buy from you. This is unfortunate because we should all be able to enjoy the hobby in similar ways without having to move across the world to do so [Smile]
What is super attractive to myself as a buyer, are auctions where the seller mentions that he will COMBINE SHIPPING, which means, if someone can muster up enough money for the movie(s) they want, they may have half a change of actually obtaining them without first mortgaging their house [Smile]
Cheer,
Matt

Hi,Andrew. I was enquireing about a film that he has on his super8mm list, that was on the 11 Dec.,also on the 15 Dec., thank you for your interest. Regards Alex.

Presumably Matthew the exchange rate isn't the issue though here in Alex's case.Ian always ships his goods as cheap as possible.
Alex just needs a reply from Perry's to find out whether or not the film is still available. I speak with Ian fairly regularly and can usually get in touch with him one way or another, therefore I offered my help.

Which one was it Alex? So I can find out for you whether or not he has sold it?

Hi Alex, We all on the forum from time to time have to pay that little bit more to get what we want, unfortunately there is no compensation for where you live in the world as to where the item is that you want. What I can tell you is, that Ian is more than reasonable with is postage cost, and always very helpful. I have just received a film from Canada after 6 weeks wait, by land not air, so no import duty on receipt to me. Andrew has very kindly offered to help you this, if he's on the case you'll probably get it too, Andrew will also find out the condition the item is in, so its a win win situation. Good luck.

Sorry Alex, no offence intended, however with Andrew's offer to help with a call to him, will probably get you a quick answer. I did both when list went up, with a phone call and PM to him to clarify my wants. Once again good luck.

^^^Sorry if somehow my post above may have caused any confusion.
My comment was 'in general', and not to anyone in particular.
It was my viewpoint, not necessarily anyone else's. I was giving a comment on why it may be harder for us Canadians so far away to purchase what we want, and nothing against or toward Ian or his films. I buy from the UK sometimes as well. It just hurts the pocketbook more, and it is up to the seller as to whether he will ease that pain with shipping or not.
Cheers,
Matt

EDIT: Just to make the point, these are the films i would love to purchase:
1346 Way Out West – Laurel and Hardy – 2x800ft b/w snd £45
1404 Swiss Miss – Laurel and Hardy – 3x400ft b/w snd £35
1408 The Music Box – Laurel and Hardy – 400ft b/w snd £12
{{1433 Helpmates – Laurel and Hardy – 400ft b/w snd £14}}- Now own
1519 Men of War – Laurel and Hardy – 400ft b/w snd £12
1531 Tit for Tat – Laurel and Hardy – Plus Date to Skate – Popeye – 600ft b/w snd £14
1608 Beau Hunks – Laurel & Hardy 2x400ft b/w Sound £22

This order would cost me $282 Canadian, before shipping.....

Matthew, I won films on EBay UK about a month ago but the seller cancelled the sale as I am not living in the UK. He sent me an almost rude message and didn't answer when I asked him if there was any chance to buy the films as I was (it was clear from the beginning) ready to pay for the postage. So, it seems that we should consider ourselves Lucky when we can buy at all from foreign countries. I named UK as it happened recently but a similar (the rude message from the seller, less) happened once with EBay France and in 99 % of the time, the British sellers are wonderful.

Matthew, when I was in Toronto, I made a couple orders from Ian and he was willing to send my order via Royal Mail small parcel (untraceable). You know the risk here but for me nothing to worry...it is £5.10 for a 400' (eqv 400 grams) or around $CAD9.

Ian never marked up the postage, same case with Phil of CHC and Barry of Indie 8. And last but not least no my parcels have gone missing although they were sent by small packet service.

Cheers,
