Years ago I bought the Super8 version of this film from the Derann second hand list. I was surprised to see how good the print was...nice color...good sound....nice and sharp.

However over the years its faded, especially near the end in the caves, later I came across another Super8 print that sadly has now faded into the sunset as well.

Both prints are no longer viewable [Frown]

.....of late I came across excellent reviews on amazon.uk. The DVD arrived just last week and I must say its excellent.

The DVD is by Fremantle Home Entertainment, PAL Region 2. Just about all the DVD players sold out here are Region Free and will play both Pal and NTSC, basically they will play anything.

So if you want to upgrade from a faded print of this particular title, I can certainly recommend this release, anyway here are a couple of screen shots of the DVD, using the Epson VP the other night.

What's nice also is that the intro has rounded corners then moves to academy when the movie starts.

For a film that was released back in 1938, this DVD transfer by Fremantle is truly remarkable.

I hope one day they will do a HD Blu-ray transfer.

Boy! You're not kidding.

I'm still amazed that such a big money-maker when it came out, has not gotten the bluray restoration treatment. I'd love to see a full restoration.

I have this on super 8 as well, but, as yours did, so has mine. it was printed on Kodak SP, and while some sections seem to have more passable color than other, the blacks are brownish. I still hold out hope that this was re-printed by some other company on low fade stock, or i just happen to luck out on a very well stored Kodak SP that hasn't succumbed to the ravages of fade yet, (which I could then store properly in the fridge!) I've never seen a good color one, partially good color, but I've always been in search for it, but this DVD, I think, is the original run time, where the ABC super 8 release is the slightly edited re-release version.

That's incredible Graham. I saw the ABC version for sale years ago, but I think it was B&W. I bought their version of 'Little Lord Fauntleroy', which is also a Selznic production.

The sharpest image I have ever seen on DVD is Korda's 'Thief of Baghdad'.

Through Grahams recommendation I ordered the DVD and it was wonderful. I sort of remember seeing this as a child and being scared by the cave scenes. Had a SUPER 8 print of this year's ago but didn't look like this.

I must say that though I would LOVE to get ahold of a completely unfaded Kodak SP of this Tom Sawyer, (Good luck on that!), this Tom Sawyer on super 8 is the re-issue version that was put out later, running about 78 or so minutes. The DVD does have the original run time for the feature, so it does have a little stuff in there that's not in the super 8.

I quite agree Graham. I have the same DVD. Having looked at your post the cover on mine stated it was in B/W. but when I played it, there and behold gorgeous Technicolour!! Ken Finch. [Smile]
