I just thought I would open a topic where "jealousy and envy" can run rife!
My best two bargains to date are -

JOLSON STORY - 7 x 400ft in a Blue Leatherette box with each spool in its own sleeve, still shrink wrapped. The Columbua logo on the box beneath the film title. Price - £52.00. [Big Grin]

TOM THUMB - 4 x 600ft, again brand spanking new -£57.00. [Big Grin]

Are there any other lucky punters out there?
(Obviously we have to keep this in context - what one collector considers a bargain [Smile]

another may think is a "Rip-Off" [Frown]

- at the end of the day it comes down to personal satisfaction) [Wink]

Perhaps we should keep the list to "features only", to maintain a "level Playing field" - I'll leave it up to you guys? [Smile]

Where do I start? Because of ebay, I have come across so many great deals. Most of my Blackhawk films I have gotten for a few dollars at most. When it comes to feature films, Most of the features I buy come to me on 800 or 1200ft reels, and being that i can't use 800 and up reels, (I prefer 600ft.) I tend to sell those reels.

For instance, two months ago I bought a print of "Flying Tigers"(John Wayne) on two very rare beautiful 1200ft. silver metal ELMO reels. I paid 24.95 for film and reels together. I sold the reels for a combined amount of 42.00. Not only did I end up getting the feature film for free, but made a twenty dollar profit.

Or how about when I bought my Eumig Mark S mag/optic projector for 30.00, or my Eumig stereo926 mag for 100?

I must say, if not for ebay, I certianly wouldn't have the film collection that I have today!

Interesting one this.
Think the nicest item I got was the new Eumig 926GL which had not been used. It was offered to me for £50, but the lady also had some old family films he she not seen for 40 years on 9.5mm film. I offered to transfer these to dvd for her and she was over the moon. Its nice to do a good deed and the thank you telephone call I received afterwards for his free transfer was very nice.

The machine was later converted to 2 blade shutter and performs very well. I think of her phone call every time I use it.

Ignoring free stuff given to me, One bargain I remember was buying a green plastic CIR super-8 splicer for £2.50 at a boot sale not realising at the time how collectable they were. Unfortunately over time the grey plastic arm broke and had to be glued back. It still works fine though but I would sell it if I bought the metal version.

Perhaps not my best, but the cheapest I ever bought were a bunch of Super 8 sound one-reelers in a charity shop for just twenty pence (UK) each!

None were really to my taste but most were in nice condition and Futtock's End alone sold for £18 on eBay! At least I was able to use the money for films I did want.

I think the best bargain for me was a lovely Standard 8 print of Clarence Brown's eight-reel The Goose Woman (1925)on eBay for £15.

Keith,

I wish I could say who manufactured "Flying Tigers" for you. The film did not come in it's original boxes, and the leader doesn't say anything as well.

One of the nifty things about the print, (besides it's really great contrast, which is sometimes iffy on black and white early classics), is that it has the original opening logo's. This is the original Republic Pictures logo with the building in the background. Very Nice.

I must say, I have had incredible luck on most of my optical sound super 8 film prints. There's only a few that I have paid more than 100.00 dollars american for, (and most of the prints were 50 dollars or less.), and so I have a rather large collection at a fraction of the cost.

Now, buying Revenge of the Sith .... that's another whole kettle of fish altogether.

Without a doubt my best ebay bargain was my Eumig S938 Stereo, virtually unused mint condition, for $199.00! The previous owner had obviously tried to run Standard 8 film through it, as there was a piece left in the gate. I suspect he gave up on the machine when it would'nt run standard 8, and that was the only running it ever got.

I scored 3 full boxes of Blackhawk super 8 features, columbia cut downs, many 3 Stooges 400ft'ers all for $10 a box at a yard sale last year. Found a Sankyo Sound 500 at an estate sale for $20. Now I pay through the nose for the stuff I Like! [Smile]

The very first thing I ever bought on E-bay was a Minolta XL-401: Buy it Now for $9.99 (!)

It was cheap and un-bid because the seller thought it was broken.

His E-bay ad. made me think he didn't understand the camera so I bought it. (Had to register myself first: I was sweating hoping nobody else beat me to it!)

I was right, it was fine and I've been using it 6 years now. It's my prime travel camera and I've filmed with it from one shore of the Pacific all the way around to the other, with more than a few stops in between.

