I tried to contact
Gary via e-mail
last week, and I have
not heard back?

Are Derann's e-mail
or servers down?

Michael

Not that I'm aware of - why not try emailing him again, or email Ged or Adrian or, well, someone at Derann?

Hi, Michael are you using DFS in your email address

Posted by Kevin Faulkner (Member # 6) on August 12, 2006, 05:19 PM:

You must put DFS in the subject line of all emails to Derann as otherwise your emails are rejected as spam.

Try that and see how you get on.

Kev.

Thanks guys,
and I was beginning
to think that
it was something
that I had not
affixed to the
Apple Mail Client,
after updating to Tiger.

Yesterday, I also
had difficulty
in receiving mail,
after a receptionist
told me that
Verizon subscribers
have difficulty in
receiving incoming mail
from thier company,
after it passes through
their server.
Luckily, I still had
Earthlink, and provided the other
mail account, and everything
was received A-OK.

It seems that all of
the internal mail settings
are fine, but I guess some things
just don't work?
I just don't get this electronic mail stuff. [Confused]

Michael

I can't believe I forgot about the DFS part. Glad all is sorted out, though... and, well, email is part of the Internet, which by its very nature is huge and complex... often things go wrong that are beyond our control and have nothing to do with settings on our home computers, or even our ISPs, even though it may seem like it in some cases.

The internet is so opaque to the average user that even among technical people it can be a complete mystery!

I sent two e-mails home from work recently spaced a few hours apart. The first arrived after the second one(!?)

Where on Earth (or even off-earth) was it that whole time?! Perhaps trapped beneath some vitual rock waiting for other e-mails to knock it loose?

That's a pretty good analogy there, actually! Thing is, everything that goes out over the Internet is broken up into small packets of data... and each packet may travel a completely different way from A to B, depending on gateways and routers along the way that decide what goes where (performing load balancing along the way)... some of these mid-points could be overloaded or simply fail at any time, only to automatically recover a short time later... it pretty much comes down to the natural entropy inherent in a very large and complex network of devices. But I digress into philosophy...

Now you know why we call you "Doctor"... [Wink]

Gary,

Was on Holiday last week, not sure if he's back this week, but don't forget DFS in the subject line.

This is one of the joys of a piece of film and a projector:

The film goes in one end and comes out the other and doesn't take some random path of maybe several thousand miles to cover a distance I drive in 20 minutes!

I work mainly in Analog electronics and the fact that a system reacts exactly the same under the same conditions makes it much easier to design and troubleshoot (or even understand!).

Systems that react randomly are becoming a little too much like... people!

Steve,

it depends - if your projector happens to have a problem, film might go in, only to never be seen again - that is until you decide to stop the machine and open the cover, at which point film salad spills out onto the floor! [Eek!] [Big Grin]

Jan,

Please don't say: 'film salad.'
It reminds me when I once opened a
package that was shipped with 16mm film,
and the whiff of vinegar literally
knocked me on my A_ _. [Eek!]

Not a pretty picture.

Uh-oh... salad with dressing!

(Sorry, couldn't resist saying it again)

[Eek!]

Sorry guys,
Gary was on holiday
(Yes unfortunately I am required by law to let them have time off, but am looking for a way around it).
He is back, and raring to take your orders

Kind regards

Adrian
