There has been posting recently about this issue so I have spoken to my service engineer for clarification of what models of the TQIII range are suitable for video transfer.

Let's start with those which are not. Projectors which have synchronous AC motors whose speed are controlled by the mains frequency are not suitable, these are the 15xx and the 25xx series.

The 16xx series have a DC motor whose speed is controlled by potentiometers, usually referred to as pots, these are variable resistors and the 16xx series have two pots, one for 24 and one for 18. The speed is changed by a sliding switch on the rear near the mains input plug. The pots have a very large range of probably 5fps to 40fps.

However, even if the speed can match the speed of the taken film there may be flicker as these models have a two bladed shutter, even at 18fs there is a slight flicker. This can only really be cured by fitting a three-blade shutter.

The models suitable are:- 1680. 1692, 1693, 1694, 1695, and 1698.

My engineer has developed his own external variable speed control for these models which just plugs into a new socket fitted on the projector. This has been supplied to various organisations, such as archives, who wish to transfer old films. It is usual when the work is being done to fit a new 3-blade shutter.

If any member is seriously considering transfer work on a long time basis and wants details, please send me a PM and I will give you details of my engineer.