Items that come to mind is.
CIR Super8 tape splicer in original box with tape mint condition £1.00 from a charity shop.
Sound of Music 3x6ooft in original boxes mint condition £30.00 from the bring & Buy stall Ealing
Oh Mr Porter 4x400ft Walton mint condition including the origal boxes £16.00 from e-bay.
I know this is not film orintated but a Raymond Wiel Swiss watch valued after I bought it at £250.00 bought for £3.00 from a charity shop.
Keep looking for a GS1200 in the charity shops or car boot sales but nothing so far.

Dealer had a lot of Blackhawk shorts, some Castle, Perry, Griggs, Columbia, Coronet and others, most in sharp boxes, some cans; Condition so-so on a few, luckily the longer shorts were tops, though there was a $200 pricetag for eighteen shorts, I heckled a bit, traded some old bulletins and catalogs, even my prize edition print of the 'scored' General (killiam), he was so happy he threw in a couple of sound comedies to boot - Not a bad barter, now the search continues...Shorty

Car boot sale purchase of a box of 8 Walton 200fters, all sound and in their original boxes and in great shape, plus a chinnon sound projector. £10 the lot

4 x feature films in their original vinyl cases; That's Entertainment, West Side Story, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Easter Parade. £80 the lot from a local photographic shop.

I'd love to have a few more finds like that [Roll Eyes]

This will sound silly, but I think the bargain around is this forum...and others like it...where for absolutely no cost collectors can convene...get vital information ...exchange jokes and tidbits....and buy and sell films and equipment. It's a huge bargain and it's available 24/7. How can you beat that?

I just remembered that I bought a print of "Battlestar Galactica" (2X400) from the U.K. for 4.99 (ironic, as I just bought a print of "High palins drifter" (2X400) for the same amount), but with "Battlestar", the seller said that the colour was perfect. I thought I'd take a chance.

I already had a print of this title, but it has a little fade.
I was astounded to get Battlestar with absolutely pristine colour. So I decided to sell my fading print of Battlestar.

Now remember, I paid U.K. $4.99 for my good print of Battlestar.

What did i sell my fading print for?

30.00 dollars!!!!

Not only did I have a better print, but even made a profit on it!!

(The irony was that the person who bought my fading Battlstar, (and I said it fading in the description), was in the U.K.!)

Talk about a reel deal!!!!

So far my lucky bargain was a GS-800 for $125 (fully working but now dead due to broken belt).

A GS-1200 for $80 bought in Indonesia (my home country) by my brother. Unknown condition because I have not returned home since then.

A long time film shooter in Ontario contacted me to sell his Eumig 610Dlux, an ELMO super 106 camera, GOKO dual Editor, Transfer box, book, reel, etc for $55.

I think I posted all above finds in separate threads here and there, but let us see what is your bargain find recently as Keith's original post.

I bought a 'Mystery' bundle for about £8, there was one standard 8, a few 200 footers then two full 400ft reels, I put them on, what where they 'Dodge City' not a scratch or blemish on them and good colour too. Sometimes it's worth dipping in, I'm glad I did, what a bargain...

Similar to you Andrew a Wurker splicer for £5.00 and a Canon XL camera for £15.00. In terms of super 8 I bought two Sanyko 800 for £200 when a collector died and his widow was selling up. When I went to collect I received an third working projector and a fourth for parts gratis she had found in a cupboard.

That cost me a fiver and was from a very generous forum member here.

I have also received quite a few " bits and bob's " from many a kind hearted member on here absolutely free of charge!

Almost everything from the Walton last day sale, for example I think the 400ft "Please Sir" test print was 50p or £1 . Also a couple of projectors from BFCC a Eumig 905 £5 with working lamp and a Sankyo 301 (minus take-up spool hub) for the same price (good source of spares for my other one).

Selling my features of Please Sir, Fright and That'l be the day to name only a few and all these were great prints with excellent colour. What was i thinking,
Other bargains though were,
Hannie Caulder 4 x 400ft,(although with some lines) for £20
Escape from Alcatraz 3 x 400ft for £35
The Warriors 3 x 400 ft for £30
The Fog full length scope for just £75.
A little story behind a couple of the title, these came from my dear friend and local dealer many years ago Roger Lily from the loony movie co aka a couple of other names over the years, Roger did not like to sell what he called modern horror or violent films so when the last two titles came in he would call me to let me know he had them and wasn't keen to put them out on his list so offered them to me for great prices. Having said that, back then this was still serious money for me. I still have most of the films i bought from Roger in our collections.
He died so many years before his time [Frown]

Roger Lilley Moveland International a true Gentleman. He had some abhorrence of horror movies but you could trade movies with him on his lists for little money and postage. A rarity amongst dealers. He released a few feature releases in the 1980s.

