I am fortunate enough to have pretty well all the Movie Maker Magazines from 1968 through to 1985, over the past couple of months or so I have scanned quite a few of the equipment reviews and Bill Davisons film reviews, at the request of a couple of the members on the forum.

Hi Mike,
Have sent you a PM.

hi Mike, I assume that MOVIE MAKER was published in the UK. I saved all my issues of SUPER8FILMAKER from way back when; each issue had a product review of super 8mm cameras & projectors. It was a great magazine, with very informative articles and advertisements of the latest equipment and gadgets.
Posted by Kevin Faulkner (Member # 6) on December 16, 2006, 05:21 PM:
And the Movie Maker review of the GS1200 was with my very own machine.
I had bought one of the first GS1200's and worked with the guy who did the review. When his turned up for him to do the review (which was over the Christmas holiday that year) it didnt work properly so he rang me to ask if he could use my machine which of course I jumped at. Sadly I sold that machine on some years back.
Kev.

Joe, I guess Movie Maker was the UK equivalent of Super 8 Film Maker, but not having seen the latter I don't know. However it was a highly respected publication and today provides a valuable resource for those of us interested in the history of our hobby, the test reports and film reviews are particularly interesting.
Keith, you have a pm, I think the email address you gave me might not be right as your test reports didn't get through.
So far, the most popular request has been for the Elmo ST 1200 HD, clearly a very popular machine. I'll update the list above when I have added some more reports to the list.
Regards
Mike

I used to love "Movie Maker" magazine. I used to eagerly await each issue and always read Bill Davison's "bootlace cinema" reviews and "Uncle" Ivan Watson's articles. Sadly I fear they have both gone to their rewards. I wonder if anyone tried Ivan Watson's film scratch removal method or his home Super 8 film copying system?

A very big thank you Mike.Brillant.Andy.

Anyone know what happened to Bill Davison?
Stuart
Posted by Mike Peckham (Member # 16) on December 17, 2006, 01:43 PM:
Stuart, I think Bill died in the late eighties, I don't know the circumstances of his death but it seems untimely...
I've been busy sending off scans to people today, the ST 1200 HD remains the most often requested, the Sankyo Stereo 800 the second.
I've had several requests for Bill Davisons reviews. I'm in the process of putting together an index of them all and when it's done (and I've finished scanning them ) I'll post the index on here in a seperate thread and email them out to people again on request.
Paul, are you thinking of Ivans magical plain water remedy?

I have just added another 12 equipment reviews to the above list. Same as before; if you want a scan of any of the reviews just pm me with an email address tell me which one/s you want and I'll get them off to you.
I now have all of Bills Bootlace Cinema reviews scanned from the period 1977 - 1982. I'm still working on an index though which is time consuming, but when it's completed I'll post it on here.

Thanks Mike,
I had a subscription to MM from 1977 to about 1981. As a schoolboy I could only dream of owning some of the kit in there. Now that I do it'll be great to see the reviews again.

Quick update; have just added the reviews from 1981 to the above list. Interestingly, the ST 1200 HD is still by far most often requested review!
Mike
Posted by Mike Peckham (Member # 16) on September 28, 2007, 12:47 PM:
Update:
Having scanned a number more reviews to send to people as they have been requested over the summer months, I thought it was time to update the list, so I have. The list in the first posting on this thread now represents all the equipment reviews I now have scanned.
If anybody wants one or more of them, just send me a pm with your list of wants and an email address I can send them too and I'll get them off to you in due course.
Also, I now have all of Bill Davisons Bootlace (and later Armchair Cinema) reviews scanned from his period with Movie Maker; Sep 1974 - Dec 1984.
All the above (both Bills reviews and the equipment reviews) can be fitted on to one 700mb disc so if anyone wants them all on a disc let me know and I'll give you an address to post a blank disc and an SAE to.

Hello Chaps
Just a quick update for everyone who has asked for discs, they should all be either with you now or on their way but possibly subject to the postal strike we currently have in the UK.
Those heading for a destination in the Antipodes and North America I think all made it out of the country before the strike began, however, one or two that were going to our friends in the UK and Europe (ok I know the UK is in Europe, but you know what I mean) might now be languishing in a postal sorting room somewhere.
I’d be grateful if you could let me know when they arrive, either by email or on here, hopefully I haven’t forgotten anyone.
Anyone else who would like a disc of the test reports and / or the film reviews from Movie Maker magazine is welcome to one, as before just send me a pm and I’ll let you have a postal address to send a disc and an SAE too. The files have actually increased in size now as I have added extra material at the request of a couple of people, so if you would like both (the reviews and the test reports) I will now need you to send me two discs.
For people living overseas for whom arranging an SAE etc. is difficult, I would need just enough money to cover the cost of the disc/s and postage, this you could send me via PayPal. Postage to pretty well anywhere in the world seems to come in at about £2.00 and for the discs I would need £1.00 each, so either £3.00 or £4.00 in total depending on whether you want just one or both.
Anyone wanting individual test reports from the list above can still send me an email address via pm with a list of wants and I’ll zap them off to you.

