From Russia With Love (1963) Produced by: Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli. Directed by: Terence Young.
The Second Film in The James Bond Series, Sean Connery returns as MI6 Special Agent James Bond. He is sent to Turkey to aid in the defection of a Soviet consulate clerk who is offering up a Russian Cypher machine in return. The whole situation is actually a SPECTRE trap: a revenge plot against MI6 and Bond himself, for eliminating Dr. No.
This Print arrived mounted on 7 X 400' reels, Poly Low Fade film stock and mine came with a main Magnetic track. Each Print From Steve @ The Reel Image seem to get better and better! the Picture Quality is Outstanding, the Color simply Gorgeous, Contrast is Outstanding and the Image is Razor Sharp!
The Sound Quality is Excellent, Approaching Hi-Fi acoustics. A Very well recorded track!
This print is a winner and comes highly recommended to any Bond / Connery fan.

Enjoy:)

WOW!!!!! I had an airline optical sound print of this Bond feature, and it had turned a vicious red. I understand Cubby Broccoli insisted that any Bond title used for airlines must be on quick fade stock to stop the prints getting into the hands of collectors?!?!

A beautiful print of a classic film!! [Smile]

Burton,
great print!
Does Your 007 have german titles and credits?
One funny fact: You can read at the end that the song
should have been sung by Ruth Berle („Die Wolga ist weit“).
But the song has never been used for the german movies.
Regards
Oliver

Oliver, on this print the main title is "Liebesgrusse Aus Moskau", but the rest of the credits are in English. The Text at the end of the film announcing "Bond will Return in Goldfinger" is also in German.

Lovely. Was this original in cinemascope, or is this the original aspect ratio?

Posted by Burton Sundquist (Member # 5813) on January 12, 2019, 11:18 PM:

The first Bond shot in Panavision was Thunderball. ( 2.35 : 1 ) Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger were 1.37 : 1( Negative Ratio ), 1.66 : 1 ( Intended Ratio, Europe ) and 1.85 : 1 ( Intended Ratio, USA ) I Believe Super 8 aperature produces a 1.34 : 1 Ratio so it's pretty close to the negative aspect ratio of the original film.

The print is really nice and sharp! I have to ask what would a print like this cost! Do I have to HIT the Lottery? It is Great to have a brand new print in our Hobby! But its the price that holds some of us back! Again its a super print! Enjoy!

Posted by Burton Sundquist (Member # 5813) on January 14, 2019, 12:45 AM:

Luis you are correct. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is a great Bond film. Especially with the Anamorphic presentation. My point is that the first three were not Panavision, or Cinemascope. Leon, no I didn't win the lottery I just wanted this print. Well worth it.

Looks wonderful Burton.

Diamonds are forever is another fave of mine

Beautiful colors, and the deep contrasts are some of the best I've seen on super 8. There's something about the rich look of real film that just can't be duplicated, in my opinion. As Leon said, its just that $$$ that holds us back sometimes.

Thank you Burton for the fantastic review and beautiful frames as well.

James

Thanks Lee, Diamonds is a favorite of mine too. Jill St. John is stunning. And Thanks James. This print took some time to arrive as the lab had to adjust for the new film stock. Well worth the wait though! $$$ is a factor but for the last couple of years rather than save up for fancy Holiday I have stayed local, and put the savings toward some Super 8 Gems like this.

Does anyone have, or has seen the First Blood feature.

Now that would be one to own, as you can run it every weekend if you have a mind too.

Be nice if JP ends up looking like that print Burton.

Best Mark.

Absolutely superb for Super 8mm.

I have more or less given up collecting Super 8mm films but seeing the screenshots for this one am sorely tempted to purchase a copy as it is my all time favourite Sean Connery Bond film.

I agree with everyone, the print quality is one of the best. Looks like 35mm. This is def one to add to the collection.

Am i correct in assuming that the soundtrack is presented in it's original MONO mode ?

If yes that is fine by me. [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

NICE! Screen Shots! Keep them coming Burt!

Congratulations to Burton; what a great print. The screenshots could easily be mistaken for an excellent 16mm copy! It's also encouraging to see the quality control evident here, as I can easily remember the days when I'd think the chances of getting seven reels without a single fault were low.

As for the price, I'm sure that anyone interested in obtaining a copy can check this with The Reel Image!

Yes David, It is Masterfully re-mixed Digital Mono Sound. Very good dynamic range. It includes the acoustic theme music after the end credits. Terry it would be best to contact Steve @ The Reel Image for pricing information.

Thanks for letting me know about the MONO sound mix Burton. I am a big fan of original mono soundtracks and like to hear the film in same the way in which i first saw the movie on it's original cinema release. I have never been a big fan of Stereo sound .

The last time I enquired about this print from Steve at reel image in 2017 the price was $1100 with a $300 deposit for this beautiful print. It may be a different price now, but judging by the comments here of how good it is, I doubt whether it will effect the sale much, certainly one of the best prints I have seen, give the age of the film and masters used, a really excellent advert for all concerned.

Well done Paul for 'putting your head above the parapet '. I don't understand why others were so coy about revealing the general estimate of price. Actually I think that the price is not overly expensive for such a beautiful print of a very desirable feature. Probably a good investment. I do wonder however, what postage and customs/import duties would add to that price.

I asked the very same question Terry to Steve, and lets put it this way, he sprinkled some special dust on the "value ", so at the time I was to purchase a copy, just the postage to find, and I believe he does this at cost. He's one of the good guys for sure, very good service from him . I don't understand the coy ness either Terry, you were not asking for his credit card pin number, just a price......

Regarding the cost of high price items, I can understand a reluctance to refer to this, because it has occasionally been known in the past on internet forums for there to be extremely harsh comment regarding the cost of collecting Super 8 features, and thus the judgement of those who buy them when they are brand new.

I'm NOT referring to this forum and I'm sure such attacks wouldn't be tolerated here. And it's hopefully better appreciated now that quality prints produced in low numbers will hold much if not all of their value.

And although it's of course fair enough to only buy used films at relatively modest prices, I'd say the hobby owes some debt to collectors who do buy new releases, because without them, there would never be any used prints on the market!

Well I guess there will always be small minded people with a jealous inclination, but thankfully we don't see much of it on here and as you say Adrian, it would not be tolerated, thanks to our moderators.

Anyone paying this amount for a feature print should expect to be thrilled with the quality as soon as they start screening it. By all accounts Burton is elated with all aspects of his print and is thus very happy with this purchase. [Smile]