Whereabouts was he based?

Roger released Riddle in the Sands and a couple of other features Mark Silvester will proberably know more as he is so much older than me ha ha! Roger was Plymouth based not to be mistaken with Ron Browning who ran Dane Films/ Highgate Films at Indian Queens Cornwall lovely address shame about him.

There was also Pinedene Film with Mr Smith in Southampton which was an aladdins cave of every film gauge.

He released a lot of Betty Boop cartoons and titles that you never got anywhere else. He was far too trusting and got a his titles bootlegged which killed his sales.

Wow, this thread is an eye-opener! Every time collectors moan about scratches and fade and how terrible eBay is, they neglect to mention all these great deals and bargains they got. I think eBay evens out if you buy regularly, in fact.

GS Xenon, mine was only £2.99! but it was 'collection only' and it was MacMurdo base, Antarctica. Had to use a sled and a team of dogs to get it back but I did get a signed photo from Kurt Russell. [Eek!]

I did have some bargains from derann, but although I had a ringside seat, the demise was and still is sad, at least I can say they went to a good home, and were not bought to sell on for gain, £5.00 for anamorphic lens, complete, and a GS1200 toolkit £2.50 to name but a few things.

Movieland International, aka,looney movie co aka Plymouth home movie centre aka aarchive film productions. Roger also produced many local history documentary's on Video, we actually did a production which Roger helped us produce and filmed & released into the shops.
My Brother is an amateur historian and this was his first video release.
Roger had a cine shop for a very short time in Liskeard in the main high street, but he lived and was based in Plymouth. His first shop was Cathcart Avenue in Laira, then onto Liskeard and when he returned to Plymouth he bought a lovely house in Jennycliff where he has a garage converted into his cinema and cine business. I very often would ring up on a Saturday and if he had a collection in we were always invited around to have a pick of the bunch.
BTW. Roger main job was a lecturer in Business studies at Plymouth University. Take a look at this and click the continue button on the web site.

I have never, ever, seen cine films at a car boot sale. I did get my Agfa Sonector from one though, £3. I didn't need to change the bulb for about 15 years.

Slightly off topic, but I went to a film fair in Sheffield about 20 years ago and there was a dealer selling original posters of the Hammer double bill She and One Million Years BC. He had about a dozen, mint and rolled up, for £5 each. I bought one (I was a student at the time) and have it framed... I've seen them sell for over a hundred now.

My best to date was a Sankyo 702 complete with a 1.0 Hi-Pro lens. Given to me for free from my old place of work Mercedes-Benz UK, where it was used in the past in their Training Centre. Hardly used and in beautiful condition. I still have it. They also gave me some 16mm training films, some of which I still have as well.

Recently my son purchased a DeJur P1010 custom 8mm Projector for me. He was much impressed with the aesthetic condition of this 50+ year old machine. Also since these machines rarely come up for sale. Hope he took the right decision.

Not sure whether this falls under the 'Best Bargain' category since he paid a whopping $50. May be this might be the Worst Bargain ever. [Confused]

Yesterday the machine came in by post. This is what my son purchased for me. Have a look:-

The machine looks beautiful. Although as per the Ad, the projector was supposed to be in working order but that wasn't the case.

The projector when put on initial test the motor only made a humming noise and the motor started to smell and smoke (due to high arcing at the carbon brushes) without the armature turning. On switching off the machine and checking I found that the main worm shaft was jammed at one end due to hardening of old grease. The belt being old had starched and needed replacement. It also needed some general maintenance. Once the machine was serviced by fresh greasing and oiling, the machine performed like almost new. Took me 2 hours to get the machine in perfect running condition, but it was worth the effort. It runs astonishingly smooth and very silent. The machine seems to have been hardly used over the years.

I am very happy to have this beautiful and excellent machine. I can now say this is one good bargain. [Smile]

Panayotis, we also purchased GWTW from Paul many years ago, that's one was also £250, one of the very best prints we have. This is a title my Brother went to see in the cinema years ago over and over again, i think he lost count of how many times he went.
Out of the blue i rang Paul to ask if it was a film he got in many times and as pure luck would have it he said, and i quote
"believe it or not i am looking at a print i just bought in".
It was sold there and then [Wink]
