Another little topic, in relation to print quality has varied over the years from the late 60s to the 70s until it became cinema quality standard in the 80s & 90s. But what is the print that stands out from all the rest that was a joy to watch colour and sound and Definition and Clarity wise. The ultimate experience in Super 8.

Predator, Commando, Fall of the Roman Empire, El Cid and Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Poltergeist is up there too but possibly not quite the impact but still perfect.

Later prints of the above titles are generally not as good as early prints. Negative wear, change of labs, change of film stock etc..

"Alien" (scope), and "Aliens" are probably my most beautiful prints. And the quality holds consistently through those two movies.

Then, there are other super 8 releases that are good, but certain scenes stand out that would rival any DVD. Take for example, "Independence Day". Overall, it is a very nice scope print. But the dog-fight scene between Will Smith and the two Alien fighter ships is stunning! I sometimes show this 15 minute scene, and people are amazed at how great super 8 scope can be!

I would have to say Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with re-recorded stereo track....closely followed by Thunderball . Both offer 35mm theater like experience.

'Grease' is a stunning quality scope print, as is 'Lady and the Tramp'. Best flat print I have seen is 'Meet Me in St Louis'.

"Meuterei auf der Bounty" (Kempski-print, Scope, full feature, orig. title: "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1962) ) is absoultely great! I would say that you can't do any better on Super8.
(I must admit that "Independance Day" and "Predator" look great, too. Several Disney-prints by Derann are among the "best prints" as well.)

"Shane" (flat) and "West Side Story"(Kempski, scope) are two amazing prints.

for me DALEKS INVASION EARTH 2150AD from Walton 4 x400ft sharp as a pin for super8, also FLIGHT OF THE PHENOIX 1x400ft Ken Films, probably the sharpest of their line of 400ft digests (that I have seen anyway)

This was a good question to debate!

For me and anyone else who can run scope, I have to say that Disney's A BUG'S LIFE is on my top list. Being a computer graphics movie anyhow, the detail into the animation of the characters must be seen to be believed. Try this on a 4 foot tall by 12 foot wide screen sitting back about 20 feet and you'll see for yourself!

Second on my list would be scope print of Grease as Paul already said. I also have Bambi and Lady & The Tramp and both are great although Bambi is flat.

I did think about sticking a note in about the Disney features when I first posted a reply but his the 'Reply' button before I'd put anything down and then decided to just leave it. Yes, there are some excellent prints in the Disney/Derann range. Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book and quite a few others. But of all the titles everyone else has listed with perhaps a few exceptions they are not amongst the best prints. They are all, however, very good.

Some optical prints also rate favourably with the best on super 8, although many have of course faded now. 'Little Shop of Horrors' was outstanding.

I still say that the optical print of "Broadway Danny Rose" (sepia tone) is the sharpest Super 8 print I have ever seen, and i would honestly have to say that against every Derann print I have seen. To see my argument, you would have to see the print for yourself.

"Yellowbeard" and "City Heat" also optical, are truly a cut above nearly all others, (besides Broadway). This honestly isn't because I like opticals. I have Poltergeist, Logan's Run, Alien, Star Wars, as well as Derann's Snow White, (also a great print), but those old opticals truly were amazing prints, and easily comparable to a DVD image on TV.

Long live Super 8!!

The best print I have in my collection is Walton's 400ft of When the North Wind Blows. Not my favourite film by a long shot, but it's absolutely sparkling. I bought it new in the '80's, watched it a couple of times, treated it with 2.22 then sealed it in a metal can for twenty-odd years (I can imagine everyone throwing their arms up in the air in horror!). When I looked at it a couple of weeks ago I was stunned by the vivid blues of the sky and crisp white of the snow. And as for the tigers, they look incredible. When Walton got it right they really got it right. Just wish my Daleks film had fared as well.
