I have Super 8 and Std. 8mm CIR splicers and I finally found a 16mm model for under $300 and grabbed it. As a bonus it came with about 7 rolls of tape too. The Elmo 16CL projector I use most often is a bit fussy with splices...but seems to do very well with the CIR tape splices opposed to cement or presstapes. Now to find a 9.5mm model at a reasonable price [Smile]

That could be a little more challenging, unless you get very lucky.

Absolutely Terry...I'm not holding my breath. I'd be happy with any 9.5 splicer at this point.

Janice
9.5 CIR second hand are very rare. You might have to do what I did and buy new from CIR in Italy.
However, you could use a cement splicer such as the Marguet tri-film from France which is for 8mm, 9.5mm, and 16mm.
Good ones are not cheap, but here is a splendid looking one from Australia.

Beware, some listed on eBay are without their scraper.

Maurice...Do you happen to know how much the CIR 9.5 splicers go for? I didn't see any pricing on their site.

...also, Do you think it's possible to use tape with the cement splicer?

The CIR splicers for 16mm are well worth the investment,I bought mine off a fellow film collector here in New Zealand about 8 years ago and paid approx NZ$300.
It's so easy to use and really quick to get the job done :-)
I will watch with interest on how you get on getting a 9.5mm CIR splicer :-)

Thanks Terry, Maurice, and Clinton. Just like looking for a particular film to add to your collection...we can also look for peripheral accessories to help in this hobby. I'll keep looking for a 9.5 splicing solution [Smile]

@ David... I'm not quite sure why you felt the need to make such a negative comment. What was your point? [Confused] I'm very happy with what I bought and the price I paid. It will save me lots of time and make much better splices. Like others on this forum it's fun to share our excitement of new film related purchases...but comments like yours kind of take the fun out of it.

Janice

The Invoice from C.I.R. SRL was for 268.46 EURO. The cost of the 9.5 Pathe Film Splicer (Commodity Code 90105000) was 193 EURO. The remaining cost was postage and IVA (VAT).
This was in February 2015.

As regards using tape with a cement splicer. Not really practicable because of the need to perforate the tape, although I suppose the join could be made mid-frame, thus avoiding the perfs.

Thanks for the pricing info Maurice. Buying one directly from CIR may be the way to go. However, I just don't know if I would use a 9.5 splicer enough to justify the expense...just have to think about it.

Right now I'm using what Pathe' called a splicer...but it's barely that [Smile] I cut the film with one of my CIR splicers then tape down the curled film from my Pathe' Baby cartridges into the little splicer film path. I put a piece of tape on one side and lower the clamp. I then do the same to the other side. I then trim the tape that extends over the film width with a razor blade. The splicer will not punch a hole so I have to cut it out with an exacto blade. My guess is that this splicer was made to use with cement...but it's near impossible to get the old film to lay flat so cementing would be even more difficult.

Hi Janice, I found the CIR 9.5 mm on ebay, It is not mine.

Thank you Alessandro. It looks like a beauty. At $402 plus shipping it's a little to expensive for my budget. However I appreciate you looking out for me. It's nice to have some other eyes out there to help in the search [Smile]

I do what you do Janice when using tape to join 9.5mm film, but I make my perforation hole using a tiny screwdriver,I heat the end using a candle and lightly make a tiny hole in the tape.
It works great, may not look pretty but that's ok :-)

That's an interesting technique Clinton. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to try it. Making the hole is the most tedious and time consuming part and believe me the holes I cut with the exacto blade don't look that good either. I've thought about some how modifying a hand paper punch to make the 9.5 hole, but haven't quite figured out how to do it yet.

The Pathescope Film Mender was an accessory for the Pathe Baby projector. The actual joins were made with perforated film patches. The simple latch being used to clamp the film being spliced.

Note: I've changed the title of this thread since it's branched out from the 16mm CIR splicer I bought...to some interesting information on various 9.5mm splicing alternatives.

