The Fog (1X600)
Alien (feature)
Poltergeist (feature)

I also have a "happy antagonism" with these rich guys who can afford all those features .......

GRRRRR!

Actually, if I was to include optical sound features that I've bought from Derann, the number would be a good deal higher, but I was just including ones that were actually manufactured by Derann. For instance, I have "Logan's Run" which I bought from Derann, but was a Kempski print.

Hey, I work a lot, just a lot is poured forth on living expenses around here. I've been pretty lucky though, most of my features I've bought I've bought at a bargain price, and the super 8 opticals usually tend to be a lot less in cost, which is another reason why I buy them. For instance, I just bought "Children of a Lesser God" and "Rocky 3" on super 8 optical film for 75.00 dollars each, so, I've been lucky.

I had no idea "Children of a Lesser God" was out on optical. Have the colors in general on your opticals been holding up?

Andy,

Years go I bought the abridged version of "Scars"which has faded quite a bit. I recently picked up the full length feature and it's beautiful!

Yes, the colors on "Children of a Lesser God" are great! As usual, the picture is sparkling. I love optical sound. That brings my total to, I believe, 33 optical sound features, with only two having slightly fading color.

Sorry, no trade for Rocky 3, (but I admire your sense of humor), the best thing about Derann films is thier use of superior stock. Of course, like all companies, earlier on they used inferior Eastman (a long LONG time ago, on a continent far far away!), but all these modern prints, for about the last, what, twenty years?, have been Eastman LPP stock, (or fuji stock as well?), which means these prints will outlast thier owners, (in most cases, as most super 8 collectors are over 30 or so!)

Hi Brian,
great collection... and I thought I was the only horror collector on this forum. I have most of the Mountain horror releases but I have never come across "The Monster of Piedras Blancas" in 4x400ft Super 8 sound. It is a very hard title to find. Maybe only a few features were sold but I have been looking for years and it never shows up. Likewise your "Wasp Woman" is a difficult feature to get in Super 8. I sold my print years ago when I thought that video was the future of "Home Cinema" and have always regretted it. Luckily I have got back most of the films I foolishly got rid of in the 80's.
Derann, Walton and Powell Films between them released all of the classic British horror films, but Mountain were great for all those classic PRC and RKO titles as well as minor classics from Europe and the Philippines. Also as most of their films were in black and white they are still in great condition.
Luckily the mainstay of every Super 8 distributors lists were the horror and sci-fi movies so we are happily spoilt for choice with titles.
All the best,
Paul.

Kev,

This is wonderful
collection of Disney
Features,and quite impressive.

It inpires me
to dream of a future
wish list with all of
those fantastic memories
sitting on my shelf too.

Derrick made the 8mm
Disney collectors
joyful with all these great
releases. Who would have
dreamed this to have
become a reality today
and especially
during the '70's?

Kudos to you in grabbing the
lion share.

I currently have Snow White
and an assortment of Silly
Symphony and Mickey Mouse
Cartoons.

I also have an assortment
of Tom & Jerry's, Tex Avery, Trailers,
The Laurel and Hardy newsreels,
and Dymchurch Railway Jubilee,
and Scrat from Ice Age.
Pieces of Silver and Reflections
are great too.

One Silly Symphony- Three Little Pigs,
totally surprised me in being uncut
uncensored, and unlike any prints,
circulating here in the USA.
Good job Derann.

Why yes, Kevin, I DID note thew little smiley face next to Close Encounters. Oh yeah, I have Close Encounters in a 400ft. version, top that! Oh yeah, and I own the first Flash Gordon serial, (not Derann) so, ha ha ha!

All kidding aside, I do admire your collection of Disney Derann features, which reminds me, I DO have Fantasia 2000, from Derann, with "The Sorcerers Apprentice" from the early 80's to make my Fantasia 2000 complete, (as I believe Disney, for some asinine reason, wouldn't allow Derann the print rights to "The Sorcerers Apprentice.")

Hi Graham,
The only Disney feature I have is 'Lady and the Tramp'. It is a terrific quality scope print and looks great on my GS (which is not a xenon version). It is also comes with a stereo sound track, but I re-recorded mine anyway and the sound is now as superb as the picture.

they all have pristine
quality and
beautiful color.

Thankyou everyone for the kind comments about the Disney collection. Yes I'm a big kid at heart but then arent we all [Wink]

All the Disney prints are great in terms of colour, sharpness and generally the sound. Its just a shame that Derann's first Disney release "Little Mermaid" was so poor but they and Disney learnt a lot from that first release and future releases had negs produced by Disney themselves.
This whole topic will be covered in the next "Smallformat" mag so get your subscriptions in now [Wink]

Osi I noted your comments about Fantasia 2000 and ran my copy to check the Sorcerers segment. Its on my reel 3 straight after the Carnival of the Animals segment.
I cant understand why yours has not go that segment unless Derann were not able to include it in versions being sold to markets abroad. I know there have been strange differances with copyright in certain countries but am surprised that they would have had a different release for the relatively few super8 prints sold. Lets face it they dont sell in the same numbers as say VHS and DVD.
Did you buy your copy new? or did you buy it s/h and someone has lifted that segement out [Frown] . Is there a splice after the Carnival of the Animals segemnt? Very strange [Eek!]

