Wow, I can't believe I finally found some people that enjoy Super
8mm. As you can see on the display, my name is Dick Lee. I live in Oklahoma City, OK, USA.

A little background: I'm 57 years old, married with 3 children and one grandson. I am a retired Postal Clerk. I became interested in movies at the ripe old age of 5yrs. My father and his business partner that lived across the street, would put on
shows once a month. (This was in 1952) My dad had an old Ampro
16mm sound proj. and we would watch the movies on the white side of the partners garage. When you are 5 years old and watching your own picture show, the bugs don't seem to bother you. He-He
That lasted for @ 2yrs. Movies were rented, accept for a Mighty Mouse B&W Castle Cartoon (which I still have)

My next adventure into the movie realm was when I was in the Army, in 1966. I was stationed in Denver, Colorado at the Army
Hospital there. They needed a projectionist to take and show movies around to the different wards. Most of which were guys just back from "Nam". They even gave me my own (very small) room
to keep the equipment and movies in. That lasted for @ 5 months.
This was of course in 16mm also.

I was introduced to Super 8mm while I was in the Army also, stationed at Ft. Lee, Va. I was married and my wife and I treated ourselves to a Super 8mm Camera. Although we didn't have a proj. to watch the movies on.

After getting out of the Army, my next adventure with film was a part time job working in a processing lab. The lab processed B&W and Color film with the emphasis on sports training films. I would go to work at 2100 hrs, just before the High School football games were over with. We would process all the game films from all over the state until @ 0330 hrs. I did this for
2 yrs. before the owner found out I had access to a Cannon Scoopic 16mm camera with an Auto Eye. He asked me if I would be interested in filming the games and I said yes imediately. A big boost in salary, not to mention not having to smell the acedic acid fragrance. I continued this part time job for 20 yrs, until video finally tolled the death knell.

Also, during this time, I found a newspaper from a company called "Blackhawk". From there it was all down hill. With access to Blackhawk and The Big Reel, I started a small business of showing movies at kids birthday parties; I also had movies showing in 5 different pizza parlors, and would also show movies in some of the local pubs in an around some of the colleges in Oklahoma. This all occurred from 1970 to 1978. There was a highedous until @ 1984, then I after a long dry spell (forced) I got back into the hobby.

With what I had acumulated (?) during the 70's and until 2000, my collection had really taken off. Then in March of 2001, a devestating fire gutted our house. I managed to save more than I thought I would be able to, but lost a huge amount of film and projectors, including my 1200 ST.

My collection is now made up of 95% 16mm and 5% Super8. My love being with Super 8. I have only two full length features in Super 8 sound, "Hoppity Goes To Town" and "Fiend Without A Face". There's several Little Rascals, L&H, Silent Comedy, Cartoons. I am using a Copal Super 8mm Sound proj and a 16mm Ekai. My 16's are a pretty even split between TV shows and WWll
combat and training films, a few T&J cartoons mixed in.

Well I've gone on about me long enough (I appologize for the length) I've read the first 5 pages of the forum and loved every minute of it. I am amazed at the comradery (?) and the wealth of knowledge that is represented here. I am looking forward to speaking with all of you at one time or another.

Hello Dick and welcome to the forum, it is good to see more americans joining in, there must be a wealth of 8 & 16mm over there given the huse population, i know most or all the 8mm dealers are all gone over there now but do you have any good 16mm outlets we dont know about? Altough ive been a collector all my working life,(im now a 42 years young) i am a relatively newcomer to this forum, there is a lot of good help on here and some good laughs to. If you know Derann films in the UK (i think every cine enthusiast must do) you will have heard of the quartely magazine they do, if you dont already recieve it you may well want to consider having a look.

Hi, Dick, welcome to the forum. I've been collecting films for about three years and am knee deep in acetate and mylar. There's a lot of super 8 across the pond. I would really like to take a trip to the U. of K. and meet the guys and gals and visit the brick and motar dealers. I'd love to see Tony killing small animals in the dark and putting them on th BBQ. [Eek!]

P.S. You wouldn't happen to know where those 11 films are that fell out a Media Mail box about a year ago? [Razz]

Thanks for the welcome Tom. I know about Derann, but I don't know about the magazine. Can you explain? I have about 75-100 16mm prints, as I said about 50% TV shows from the 50's and sixties. The only constant source for the shows is Ebay, unfortunately. I haven't heard of a film convention around here in over 15 years. The last one I knew about was in Memphis, Tenn. I do have one friend that has @ 2-3 times the amount of film that I have. What TV shows do you have?

Dan, yes, I would like to visit them also. I'll be quite envious
of the people that get to go to the BFCC get together coming up.

Sorry, but I don't know but there are quite a few carriers out there that have "holes" in there bags.

The magazine is a 4 a year mag which is done through Derann films, our subscription rates here is £14 per year, the mag is 99.9% dedicated to film with ads and articles and some very usefull tips from many, [Roll Eyes]

Most important it is dedicated to the celluloid user and everyone can do there own bit if they so choose,i reckon you boys across the Atlantic would enjoy it as im sure some already do. it also includes Reviews of all the latest releases via the sage of super 8 Kieth Wilton.

You should try to get to the Columbus Cinevent over Memorial Day weekend....it's been going every year since I started collecting back in the late 60's. They have a huge dealers room with 16 and 8mm dealers ..a lot of posters and that sort of thing..also projectors and other cinema related things..plus screenings all day and almost all night...and a bulletin board where folks put up for sale lists , etc. It's great. check out its web page. search for cinevent . Welcome. I read with great interest your highly descriptive intro, thank you for sharing that with us.

Sorry that you can't make it over. Perhaps an enterprising dealer such as Derann could rig up a web-cam for those that can't make it? Who knows they might even sell you something.
