July seems to be the month in which bookings suddenly take off for the the SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER, so I'm just letting everyone know that although there's absolutely no rush to book, I now have quite a few names on the list. The dinner will of course have all the usual ingredients: three course meal featuring the Hilton's fine cuisine; the movie quiz; the now famous raffle including new Super 8 and 16mm items; and the film show to round off the evening. The good news is that the Hilton have not raised their prices, so we can maintain the (cost) price of only £20. If you're staying at the Hilton with the special Film Fair deal, you can transfer your Saturday night dinner to the Film Collectors' Dinner at no extra charge, so long as you let me know.

If you're planning to stay at the Hilton, it may be wise to speak to Julie Vincent there soon, because one of the latest people booking told me that she said there are not many discounted Film Fair rooms left.

good news for blackpool I am almost booked up now those who have paid deposit for a stall should have now paid in full by the 1sr of july , if not they could be disappointed as new dealers are wanting tables also ring Julie Vincent for accommodation these are now going fast

Just a reminder that anyone travelling to Blackpool by train should ideally book soon as some of the lowest advance fares won't be available for much longer. I managed the return trip - East Croydon to Blackpool North - for £40, but you get a better deal by changing at Birmingham New Steet!

Please also note that someone who recently booked for the Dinner was told by Julie Vincent that he had obtained the last discounted single room at the Hilton, so anyone needing a single should now probably opt for one of the popular alternatives liked by film collectors.

I've just seen the programme for the Friday evening show and it looks very entertaining. It will feature presentations from Lee Mannering, Mark Norton and Simon McConway, showing some of their favourite shorts using different 8/16mm projectors. There will even be a rare 1980s Elf/Eiki film promoting their projectors! So there's every incentive to treat yourself to an enjoyable break, ideally arriving by Friday evening and leaving on Monday.

I echo Paul's wise words. Don't forget Friday night, around 8pm, in The Hilton, we will be testing out our projectors in the cinema. As well as 8mm, we will use 16mm projectors with updated HID lighting and a film from Elf themselves, showing all the different models.

With the attractions extending from Friday evening to the end of Sunday afternoon (with sightseeing time on Saturday) it should be an outstanding weekend!

I currently have 57 bookings for the Saturday dinner, which is a record for the post-Derann era! Some people are making their first visit to Blackpool for many years, but have been drawn back by the weekend's growing reputation. I'm due to give the Hilton a more or less final number next Monday, so please let me know by Sunday if you would still like to book. It's only £20 for guests not staying at the Hilton, which is cost price and a bargain for an evening that includes a delicious three course meal; a Super 8 film show presented by David Watson using an ultra-rare Fumeo; a quiz and the extraordinary raffle.

To both David :-) You're fantastic people ! My first coach from Brussels is supposed to arrive in London at 5.45 am (on Saturday). Then the coach to Blackpool leaves (from the same station, Victoria) at 8 am. So, there are only two hours between both coaches. If I'm Lucky and there is no delay, I should be able to catch the 8 am coach and then arrive in Blackpool in the afternoon (in theory at 2.20 pm (same day of course, Saturday). In this case, I would be able to come (probably exhausted) to the dinner. I really appreciate your messages !

thats a really great gesture from David Watson. Dominique you are without doubt a dedicated collector. as i stated on another forum there are some who live only miles away and yet give every excuse as to why they cannot attend. so well done Dominique you are an inspiration.

Posted by David Guest (Member # 2791) on November 10, 2016, 03:42 AM:

yes paul that is quite true I know one guy that only lives 3 miles away but fails to attend I am totally distgusted when events like this are on but fail to attend ,and they are the first ones to moan when they stop .I cant wait to see if it was ealings last one as they will be first to moan and don't even go we will see

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on November 10, 2016, 04:26 AM:

If you don't attend these things nowadays, I don't personally see how any of these guys have the right to moan once they've gone.

