Hello all,
Can anyone help please?
I am looking to purchase as cheaply as possible, a 16mm splicer.
I fully understand he decent ones are CRI and the likes, but i am on a budget and the amount of use it would have for us would not justify anything expensive.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Tom...on a budget Kodak presstapes are your best choice. I just splurged and bought a Cir 16mm splicer for $260. Up until now I have been using presstapes with various splicers. Here are pics of splicers I've used:

1) Kodak Universal Presstape Splicer (8, Super8, and 16mm) ... 2) Craig Master Six (this is a great splicer for 8, Super8, ... and 16mm)... - wish it did 9.mm 3) Baia (8mm & 16mm...and believe it or not...this is my favorite. Cheap...easy to use...and frame-line accurate.

Janice, i think that is the sort of thing i need, I also do use a very cheap one for my super 8s and like you, it so easy to use and gives me perfect results every time. I also cut me 4 frame 8mm tapes into two so they go twice as far and hold fine so with only two frames covered you hardly notice them.

One like the Baia would be handy as a small one to take to shows, just in case an 'emergency' repair was needed.

Janice - I noticed that in your photo, the blade of the Baia doesn't appear to go into a slot, but it presumably still makes a clean cut? But doesn't the pressure cause the blade to become blunt?

Adrian...sure eventually the little razor blade will become dull. Even the Kodak Universal splicer doesn't have a cutting slot and those blades stay sharp for a very long time. Even though I've made hundreds of splices with my current little Baia it's still very sharp. Makes a nice clean cut. I did have a previous one where the blade actually broke...but that was after 2 years of heavy usage. I've been able to pick the Baia up for $9-$10 on Ebay and feel it's a bargain.

Another reason I like this little splicer is that it only has 1 set of pins. Most others have top and bottom pins which is fine for silent film...but single sprocket film won't lie flat.

Janice - thanks for the information- I'll keep a look out. It should be one of the few things I could but from the USA without risk of a customs charge!

Could someone please advise if every model of the Kodak Universal Splicer makes those strange cuts that don't go straight along the frame line? I've always thought splices should be as unobtrusive as possible, so I've never understood the rationale for a splice that causes you to see parts of two different frames at the same time!
