Hi,

I was wondering if this camera can have a syncro sound system attached to it. There is two entry near the slow motion boutton. One is marker R and the other S. The is also another button just beside the frame-per-second button that i don't know what is it's use. It is written F and M and now ir's placed in the middle were there is nothing written. If this camera can uses a sound syncro system can i know where i could locate one. I just picked up this camera with some kodachrome film. I would like to shoot and then get my film sound-stripped. I am not a filmmaker just an average person who want to bring his camera and film his friends. I do have a video camera but i live the super 8mm and the idea that you can project your memories.

Long time no write. Have you tried this camera out yet?

I am sitting here with my own ST/602. So I'll try to answer your questions:

Sorry, I don't think there is any sync system available for these cameras.

The "S" and "R" are sockets for a cable release. If you use "S" you will get a single frame. "R" will run the camera continuously.

The button next to the frame rate selector on mine is a speed selector for the power zoom. Your "F" and "M" are a "F" and "S" on my camera. (are you sure about the "M"?) The selector should definitely be in one position or the other. Why not put it in both positions and see what effect it has on the zoom speed.

By the way, you can be an "Average Person" and be a filmmaker too. That's the beauty of Super-8. You and I and anybody else who wants to can shoot some real film and make his or her own movie. You can be as creative as your imagination allows, and just maybe you'll do something wonderful!

Hi,

no i have not tryed the camera yet. My father have one of those light tho film inside the house with the super 8 camera. However the light don't fit on the camera and it's one of those really big light. It's a 500 watts. It becomes very hot very rapidely. I don't know if i should use it to film my friend. The issue is that the films are silent and i won't be able to hear them speak. Do you think it would works filming family fireworks with ektachrome 160 without filter ?

Getting exact lip-sync sound is pretty complicated business. Usually it's done by exactly controlling the speed of the recorder and camera with crystal syncronizers, and this is probably not going to be possible with the GAF. Usually when you think of crystal sync, it's on high end cameras like Beaulieus and Nizos.

You can still achieve a reasonable sync over short [<30 sec] scenes, but this is best done with a slate [clapper], not exactly the best thing for casual filmmaking: ["OK Mom, backyard barbecue scene 4, take two!"]

What you have with non crystal synced stuff is that over the course of a scene the camera and recorder will speed up and slow down, and what may have started exactly synced will pretty quickly drift out. It doesn't take too much to be noticeable either.

What I want to do with adding sounds on a stripe is things like narration, music and ambient sound, in other words wild sound. Obviously it would be even better to have the abilty to do on camera dialog, but just this will take me way beyond what I can now do silent.