I presume the Ealing event will only have closed its doors for last time because Keith is feeling the pressure from doing it still, both bodily and to his wallet.

I know Keith says it was costing him personally to finance the whole event in the end. I am sure he wouldn't want to put all that effort into it, only to run it at a loss in these times.

Hopefully, this wasn't the case for Keith this year, as I know numbers were said to be up on recent times.

A younger Keith and just a little more interest in the hobby as a whole, then who knows?
Maybe it could have gone on for much much longer.

Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on November 10, 2016, 05:09 AM:

will you be sad to see any of them go Andrew. you being someone who never attends.

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on November 10, 2016, 05:19 AM:

Yes of course Paul.

It serves superbly for those who attend the Ealing event and I've watched countless footage from the BFCC/ Derann dvd's of these events over the years, and enjoyed every single minute of them.

Like all good things in life, one day it has to end though sadly. This in part is probably because there is hardly any new film products to promote or for the next generation of film collectors to buy. The older better stuff becomes more scarce by the year and therefore the attendance at the afore mentioned Ealing event had sadly dwindled over the years.

Whatever happens regarding this event in the future, it has given many collectors a great deal of pleasure and entertainment and as such, has left an eternal legacy of fond memories etched in people's minds from all across the globe.

To all event organizers, past and present, you should be saluted for the pleasure you have brought to many many collectors the entire world over.

Posted by Simon McConway (Member # 219) on November 10, 2016, 07:33 AM:

Only one collector we know of has a genuine excuse not to go; his daughter is getting married outside of the UK the weekend of Blackpool. The other collectors who say "we always go shopping that day" or "my wife won't be happy" will miss out on another stunning event at Blackpool. Those who are gripped around the throat due to their love of money and cannot bring themselves to spend any...I am sure that money languishing in your pocket will bring you nowhere near the pleasure we will all be having in Blackpool.

Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on November 10, 2016, 08:06 AM:

you know Simon i actually feel sorry for those that cannot go.and i feel if we all had Andrews outlook ie enjoying the video and dvd of events instead of actually supporting such things. then there would be no dvds or video to see, because no one would have gone in the first place. looking forward to seeing you next friday Simon.

Posted by David Guest (Member # 2791) on November 10, 2016, 08:08 AM:

anyone who misses this event will be sick I have plenty bargains to be had and a few surprises keep buying of ebay where you cant see properly what you are buying where as blackpool the dealers are always more to screen any film you are interested before money changes hands not like ebay well spoken simon see you and paul and mark for a drink on Friday night on me

we must all support Blackpool it would be unthinkable to lose it.the best weekend of the year in my book.those who think there hobby is dead are killing it

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on November 10, 2016, 10:09 AM:

I have no merit to attend film conventions. It is always a great pleasure and I have never been deceived by any. Even in small events (like some in Belgium), it is always nice to see other collectors. The conventions in the UK give me not only the opportunity to see (and buy) items I see seldom (or never) on the continent but also to meet British people, they have, once again showed on this thread how sweet people they are :-)

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on November 10, 2016, 10:22 AM:

You're right of course Dominique regarding many of our collectors. Hats off to both David's here in volunteering to take great care of you my friend whilst you are at Blackpool!

In reply to Paul's earlier comments, the DVD's I have purchased over time, are of a completely different era than today.
These relive the era when Derek and his team, as well as other dealers such as Ian of Perry's used to be in attendance and Derann used to be selling their latest new feature releases there.

These are the types of films I collect now, as you know, therefore it is these events from a bygone era that capture my most interest while this stuff was all still brand new out on my one and only prefered gauge, Super 8mm.

just not getting it are you Andrew. look at Cinesea event. what a fabulous time is had by all who make the effort and go there. no Derann, no Perrys, NO NEW PRODUCT. but films a plenty in 8mm and 16mm. getting together with like minded people. Blackpool as an event is as good as it ever was.and in a hotel that would be hard to beat. no, no new product , but again films a plenty. and the chance to enjoy other collectors company. lets just see what Dominique thinks of it all after his visit. so so sad Andrew that you see it as you do. but hey you will be waiting for the pictures on here i guess.

