Small world Pat...I worked at the Balboa and at the Coliseum Theater on Clement Street in San Francisco in the late 1960's. The Balboa, Coliseum, and the Alexandria on Geary Street were all owned by the same person and I often had to fill-in at the different theaters. Great memories!

Many of the old cinemas or in your part of the world movie theatres/theaters are really beautiful looking buildings, and inside you can really see where the name 'Picture Palaces' comes from.

The old Ritz/ABC in my local town was a nice looking cinema, gone for supermarket, also gone to be replaced with a supermarket crazy.

We are still lucky to have a local videma.

Does America have a listed building system? When they are listed Grade 1or 2 you cannot make alterations to them or knock them down.

Or like in Las Vegas just blow them up.

We do have a "building system" so to speak. Each state or town has building codes based on the area. We also have a Historical Society whose job it is to preserve old buildings buy dictating what can or can't be done to then at the time of re-modeling. Unfortunately it didn't work well in the town I live it when and old "Bristol Cinema" closed. It was torn down and and addition was added to the elementary school right next door with the empty lot. Unfortunately politics (and money)enters into everything.

That must be a very thorough list. I entered my town, Bothell, Washington, and it came up with the Avon Theater. This theater has not been in business for decades. It was moved a few blocks down the road to make way for a Grocery store in 1962. It later became a car dealership. The building was just demolished last year to make way for road improvements. Even the Grocery store that took it's place is getting ready to be demolished to make way for new construction.

It is very thorough. There's a reference to a theater on an island I like to spend weekends on that is so obscure and has been gone so long that nobody is even sure where it was.

Janice, what job(s) did you have at these theaters?

Steve...nothing as exciting as being a projectionist. I just worked at the theaters while going to college and still living at home. I worked the candy counter and eventually promoted to cashier... $1.75/hr....the big time [Smile]

An old friend had the job title of "assistant projectionist" when we were seniors in High School. It sounded great to me except Jim's major job was hauling the movies up to the booth. He said the cases weighed about seventy pounds each and being a typical 17 year old technology major he wasn't very much more than that himself!

(Where's the football team when they're really needed?)

Sad to say...but in the couple years I worked in the theaters...I never was curious enough to venture into the projection booth. I regret that now. I think at the time I was more interested in flirting with the ushers [Wink]
