This is a film by the BBC which I just got from the Derann s/h list.

200ft colour sound.

The film is all about the wrongs and rights of putting on an organised film show with Graham Stark.

It takes place in a samll church hall where some of the congregation are going to watch a religious film "Preachers of the Son"
The guy arrives late and the people are there waiting for their film show. He pops the 16mm projector up onto pair of chairs to get the height right. Pokes the bare wires fmom the mains lead in to the wall socket as he doesnt have the right plug but at the same time the wire is strung high between the projector and the mid height wall socket.

He then goes onto put his screen up in place with no care at all.
He goes back to the projetcor and pops the end of the film into the 16mm autoloader but even that doesnt go as planned with the result that there are sveral feet of film round the room. Once he get his image on the screen and the film running he has to again stop the film move some peoples chairs so he can move the projector closer to the screen as the image was twice the size of the screen. The show gets going and all seems ok until a late stragler arives and walks into the mains cable bringing the projector etc crashing to the ground.

This first part of this short is fast paced and very entertaining.

The second part goes through the whole procedure again but shows you how it should be done. The one thing that they do say at the end is to check the film first to make sure you are showing the correct film. On the screen is a film with the same title "Preachers of the Sun" which turns out to be a porn film [Eek!]

I found the whole reel very entertaining and quite funny in places....one thats good for a laugh [Big Grin]

Picture quality is quite good but a little grainy. Sound is also good. Its one of these shorts that you just seem to get into and not worry about the technicalities of the film itself. Typical 70's stuff.

I've always wondered what the film was about, as Derann's used-sales lists would never go into detail about it, instead playing the cliffhanger card [Eek!]

but now that I know more I think I'll be getting a copy of this film as well. The bit about the Preachers of the Sun porn movie is hilarious [Cool]

Someone told me that Derek used a 16mm print as the master, so the quality is pretty good considering. He also edited it, but from what I recall (I've seen it but I don't have a copy), you would have trouble working out where.

Other than seeing my own head cast a shadow on the bottom of the projected image... (which prompted me to put the projector up higher and project downward from near the ceiling)

I don't have a really juicy one of my own, but I can borrow one I read about.

My favorite filmmaker is Bill Mason. He made a great many films in the Canadian wilds in a very simple style by grabbing a 16mm Bolex and pushing off in a canoe. I've done a lot of this myself in Super-8, but shall we say my talents are kind of tiny compared to this guy. (although the experience has helped me appreciate his work even more.)

Anyway, his last film "Waterwalker" was finished, and he invited the man that mentored him early on to come see it at his house. He projected in 16mm on a screen in his living room. He found that in order to fill the screen he had to back up the machine: first through the living room, then out the doors onto the deck and finally with the projector actually sitting on the railing with the takeup reel hanging over. (in a sitcom, this is the moment where the woman in the audience says "Uh, oh!")

The show was just fine until Bill went back to change reels and found an entire 800 foot reel of brand new 16mm film had never been attached to the takeup reel and was down on the ground in front of the deck, mixed with the pinecones and needles and the good Canadian soil!

...and remember: this was a professional!