Can you imagine what it would be like to be a film collector these days without the internet?

It would be very easy to fool yourself into thinking you were the last one on the planet: there might be another one half a mile away, you might even sit down next to him (or her) a couple of times a week when you get a cup of coffee on the way to work, but you might never find out.

It's not the kind of thing you just blurt out to strangers really: "Please, pass the sugar?" "Why YES! I collect films!"

At least with the Internet, we know there are other people who do this, but the next step is definitely the conventions. When you meet and get to know people, you make connections. When I need help, I know people I can ask. Even when I don't need help, I have people sending me links saying "I bet you'd like this!".

-wouldn't have happened if I never got to know them.

One of the things I love about the Conventions is definitely the film shows. Every film I have, I've seen a bunch of times. If there's printing mark or a splice, I know the millisecond it will appear. The film shows are a chance to see films and even entire genres you've never seen before. You might go home liking a whole new thing!

Posted by John Armer (Member # 4655) on November 10, 2016, 12:16 PM:

I agree, Steve about the film shows. The first Ealing convention I went to was a couple of years ago, and I thought the film shows were brilliant. You got to see Super 8 projected on a HUGE scale, with decent projectors, and I saw digests, cartoons and films that I'd never seen before but impressed me greatly. I've now got the Derann cut down of Capricorn One and just last week was able to pick up the Hovercraft Sequence from Die Another Day, both of which were showcased at that first Ealing event that I went to - I loved them!

One of the highlights of Blackpool for me will be the film show on the Saturday night, and - hopefully he will be doing it - Bob Nichols' film shows on the Sunday.

From what I see and read Nigel, those that attend, tend to nearly always attend. So I doubt there is any risk of "losing it" whilever the organizers want to continue organizing these events.

As said, numbers were up this year at Ealing and the dinner at Blackpool is said to be the best supported since the Derann era.

All good by the looks of things, irrespective of who doesn't attend for whatever reasons. [Smile]

To Steve and then Paul also here just earlier...as I've explained to David, Paul and just about anyone else here on many many occasions,..
I do thankfully get to meet some of the people I speak with on the forums, the ones which are geographically too far away, I converse with regularly through social media, forums etc.
and if they need my help in any way, I do my best to help them.
Many have helped me also remotely, without even actually meeting these lovely people in person.

As Steve points out above, we live in an era now when we can communicate with anyone in the world at any time of the day or month of the year without leaving the comfort of our own homes.

The need to actually travel to share conversations surrounding the hobby, are well behind us now in this era.

I collect only Super 8mm film and equipment and even then, only a certain era of films nowadays. I have all the equipment I could ever had dreamed of owning just a few years back, already.
So on that front now, I seek nothing new anymore.
I have no particular interest in 16mm or 9.5mm or 35mm /70mm films or equipment.

I get all that I seek from the hobby, just the way things are thanks. [Smile] [Wink]

i find it very sad Andrew that you only converse with people in the hobby via the internet, when there are times you could join and meet up at the film fairs with fellow collectors at places within your area. no great travel to do. but thats your choice of course. lets face it a lot of your time is spent in front of a computer as both forums can see. you obviously dont feel you are missing anything, so i will leave it at that. just a shame ,thats all.

I'm perfectly content thanks, and wish you all well at the forthcoming convention. [Smile]

Over the years I always wanted to attend the Ealing convention, just a bit far away [Frown] ....anyway with the magic of the internet with "Facebook", "Vimeo" and You-tube, its been brilliant link to see what others get up to. Global Super 8 day Facebook for example, has some very interesting stuff on it and with "auto translate" it opens up a whole new world with other non English speaking film making/collectors, some of which are really into Super 8 big time. [Cool] [Smile]

Another advantage is that although you might never meet them due to distance, its obvious when you look at the videos and stills, we are very much on the same wave length when it comes to films and projectors. [Smile] ....some very clever people out there folks.

