Sorry Andy, It's hard not to be flippant on this topic. We all love our projectors and we defend them to the death. I'll leave it for someone else to list the amazing things this Elmo does (tax returns, pole vaulting, etc.), but since you have one, you know all this.

Certain Bauers & Eumigs are right up there too!

Andy, The GS1200 is like a delicate racing car. Needs constant attention but runs like a charm. Like Doug, I have two of these machines. Ugo, my mentor in the elmo field has five or six different units.
But I do have a soft spot also for Eumig, Bauer, Fumeo and Beaulieu...

A dream machine would feature the frame and capacity of a Fumeo, the threading/unthreading system of a Beaulieu and the complete sound (stereo mag, opt, ESS, etc.) equipment of a GS1200.

Well the dream machine doesn't exist but the Elmo is quite close.

Andy,
For me it has been being able to re-record to near CD quality with the ease of pulse sync. I am not aware of which other projectors have this facility. 1200ft is enough capacity and the ESC 200W lamp puts out enough light. Not to big as some of the Beauelli machines I have seen are huge.
Very heavy, a back sprung gate and geared focusing are all that it is missing.

Stuart, yes, they are totally different models. The GS came later and although it quite rightly generally has the reputation as being the ultimate Super 8 projector it is also accused of being over engineered (i.e. over complicated). Therefore there is more that can go wrong on a GS. The ST series by comparison has the reputation of being the workhorse of Super 8 projectors. Track down a decent ST-1200HD (note the 'HD' suffix) and it is possible to get stereo sound from it.

And Jan, I also have two words... GS1200 HTI.