Have just added the Leicina Special to the list of cameras above.
If there is any interest in the earlier models of cameras and projectors, I might have another look at the earlier mags (1968 - 74) and add some more reports to the "data base" from that era.

Hello Chaps
Many of you will know that I have been “out of circulation” a bit recently due to our having moved into a property that we don’t intend to become our permanent address, consequently much of our personal stuff (including my pc, films and Movie Maker magazines) is in storage.
However, I am still getting a trickle of requests from this thread for test reports. Normally of course I would happily email them off individually or burn a disc for multiple requests, but I’m afraid I simply can’t do that at the moment. Having said that, whilst I was able I posted out more than 30 discs of all the files and sent off literally dozens of emails containing individual reports, so I’m hoping that if those people who currently want a particular report or information about a camera or projector post their request on this thread, some kind soul will email them the goodies?
Over to you…
Mike
Ps. Hopefully, normal service will be resumed shortly!
Posted by Mike Peckham (Member # 16) on August 24, 2008, 04:27 PM:
Update:
PC now out of storage and set up and running, so normal service can be resumed...
Sadly though, my films and most of my equipment is still in boxes and likely to stay there for the forseeable future.

Hi, Mike.
Only today have I discovered you are offering scans of film equipment reviews, and I must confess there are quite a lot of them I'd like to read. The ones I am most interested in at present are the following (listed in decreasing order of importance:
Sankyo XL-S Supertronic
Nizo Integral 5
Elmo GS 1200
Eumig 926, 932, 936, 938
Would you mind to send (some of) them at your earliest convenience? My email address is:

Hello Chaps
I've sent your scans off, if you could let me know they have arrived ok I'd be grateful.
David, as regards Bill Davisons reviews, I haven't yet found the time to do an index - I started but it's a formidable task! This will make emailing off individual reviews tricky unless you know in which month and year what you want appeared.
I am still happy to do complete discs for anyone that wants them, and as these discs have made their way to pretty well every continent in the world - you may even find someone closer by will copy one off for you to save on postage.
Whatever, I'd be happy to help.

In looking at your list again, may I please request reviews of the Elmo GS 1200 projector, the Kodak Ektasound projector and the Elmo editor?
I remember being rather unhappy with my old Ektasound, which I could never focus properly (when the edges of the picture were sharp the center was blurry, and vice versa), and I wonder what the review says?
Please send to David at jeffrichetti@yahoo.com, and thanks again.

If I may impose on your considerable good nature one more time, I'd appreciate the reviews of the Elmo 16 CL, the Yelco Stereo 3600 (mainly because I've never heard of Yelco!) and the Elmo ST 1200 user report.

Hi-Mike,
Thanks for checking for me,its strange they didnt bother with the very popular Chinon brand, probably too mass market for them??
A disc of Bill Davidsons reviews would be great though,I will send you my postal address via hotmail if thats ok.
I once had a pint with the late Bill Davidson at one of the BFCC Holburn fairs and he was a very nice chap indeed, always very enthusiastic about the hobby.
So thats another pint I owe you now!!

You're both welcome!
Mark W; sorry I haven't got your disc off to you yet, having problems with my burner - the draw is stuck shut with a disc in it. Every time I press the eject button it tries to eject it a couple of times and then starts playing the disc. Anyone got any ideas or possible solutions? I've tried pushing something sharp into the little hole that is supposed to trigger the release but that hasn't worked either...
If I can't fix it I'll have to transfer the files to an external hard drive and then upload them onto a different computer.

Hi Mike-
I'm finally chiming in here. Thanks for all the support services you give to fellow collectors!
I know you havent gotten around to the Bill Davison film reviews yet, but do you recall if he did a review for the Iver 2 x 400 release of "The Giant Spider Invasion"? I had heard somewhere that he had reviewed this, and I've always wanted to read it.
Thanks for checking.
James.

Thanks - that's what this forum is all about and we now have Jon Addams offering all the equipment reviews from '68 - '74 so between us all, we are building up a pretty good resource. As for Bill Davisons reviews, I haven't yet got round to completing an Index - it's a pretty formidable task - so not sure whether he ever reviewed that film. Watch this space though because there is a project in place at the moment that might make Bill Davisons reviews more readily available shortly.
Trev, the chances are I will have that artcle as I have all the Movie Maker Mags form '68 - '85. I'll have to dig them out though because they're currently in a box in the garage. I'll try and do it this weekend and let you know if I can find the article in question.

I've got the 1981 MM mags out and have had a look right through and there's no mention of Apollos Gizmo. Are you sure it was 1981?
I'll happily look at other years if you think it might have been somewhere else. Any thought?

