Wondered if anyone has come across this as a feature on Super 8. I do know they released a very nice low fade print of the trailer which Derann used to sell many years ago on LPP stock.

It is very hard to find this on 16mm in any condition. But most prints even on 35mm would be a shade of pink by now thanks to it being filmed in Eastman Colour.

Fortunately i obtained an IB Tech print of this title recently.

If you ever track down a super 8 print of this,please let me know your source as this would be pretty much on top of my "wanted" list. I have got the trailer you mentioned, and a disjointed 1600' 16mm reel of it, but is only extracts and not in chronological order..... but better than nothing.

Would it be an idea to speak to Phil Sheard at Classic Home Cinema in Grimsby/Cleethorpes ? I know he has a super 8 and 16mm copy of A Hard Day's Night for sale at the moment so who knows?

With in all my years of collecting (40 odd years). I have never seen a copy on Super 8, even a bootleg or Italian print?

I have a friend who actual has a 35mm print from the recent re-release (Dolby Digital) of 2010. I also know British struck IB Tech prints of this are around on 16mm.

By any chance does your 1600ft disjointed reel come from Phil from CHC. I remember him playing that at one of the BFCC conventions. Colour was pretty faded but still watchable regardless.

With the Hard Days Night you speak of this came from a 35mm print that i have which was released by Miramax back in 2000 which is on polyester film stock.

Was Yellow Submarine ever released on Super 8 as a full feature, just a thought?

Doubtful, as I can't imagine the rights holders would ever give permission to distribute these films on Super 8.

If you get a copy of "Hard Days Night" on Super 8mm from CHC that they printed, it has an inherent flaw in that the bottom half of the screen is printed lighter/darker. I can't remember which one but it was a surprise. I found out they were all like this.

See now that's interesting, so a print that would cost you several hundred pounds is inherently flawed? That's the one aspect of film collecting I don't understand. I love film, but an inferior print cocked up at the lab stage just isn't worth the money in my opinion.

One of the main reasons why I've moved out of Super 8. Unless you're working from the actual negative. The quality will certainly vary in one form or another, colour balance, ratio, definition and don't forget the lab processing too.

Now if this came from the original negatives like the Derann Disney Super 8 feature releases of the 90s. I'd buy it with out question as you're getting the best quality that money can buy.

Yeah I couldn't understand why it was printed like that. I thought the print I purchased was a test print, a throw away, but it turned out that they were all like that. And it was selling for a few hundred quid! I returned it as I know that I would just keep staring at that part of the film no matter what else was going on in the frame.

It's film though Stuart. Inherent flaws are all part of it! ha ha.

Unless, as Robert points out here, the print comes from the very best negatives and labs available, just like the Disney / Derann contract, the quality varies all over the show with film, as I'm certain you're more than aware. [Smile]

Rob - bearing in mind the price I paid for the reel....it didn't come from that source!

Something tells me there ARE one or two copies of Yellow Submarine floating around (no pun intended). I seem to remember many moons ago seeing a copy at Ealing and the price at the time was well out of my reach. Keep your eyes open as one may surface sometime. (pun #2 not intended).

Sadly, Alan is right about the flaw in A Hard Day's Night on Super 8. I would argue it is the bottom 1/8th of the frame that is fractionally lighter than the rest, but still not a bad transfer, but not A1. Just a damn good film which IS A1 !

On the subject of HELP on super 8, several years ago ( 2003) I won an auction for a super 8 film consisting of extracts from the feature film. I still have it, it consists of songs and a bit of dialogue between. The songs are Help, You've got to hide your love away, Ticket to Ride and You're gonna lose that girl. It just fits on a 200ft reel. Picture quality is reasonable, a liitle grainy, sound is excellent. I assume it was a one off printing, definately not filmed off a tv screen. I paid about £50.
Also, from the same seller, scenes from Let It Be, almost 800 foot. I have split this up into a 400 foot reel of the rooftop concert, a 200 foot reel of Let it be and Long and Winding Road, and a 200 foot reel of what I have called studio sessions - which consists of the opening shots, rehearsal for Dont let me down, Two of us, Besame Mucho and Maxwells Silver Hammer, and then a performance of Two of us. Again, a bit grainy but certainly watchable. I paid £36 for this one.
I have never come across any other prints of these. Those were the days when you could buy decent stuff from Ebay!
Another prized possession won off ebay is a 200 foot reel of the Beatles Hollywood Bowl concert, super 8 sound, released by Encore Entertainments. If comprises shots of screaming fans and some long shots of the stage, followed by Twist and Shout and She Loves You filmed from the side of the stage by a lone cameraman on 16mm. That one cost me £32. Good picture and sound.

Well it's worth it for the price alone considering that title rarely comes up in any format.

I used to have an Eastman print of Yellow Submarine which i sold recently on 16mm. As i found an LPP print instead which is pretty rare to find these days.

I think at the end of the day anything on film is better then nothing.

I am actually working on a projector currently with Ron Howard in relation to The Beatles Live Project. I am lending some rare Beatles material from my archive. This would also be a good point for anyone who may have some rare original shot footage of the Beatles taken on 8mm to get in touch.

Melvin was correct! I saw a super 8 print on ebay of "Yellow Submarine" a number of years ago that went up sky-rocketing in price, but being that it already had some fade, i passed on it.
