I sold a print of "Hobson's Choice" but has since been returned for having a sideways weave, I've come accross this before, and in most instances the stock is a little too wide, and on some machines like Elmo's where the gate isn't very generous, it can be quite annoying. My question is, is there anyone out there with an equaliser, these were sold to trim the edges of the film to precisely 8mm, they are used between rewind arms, if so could someone have a go at this print for me. If not local I'll pay all postage costs, because at the moment I have a decent feature, and on a lot of machines it will have this weave. If anyone can help then contact me at indi8films@aol.com .

I've had a rummage and I have actually found an 8mm equaliser, can any forum member give me any tips on using it, although I have found the instructions, I would like to hear from someone who has actually used one, but I'm determined to have a go, although I will most probably practice on some other film before tackling "Hobson's Choice".

Good luck Barry, shame when prints are like that, you never can tell etc.
As you say on smaller gate models its often not apparrent, elmos show the lot.

Barry, this is a strange one. It shouldn't show on an Elmo if its due to weave at slitting. The sprocket holes are on the outside of the super 16 wide material (most are printed 2 up and then slit down the middle) and the fixed runner on the Elmo's is also on the sprocket side. The flexible runner is on the slit side of the film so this should move in and out with any changes in film width. I haven't studied some of the other machines such as Eumigs, Sankyos, Noris etc but I would think they conform to the same std as laid down by the original Kodak specs.

Have you tried any lube on the film?

The only other thing I can think is that the film has weave due to manufacture. To stop any weave its the sprocket hole side of the film which has to be dead straight as this is the side not slit by the labs.

Hope I have explained that ok and that it makes sense?

Yes it makes sense, but I've an idea this print was produced using the quad system (like the optical prints), where 4 prints are made side by side on 35mm stock, and I have seen this before on quad prints (especially from Techno films in Italy) where there is some weaving on some of the prints, anyway I'll give it a go, as the collector I sold it to did use some cleaning fluid on 3 of the reels with little difference. I'm going to practice 1st though with some silent film I've got, and when I'm confident I'll give "Hobson's Choice" a go, it may not improve it, it may even be printed in, but I'll find out later on.