If I ever get to New Zealand, I'd love to drop by your place for a tour, a film and a beer, Graham!

I'm buying! (...the beer!)

Of course I'd like to have you drop by my "theater" too. I'm afraid there isn't as much to see.

-we have a platter system...it's for serving meat!

A platter system for serving meat would be just fine [Smile]

A long story with a point

When I started collecting film back in the late 1970s there were shops selling super 8 films and dealers but after the video boom I would say you felt you were a minority of one with only newsletters and lists convincing you that the were like minded collectors or maniacs out there in the universe. The "Damascus" moment came when a collector called Adrian asked Derek Simmonds was there any other collectors in Northern Ireland apart from him and Derek said aye loads and somehow from that conversation Adrian got the mailing addresses of all the other collectors who regularly bought from Derann (no data protection in those days) and wrote a letter to all of us introducing himself explaining his interest in Super 8 and inviting us to meet at a local movie making club about having film collecting discussion or shows etc You can imagine when I got the letter from somebody I had never heard of I had visions of some bug eyed loon in a rain coat but after reading it two or three time thought he sounded normal and gave him a call to meet at the next film makers meeting. After that Adrian decided to get the flu and not turn up but I went and met fellow recipients of Adrian's letter. Eventually he did turn up and a new world of home cinemas and people actually having full features opened up to me.

Anyway out of the Adrian letter around 2/3 of the letter recipients formed the NI Film Collectors Club. The other third the Howard Hughes are still living behind closed doors as far as we know.

The result of this was mini conventions in different home cinemas roughly every two to three months, informal film nights where you actually got to see new releases before you spent the money buying them and feature releases you never knew existed. A quarterly magazine which published 8mm stories and actually gave honest reviews of releases much at times to the anger of certain dealers.

During the course of meetings attending conventions Blackpool and London came up in conversations. Most if not all had not been to either. What was the point of spending £200 to £300 when you could buy films with that! The collector who had been to most was Eddy Goodwin who had been attending Blackpool for years even arranging his holiday time from a busy job to make sure he was available.

He basically summed it up as you DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING. Anyway he convinced enough of us to have three car loads travelling via sea ferry across to Scotland and down through Northern England on a Friday night / very early Saturday morning. Eventually arrived at Blackpool and whilst some idiots like me decided to explore Blackpool in a Force 6 gale with torrential rain(definitely wakes you up when you haven't slept all night ) other boring people actually went for a nap.

On the night of the dinner we realised we hadn't told Derann we were a group so we were scattered amongst all the tables across the room. Whilst initially we thought this was a downer we actually got to meet and converse with more collectors that we would have if grouped together. Most collectors either go alone or with their partner or sometimes one or two mates. We were an one off in that there were 8 to 10 of us as a group plus a few others who had gone separately.

I think it was at this point were you realise film collectors tend to be solitary hobbyists. It's no wonder there was a company called Lone Wolf!!

Anyway at these dinners you will always get banter and film collecting info.
If you feel shy / isolated at these dinners I would recommend You buy a drink for your fellow collectors apparently a rare experience amongst certain countrymen. It actually works in US as well After the first drink they will talk to you after two they are your best mate. There was actually a collector I met in the first year remembered my first name three years later lol.

The day of the convention to anyone has never been to one is like reaching El Dorado you will see films and equipment beyond your dreams. I rarely went home without a bundle half my height.

In summary, to those who have never been it is a pleasant enriching experience and even if you don't go for the banter you will see titles you never see and at prices you will never get on the internet.

Convinced yet?

Okay let me explain in plain terms staying at home or sitting on the Internet pretending this is a hobby is like masturbation going to a convention is the closest you will get to having sex in a film collecting term.

