Hi all,

Im looking for 8mm films of Elvis Presley on stage, filmed by fans from their seats at the show(s).
I was too young to ever see him, so films like this bring me great joy. Does anyone have anything like that?

Thanks!

Hello Jack and welcome to the forum.

I think you are being a little too optimistic in hoping that someone will let you have any rare film taken from the audience, assuming they managed to smuggle a camera into the auditorium in the first place, as this type of footage is not only extremely rare, but sells for vast amounts of money if it ever surfaces. My opinion is based on rare reels of Beatles footage that have surfaced from time to time. They have sold for "silly money."

However, there is "official" concert footage of Elvis available on super 8. I have a copy of "Aloha From Hawaii" myself. Both "The 1968 Comeback Special" and his appearance on the Jerry Dorsey show are also available as is, I believe, "That's The Way It Is." There is also grainy footage of his wedding and a press conference, not to mention a LOT of his full length feature films.

Quite a bit for you to be going on with.

Good luck in your search!

.

Hi all

as a big Elvis fan I completely agree with Melvin - no-one will give up thier 8mm footage of Elvis concerts..and I would have thought you would have known this.

Actually lots of concerts - or partial concerts were filmed on 8mm as you must be aware if you have gone on You Tube there is a load on there.

Melvin, Mark...

Thank you both for your replies. Of course, I'm not naive enough to think one would just hand over films like this. As the saying goes, "this ain't my first rodeo" [Smile]
I'm aware of what reels like that go for, but as a fan and collector of said items, I wanted to put a call out on this forum... leave no stone unturned, if you will.

Peace!
Jack

Jack - There certainly is such footage 'out there'; you'll have considerable difficulty finding it, but that won't surprise you!

At a particular Derann Open Day I attended - I think in the 1990s - a whole succession of Elvis shorts were offered in the auction, roughly around 200-300 foot each. They were identified in terms of specific performances. Starting prices were modest but I suspect we were baffled by what we were seeing as none were known Elvis Super 8 releases. I don't think any of them sold except one that I bought because I was curious to gain some idea of what they were.

When I watched the (colour/sound) film, it was clearly non-professional Super 8 footage shot from the audience; not a camera original but copied to produce a very basic release, featuring incomplete songs and an added live track that wasn't perfectly in sync. There were no splices in the print. It wasn't great but watchable and something of a curio. I still have it somewhere, so if I find it, I'll see what it says on the box.

It's loo long ago for me to be able to recall much else, but I think I was told or gained the impression that the films offered had been made available via an Elvis fan club. I wish I'd bought a few more at the time!

I bought a 16 mm film at a film fair (in France) mostly because it had a magnetic soundtrack, which is not current. The label on the box said "Tournage d'un film ("Shooting Of A Movie"). Costed me 15 or 20 €. It turned to be unique interviews of famous French actors by someone who had access to them in a studio with his 16mm sound recording camera. Sure the seller had not watched this valuable film. I heard of a lady who bought at a flea market a super 8 sound film with a famous French singer at the beach. Although the seller knew what it was, it was sold to the lady for...5 €. So you never know.

Adrian, if you do find it, I'd love to know what's on it. Probably footage that's long-been circulated, but one never knows!

And Dominque, yes, once in a while you'll stumble upon a great find because the seller either doesn't know what they've got, or doesn't place much value on it personally. I've gotten lucky once or twice where I scored a reel at a great deal, so it does happen.
