Which is the better projector for a newbie like me. I can probably get either for around $35.00. Is that a decent price.?. What are the known problems with these models if any?
Thanks for any info.

Luis, sorry but ive never heard of a Chinon 'Whisper'. I personally would always go for a Eumig over a Chinon anyday.

Ditto as well on that. The Chinon "whispers", while very quiet, are not too friendly to film and you could end up with a number of eaten films if you go with the Chinon.

Well the Chinon sold for $100.00 with 18 bids and the Eumig went for $49.00 with 4 bids. I was wondering why the Chinon sold for twice as much and with 4 times the interest compared to the Eumig if the Eumig is such a better machine?

Luis ...

Its a matter of modern opinion, but people tend to think, (as a general rule) that because a projector has more bells or whistles, (for instance, the Chinon 9500 still doesn't look dated to this day, with a more modern looking body) on the outside, that it is going to get more looks from customers.

" Duh ... it is brighter and prettier, so it must be better ... DUH! "

(visualize the drool rolling down the chin.)

Its kind of like what I noted with audio technology. I have always went with Realistic brand. They don't have lots of visual splendor to thier units. They are, quite frankly, very bland in appearance ...

... but they're ...

A. Audio quality and ,
B. built to last

No matter how many graphic equalizers and other lit up LED displays that other lower price brands have, I'll still stick with the boring looking Realistic.

The same is true with the Eumig. While some of the later models had more bells and whistles, the EUMIG was a rather bland looking body, not very "sexy" in appearance, but boy, do they perform, and are hard to kill. Eumigs are much more gentle on your films as well, (as I mentioned earlier.)

The weak points of the later Eumig:

Motor bearings (plain bearings). Not accessible, therefore no possibility for lubrication. One day they run dry and then no more go.

Motor swivel point bearings. Decay. Will have to be replaced by such of a more stable material.

Plastic bridge between drive unit and shuttle unit. Shrinks slowly which will more and more cinch on the shafts. Should be replaced by a metal one that stays a little loose.

The four plain bearings in the mechanism can be oiled from time to time after removal of the housing back.

An Eumig updated in this sense will run away with 26 or more fps. The speed may be adjusted by shifting the drive wheel stop. I have a Mark S with ball motor bearings and aluminium bridge. One good machine!