Maurice here is what I found in my Pathe' Baby docs. The picture below looks like a better Film Mender than what I have... with clamps to hold down the film. The instructions say to strictly use a special film cement called Patheine and that other film cements wouldn't work. I wonder what was different about this cement compared to what we use on 8 and 16mm film.

I have two of these and you are welcome to one for just the cost of postage. It may be more useful until you eventually find a 9.5 CIR. The problem is the cheapest rate I can find is £10 Royal Mail which is more than it is worth. Do you know of a cheaper way?

I absolutely agree with David Baker. You are truly inspirational and a credit to the forum and I love to see the great projects you take on. Keep up the good work [Smile]

Hi Janice, The 9.5mm CIR splicers were always very much more expensive than the ones for the other gauges, hence the rarity. Cement ones being readily available much more cheaply. The best ones were the Marguet (French) and Ensign Universal(English) Tri gauge 8/16/9.5mm Not super8,splicers. The Pathescope ones were not very good and wore out quickly. The ones you illustrated were designed for use with sprocket hole repair patches. This is based on my70 odd years experience as a 9.5mm "Cinemaniac"!!! I do have a CIR 9.5mm splicer which I was fortunate to pick up from a "Junk shop" many years ago for about £50. This was about 30% of the price of a new one at that time. Ken Finch.

@Terry... Sounds good... I'll PM you. My son just traveled from London to Edinburgh today. To bad he wasn't heading south...he could have picked it up [Smile]

@Ken...Thank you for adding your experience and knowledge to this thread. The history and implimentation of these parts is so interesting and needs to be shared. [Smile]

There is an article (in French) in the latest edition of the magazine published by the Ciné Club 9.5 de France explaining how to convert a 16 mm hanel splicer to 9.5 [Smile]

How could I see that article Dom?

It is not online, Janice. The magazine is printed only. I can send you a scan if you like. But I realized that the Hahnel used to be converted to 9.5 splicer is not a 16 mm but a 8/super 8 one.

Heat the end of a tiny screwdriver with a flat end the same size as a 9.5mm perforation ...

 -

Gently push it through the tape just enough to create a hole,it may not look pretty but it works well for me ...

Hi Janice. Grahame Newnham has various 9.5mm cement splicers for sale, including the Marguet, which as Ken says is the best of the cement ones. He won't ship internationally, but if you wanted one from him, get him to send it to me, and I can ship it on to you.

http://www.pathefilm.uk/lists/filmlista.htm

It's best to phone him, he gets swamped with emails.

I used a Marguet for years before finally blowing about £200 on a CIR one, which is worth its weight in gold.

I work as a film editor, and years ago saved a pile of 16mm and 35mm ones from going in the skip, which I then gave on to other collectors.

Here is a link to Grahame's Sales List. The Marguet tri-film cement splicer is £18 GBP.
However, as mentioned by Chris, Grahame does not deal with any overseas sales so I am not sure how payment can be made from the US. Perhaps Chris may also be able to assist.

@ Clinton...thanks for the pics. It definitely looks easy enough. The hole you burn appears not to be as large as the original hole. Any problems with the claw not pulling down properly?

@Chris and Maurice...Thanks guys for the link to Grahame's page. It will help me make a decision [Smile]

It works 99% of the time otherwise I do the join again,I guess the hole is close enough to original to work on my Specto.
It's possible it's not as forgiving on another projector?
It really is a case of trial and error and adapting the tools we have to work with [Smile]

Janssen Film's price for the 9.5mm CIR is 265 EUROS. Plus tax and postage.
The one I bought direct from CIR in Italy was 193 EUROS, (plus tax and postage) although I admit that was over two years ago.

I received from Terry Sills today...two 9.5 splicers. These will definitely do the job for me.... and for now I'm not actively looking for a CIR.

Thank you Terry and my 9.5 films in need of repair thank you also [Smile]

Wondering how this item slipped out of everyone's radar?

Still 3 days to go,which I'm quite sure thatit would end up at skyrocketed price. [Embarrassed]

(sorry for the link, tried to insert URL but it turned out garbled)
