Hi.
I recently bought a Noris Norisound 310 off eBay and it really works fine, except for two things: I tried to watch a ~80m (~26ft ?) reel and it worked... until it reached the ~60m (~20ft ?) mark. Then the reel (the second one - the one the film is drawn to... Ôo oh my, my english...) "jams" or simply stops. I can only keep on watching the film if I turn the reel by hand, otherwise the film comes streaming out the back but is not "rolled up", because the reel doesn't turn. If I push it, it turns on for some seconds, then it stops again. What can I do?
Also if I want to reverse the film and wind it up on the first reel, it goes *swoosh* - the first reel turns at normal speed, but the second one is turning like mad and I got celluloid salad all over the floor. What am I doing wrong?

This problem sounds to be either a take up clutch problem, or perished spool drive belt, if any.

If the take up clutch is dirty then it will stick, slow down, or stop completely, when taking up the extra torque caused by the weight of film on the spool.
After cleaning the clutch, if it is made of nylon, then it should be run dry, as nylon is supposed to be self lubricating.
If made of metal with a cork lining, or washer, then a small film of grease, or petroleum jelly, can be applied.

If the problem appears to be the take up belt, then it will have to be renewed. If this is a chain drive there may be some method of taking up any slack that might be present.

It may be very well possible that dirt is the cause - when I got the projector, it looked horrible. I spent a whole day cleaning it to make it look like it is now.

This seems to be exactly what happens. But (sorry) which part do you exactly mean with the take up clutch (I got an idea, but don't know if I'm correct)?

What confuses me is the rewind-problem. The thing is, the back reel turns extremely fast when rewinding the film, the front reel turns at normal speed (the same speed it turns when watching the film). The moment the last bit of film leaves the projector, the front reel (now with the whole film on it) speeds up to the speed of the back reel.
What I want to say by this: now the reel doesn't seem to have a problem with the film-weight, but somehow the film seems to "stick" inside the projector. The back reel is pushing and pushing, but the front reel is unable to pull the film until it leaves the casing, then it speeds up.
Why can the reel transport the film in one direction, but not the other? And why does, now that I changed the direction the film is supposed to go, the other reel seem to have a problem of some kind?

This all confuses me and makes me think that it's not the projector that got a problem, but me doing something wrong.

Ok, sound seems to be broke as well. Now I got my first non-silent movie but the speaker does nothing but humm. Again: is it the projector or am I pressing the wrong buttons and switches?
There's a knob labeled "Trick", don't know what that's for. I can switch between Record and Trick with a second knob. Trick and Volume are adjustable and I can push them as well. Turning Trick doesn't do anything noticable, Volume changes the volume of the humm, although the humm stops the moment the reel turns. Pushing Volume turns on the light next to the Record-label - so that's recording I guess - but what's the switch to select Record and Trick for? Or: what IS Trick?

Trick mode is for doing double recordings. This means that with it in trick mode you can record another soundtrack such as commentary over the top of the existing recording. It partially erases the original recording while recording the new one of the top therefore combining the two.

This was useful in the days of sound cameras as it allowed people to shoot in sound then apply more sound once the film came back from processing.

I got the sound working now. Some cleaning the audio-head did the job [Smile]

Only the reel-problem remains.

Ok, the Problem with the stopping reel solved itself - it just doesn't appear anymore. Or at least at the moment. I was able to watch the 120m cut of Jaws 2 without any Problems (only that the whole film is nearly completely red... or is it the blood? [Big Grin]

). We got lots of stuff at the place where I work (a hospital), doing this - making problems one moment, the next second they just work fine, as if nothing happened. "Technische Selbstheilung" (technical self-healing), as we call it [Big Grin]

I am optimistic that the rewind-problem will do soemthing similar too [Cool]

Perhaps the whole mechanical parts of the machine were a bit "sticky" after obviously having been stuffed away on some forsaken attic for the last twenty years and now they start loosening [Cool]