In final summary, if you are a film collector going to a convention is like you "Sons of the Desert" moment it will be cinematic highlight of your collecting career. Nothing will compare to it apart from going to Perrys and meeting Ian in the flesh and he lets you project all your potential purchases all afternoon and eventually offers you a cup of tea. That of course is your " When Harry met Sally " moment. 🙇🏻Derann staff never let you loose on the stock on your own!!!😭😭😭

No doubt I have convinced none of the non believers 🎬🎬🎬

very very well said I to have been attending film conventions for over 35 years as a collecter with my father then in later years as a seller .my sons have been telling me for years to sell them all they say that's what they will do when I snuff it ,but sometimes I sell a film then regret selling it and end up buying it back .I love to collect titles and fiddle with projectors and meet old and new friends and enjoy having a chat I intend to keep blackpool running as long as I can .hope to see you over the weekend

And here was me thinking [Roll Eyes] for the last umpteen years, that it was just a hobby [Smile]

a great responce Mike. you have hit the nail right on the head. ask anyone who goes to Ealing, Blackpool, Farnworth.Harpendon Cinesea etc. i firmly believe that these events keep the interest in the hobby going.and without them, and the people doing them this hobby would decline even further. not only that i have met some fantastic people from it all. thank god there are still people wanting to run such events, and even more so, people wanting to go to them.

Not everyone will travel a couple of hundred miles to go to a convention these days, some I know won't travel a quarter of that, good news for those who do put the effort in, my recent trip to Ealing I thought was the best selection of films I've bought for years, better than ebay etc and cheaper!! Over the last couple of days I have been asked by two different people if there is a 'Dress'code for the Convention Dinner, the simple answer is NO. Some dinner guests will wear a suit and tie, others trousers and a shirt and again some guests will wear jeans and a tee-shirt so you see it does'nt matter, I think I have said this before a couple years ago there's no dress code other than wear SOME clothes no nudists,HA HA.

I have to fully endorse how enjoyable conventions are, as well as being the places to pick up fantastic bargains and rare and unusual pieces of equipment. I first attended Blackpool in 1984 and became so hooked that I haven't missed one since. It takes a few hours to get there from south London, but it takes time to reach most holiday destinations, and for many of us Blackpool is a short holiday with a film convention thrown in. I think I've missed two BFCCs, at the most, since 1982 and that was due to clashed with major work events.

I must say, though, that Andrew deserves some credit for stating his perspective and politely accepting all the 'stick' that comes his way, when it it would be easier to keep a low profile and steer clear of this thread in the way that some UK collectors - who ALWAYS have a problem "this year" when referring to conventions - do!

But I'll offer theses words to Andrew: OK, I appreciate that you're often unavailable for work-related reasons, and even if you did come, you may not find any Super 8 to buy. But if you find you're available one year, I'd still strongly recommend coming to Blackpool because I genuinely think you would enjoy it. Considering that some people who completely gave up collecting film some time ago have such a great time that they can't resist it, how could someone such as yourself who clearly enjoys interacting with collectors via forums, fail to enjoy a chance to do so in person, in relaxed and friendly circumstances. And you would probably enjoy the film presentations too. And you can never underestimate the chance of something completely unexpected turning up, that you didn't know you wanted because you never knew it existed on Super 8! E.g. I've been an enthusiastic collector of trailers for over 30 years, and I recently discovered that a distributor that I'd assumed had never released trailers had actually released a whole series of them, corresponding to their other releases, in attractive plastic boxes!

Thanks for those kind words earlier there Adrian, most appreciated.

I do indeed feel for some bizarre and unbeknown reason to myself, that it is I and I alone who has to continually make myself accountable as to why I am not attending this, that and the other convention if I'm honest.
I am not an ignorant person and this a is trait that I truly despise in others, therefore I will always see fit and see it as good manners and courtesy to offer an explanation each and every time, although I do have to admit, it does become tiresome now after so many occasions of being asked.