Maybe it is just "early '80s,sorry Mike. I don't think it mentioned "Apollo" actually, just,an 8mm stereo-viewer from Hong Kong with a wee pic of a kid looking into it. I think it mentioned that the films available were boxing ones.About 10 years ago a guy put a couple of these viewers up on eBay.The auctions ended in the middle of the night and guess who slept through the critical minutes!!Trev

Scans all sent
There is an interesting project in progress at the moment with regards to all these scans, Kev is putting together an "Archive Disc" to make available to anyone who wants it and it will include all of Bill Davisons Film Reviews, the Equipment Test Reports form Movie Maker, Film Catalogues, Film Posters and more.
I have sent Kev a disc with all my scans on it and I know that Jon Addams and others have offered to do the same. Should you have anything you would like to offer I'm sure that Kev would be pleased to hear from you. It looks like being a very interesting and exciting resource.
With that in mind Kev has asked me to hold fire sending out full discs at the moment (ie, those that include all the equipment reviews, film catalogues and Bill Davisons Film Reviews) pending the arrival of the new "Archive Disc" that he is putting together.
I'm still happy to send out individual scans though, so if you know what you want contact me on here or by email and I'll email the scans off to you.
Watch this space, it looks like being an interesting project!

Posted by Terry Lagler (Member # 1110) on August 21, 2009, 12:00 PM:
Hi Kevin
Yes, the service manual would probably be best, but I was still curious to see what it had to say.
I'm not getting any sound - nada, not even a humm from the speaker. I've cleaned the sound head and it looks like it makes contact with the magnetic soundstripe on the film. I've also had the back open for lubrication and cleaning and it looks like all wiring is intact so it may be something more serious.
It's not a big deal if I can't get it working as I have a few sound projectors, it's just nice to bring a projector back from the dead.
Cheers

John,
send me a pm with an email address and I'll see what I can do. I have access to a friends (legitimate ) file sharing account, it might well be possible to upload the whole archive to it so that you can download it.
I think Kev has a lot on his mind at the moment, so it's probably unfair to expect him to make the disc any sort of priority, in which case I might see if I can make the Bootlace reviews available through the same route.

Hello fellas
I have sent out the reviews that have been requested but Michael I will need an email address to send yours to...
I am now in a position to upload the entire file with all the test reports to a file sharing site. As it is a friends account I am using he has asked that I get email addresses of everyone who will want access to the file for download so that he can send one notification out.
So, for those of you who would like to download all the test reports listed on page one of this thread, give me an email address that I can send you download details too.
I shall probably be sending out the notification at the end of this week so will need the addresses by then.
Should anyone like to have all the 8mm film reviews by Bill Davison, I will probably upload them too, once I have sent out all the test reports. So let me know if you're interested.
Mike

Posted by Mike Peckham (Member # 16) on January 06, 2010, 04:01 AM:
Paul
The CD is very much Kevin's project, I know he was keen to do it and I have supplied him with all the test reports from Movie Maker that I have and I know that Jon Addams was going to supply him with the earlier ones that he has scanned. I have also given him the scans of all of Bill Davisons 8mm package movie reviews from 1975 - 85 and a number of film catalogues too, so with that and what other people have offered it promises to be a great archive.
I understand that things have been tricky for Kev rercently though so he hasn't been able to get on with producing the cd. When I last emailed him he asked me to email out all the test reports and film reviews that people had been asking for because he wasn't sure when he would be able to get round to working on the cd.
I now have access to a friends file sharing web site so am offering to put all the test reports and 8mm film reviews on there for people to down load pending the arrival of the cd.
I shall probably open up a new thread to set out how we can go about it.
Maybe Kev could give us an update?

Mike: have you uploaded all scans online? One zip-file, instead of a CD sounds pretty good. Cheaper, and more convenient I´ll be more than happy to point you in a direction of a good sharesite, or use mine to share it.

I have just taken a look at this old thread and realise that there are some requests here that I never received, probably because I hadn't been keeping an eye on this forum.
However, over the years since I published the list I have continued to receive requests and I'm pretty sure I have responded to most of them.
If anyone is still looking for any of the reviews listed, send me a pm or put a note on this thread and I'll send them off to you.
There was a mention of creating a zip file with the whole lot on, I don't know how to do that, but if anyone wants to point me in the right direction, I'd be happy to persue that idea if it makes the reviews more accessible.

Hi Mike,
Years ago in DOS I used to use PKZIP.
In windows there is WINZIP and PKZIP. I think both of these are free and should be quite simple to use (from memory). I also remember most free CD ROM's on computer magazines used to contain WINZIP.

The Silma S101 projector is a nice projector, has a lot in common with Bauer projectors in the T180 series.
The problem with the silma S101 is that one of the gears falls aparts when these projectors get old. Luckily this problem can now easily be solved. These gears are now newly produced. See: http://shop.van-eck.net/PP-0045.html?_globalsearch=s101
