While just wasting time, I came across a very interesting documentary made for Channel 4 entitled 'The man who ruined the British Film Industry. It tells the story of John davis who became J. Arthur Rank's right hand man, and who, in the opinion of many in his organisation, was the reason for it's downfall. Worth a look. Just type in the title.

John Davis (1906-1993) joined Odeon Theatres in 1938 as an accountant. He became Managing Director of the Rank Organisation in 1948.
He was knighted in 1971.