As I've explained, I like only Super 8mm, within that category, I like only a certain era of Super 8mm product (both hardware and software for want of a better term), I have all the hardware now that I will ever need in my lifetime and most of the films I ultimately seek.
If other "special" titles surface at a price I am comfortable with, I may buy some, but they simply have to be in near mint condition for me to remain interested in these products even then, before I will consider purchasing any.

Everyone I wish to speak with in this game on a regular basis, I do do.
Just as if I were at a convention, I am geographically restricted by who I may actually meet with up in person, but to those guys within the hobby I or they have a reason to meet with, then we both have done on several occasions, and some regularly over the years.

I have many many people I consider very good friends within this hobby, some I have met in person, some I have not.
for all those people who I consider to be my good friends in this hobby, there are no lengths I will not go to for each and every one of them as is appropriate for whatever the reasons.

Most of the time my work gets in the way of much I love to do via a fixed calendar, this includes following my beloved Manchester City whereby I can no longer justify buying a season ticket for them any longer. This is the same for the conventions at times, and many many other social occasions.

As said. I am a shift worker of a bizarre pattern, I have to simply work and live with that.

Politely I say,I hope this is the very last time I waste 10 minutes of my life both having to justify myself or having to continually explain my personal circumstances, all in the name of courtesy. [Wink]

Joe

If there was one present convention I would really like to attend its your Cinesea.

Just to meet up "in person" to all those from this forum, eg Steve etc would be great, plus the chance to see a bit of the US at the same time. [Cool]

Andrew,
You shouldn't have to keep explaining why you don't attend these conventions, i knew it was coming round to Blackpool as the questions started and strangely enough the same questions asked, hopefully you've finally cleared things up . Mark.

My comments were not directed at anyone more the undecided or the uninitiated who have never been to a convention. The other topic became tiresome long ago. Your assumption is neither wrong or right I have a vociferous appetite and indulge all formats. Somebody mentioned dress for the dinner it is very come as you no pjs or lyrca but don't be put off by the DVDs from 30 years ago most of the older tuxedos are in the projection room in the sky and the banter can be great. Even then attire varied dramatically from table to table.

I forgot to mention the cut and thrust of the infamous Blackpool auction where a bid or outbid over a prized offering can make you a lifetime foe.😜

I might even make an appearance at Blackpool now if circumstances permit I don't think my details are with Interpol yet although I assume I would have to buy a ticket to the dinner under an assumed name or risk arsenic like Dark Angel. 😍

So the sum up Blackpool Convention Great time Great Place Great Experience.

Cinesea if someone will tell me which State it is in the US might be a starter. We all know we are staying with Joe that weekend 😄 Would a wee lift to Winterset in Iowa be a inconvenience???

CineSea is in New Jersey: it's like Jersey, just newer!

Iowa is something like a thousand miles westward.

Mike - we already have four attendees from NI coming to the dinner, so if you're free and can book very soon, why not make it five? Unless you're convinced you have sworn enemies amongst our normally friendly crowd, I think you'll be perfectly safe. There hasn't been a death at the dinner since the rather unsuccessful 'murder mystery' element that Derann tried one year!

For anyone going to Blackpool for this coming weekends film
show, dinner and convention for the first time, I thought it may be useful to give some simple directions to the venue the Hilton Hotel.
When you get into Blackpool Head for the Blackpool Tower you can hardly miss it.From the tower make your way onto the main road right on the sea front, looking straight out to sea, you will be facing WEST, now simply turn right, you are now facing North,go along the main road keeping the sea on your left hand side, travel about 2km.and you will see the Hilton Hotel, it's a tall detached modern building in it's own grounds. The main entrance is on the seaward side, but the hotels car park entrance is on the adjacent side road
there is a barrier across the car park entrance so you will need to take a ticket from the machine to raise the barrier.Once you are parked up there is an entrance into the hotel from the car park, go up the stairs or use the lifts,go up one floor for the reception desk.