Anyway I love all these prints and will not part with any of the cartoons. Still have a few more titles to add to the list. [Smile]

I am glad to hear you will not part with your disney titles Kev.
As for OSI; it may be copyright laws in his part of the world...
though it does seem wierd to me.
Mine you my RAISE THE TITANIC does have a bit missing;i got it on the second hand market. So i guess we have to watch what we all buy
from now on.Derann and classic are the main two dealers in the u.k
releasing new super8mm titles.More power to their elbows.Andy.

Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on September 02, 2006, 05:09 PM:

Kev, you may be right, I did buy it second hand, and it was missing the Scorcerers Apprentice segment, which wasn't a problem, as I already had that, but I had heard that it wasn't sold as part of the Fantasia 200 feature. I may have been mis-informed. It's cwertianly not the first time and no doubt won't be the last.

Posted by Kevin Faulkner (Member # 6) on September 02, 2006, 05:26 PM:

Osi. I'm almost certain that you will find a join at that point in reel 3. Most of the original copies of the Sorcerers extract that Disney put out are suffering from the dreaded fade so I bet someone lifted that segment out before selling it on [Frown]

I think you were missinformed about the inclusion of that segemnt. It's in my copy and also Doug's. I will ask Derann if they released copies without the Sorcerer segement but I think I know what the answer will be...no.

Kev.

Gauging by the long lists of titles each of you have posted above I'd say Derann has to be sold out, no wonder my total count is 0.

Seriously though, at $300-600 a title some of your collections come close to the original purchase price of our home. [Wink] I feel that I'm doing good when I come home with the occasional $20 DVD.

I'd like to own a few features but I have mouths to feed that don't run on electricity.

Ricky, that one is "Rescuers Down Under". I'm on the lookout for The first and better outing "The Rescuers"

Cheers for the heads up though, Kev.

I was very interested in some of their Fox musicals like 'Hello Dolly' and "There's No Business Like Show Business". Can anyone please tell me if they were taken from negatives or release prints ?

Congratulations Ricky, you have an incredible list there... [Eek!]

Robert, Most were taken from Negs and the quality is great.

Thanks Dimitrios,

I've been collecting for a few years now and because I missed a lot of the titles on their first release have spent a lot of time (and money) tracking down original copies. I've also made a few friends along the way (and with today's posting [Wink] )

Thanks to the likes of Derek Simmonds and all the team at Derann, Ian (Perry's), Paul Foster, Phil (Classic Home Cinema), Barry (Independent 8), Larry (LPG), Buckingham Film Services, various collectors who've names I've long forgotten who have sold prints to me or pointed me in the direction of prints I was after, Ebay! Keith Wilton and last but not least Kevin F [Smile]

It's been fun finding the gems but my search is not over yet as there are still one or two titles I'd like to add to my collection.

And if there's anything in the 'duplicates' list anyone is interested in then drop me an email and I'll start checking the prints as I need to rationalise my collection a bit !! [Big Grin]

It's a 'pirate' from Germany... and I do mean a 'pirate' and not up to the usual German standard [Frown]

How on earth do you determine a first run print from any other????

Posted by Ricky Daniels (Member # 95) on September 27, 2006, 05:55 AM:

Tony,

For starters by knowing the source of the print you are offered. Knowing when a print was first purchased compared to the release dates published in Film For The Collector over the past years. Prints in original artwork packaging. Being offered review evaluation prints. Looking for original pre-striped copies, etc, etc. Basically doing some research and if all else fails purchase several copies and compare print quality because we all know how variable they can be! [Wink]

Is that print of Jaws 'Scope? When were the prints struck? Any part of it good enough for a BFCC screening??? I'm sure I can't be the only collector who'd love to get his teeth into a full length Super 8 print of Jaws.

John,

I'll have to dig it out and check as I can't recall the Aspect Ratio but if memory serves me correctly it's not up to being projected to 24foot wide! [Eek!] If it's any good I'll pass a reel to KW

Ricky

John,

I finally got around to checking the FEATURE length print of JAWS I bought from Germany some time ago.

It's on 2x1200 footers, it's SCOPE [Eek!] and complete apart from the front titles which are from the digest and 'flat' [Frown]

It's not brilliant, is rather scratched but what a rare find indeed!

Unfortunately the language is German!! [Confused] but that was to be expected.

I only have the "Dracula - Prince Of Darkness" cutdown in scope yet I don't have a scope lens so I have to watch it squeezed. "Lonesome Ghosts" which I just adore and the cut down of "Taste The Blood Of Dracula" which is just terrific. If Derann re-released shorts (ie:Stooges or L&H) and the U-8 cutdowns of the classic titles - I'd be all in. I'd love to have them all on better quality stock.

Just curious as I don't collect Super 8.

Posted by Michael Beyer (Member # 1143) on November 23, 2009, 01:22 AM:

Hi Michael,
I think the Deranns are one of the best what you can get on Super 8. Together with the prints from the German Lab. But I saw some newer Derann prints (with the black sound track) which were not as good as the older ones. Not in the way of sharpness, brightness and contrast, they are great as ever, but the picture vibrates a little bit.

Regards,
Michael
