I'm wondering what screen sizes Forum members use for their S8 film shows. My home cinema screen is matt white and I use a 3-way RF controlled power masking system. I find a 3-way system (the third masking panel drops down from the top) is a lot simpler to implement than a 4-way system. My screen mask widths are as follows:

Academy, 1.33:1, 65 ins
Widescreen 16:9, 89 ins
CinemaScope 2.35:1 108 ins

I use these sizes for both S8 and digital projection. When you get out this wide with S8 CinemaScope you start to feel the need for a Xenon version of the GS1200. I have converted my GS to a 2 blade shutter and I use the Elmo f1.0 lens. Even so the brightness on my 108 ins screen is best described as adequate.

Super 8 48" wide
16mm 58" wide
VP ( sorry ) 94"-100" wide.( 4/3 etc)

Though I do occasionally do the super 72" wide and the 16mm 94" wide as well.But its a struggle at that with the 100 watt lamp for the super.

Paul, I project onto a painted sheetrock wall. Painted with matt white paint. Right now I am masking it with thin black cloth. The top valence is stationary as is the bottom cloth. The two side panels are manually removable for scope and an extra bottom piece can be added for scope. The dimensions are: Flat 8'x6' - Scope is 12'x4'. My GS-1200 hundred has the factory shutter, but the room is literally pitch dark and with the 1.0 lens scope is very adequate.
Soon I will replace the side matts with decorative curtains on a pull string curtain rod. These will be closed when not projecting and can be opened to any width up th 12 feet wide. a remote controled can be added later.

This is me hypnotizing the viewers.

Hi Paul
Just finished making the screen larger by adding an extra three and a half inches on the bottom, the screen is made from custom wood, the reason was to make it the right size for a 40mm lens on the B/H.

Academy, 72 inches 16mm, Super8, and VP.
Widescreen, 1:85 90 inches mainly used for VP, and the Ernemann 2, 35mm projector now 80yrs old.
Scope, still working that one out scince the screen mod is just finished should be about 110 inches.

Paul, I remember the pics of you screening room. Wow! Very nice. And those motorized matts are super. At the moment I have to share my screening room with five homemade racks of 16mm films. The super 8s are in an adjoining room(office). graham it must be a real treat putting you screening room together from scratch.

Mark, the films in the pics are 16mm. All types from features to shorts, cartoons and educationals.

Dan, mine is a sheetrock screen...10 feet wide.....I used to have it painted with standard matt white paint...HOWEVER, if you have not tried Steve Osbourne's screen paint, you should. I am not exaggerating when I say it upped the reflectance and improved the whiteness by 20%. It takes three coats...the first two can be done same day...and then , for best results , the third coat after about three days. My wife, who isn't in the screening room very much , even commented that the screen, even when nothing is projected on it, was much more luminescent. I can vouch for that screen paint he sells. It was so good, I bought another batch and painted the outdoor 17 screen with it...and what a huge difference. That, plus the osram xenophot lamp in the st1200HD..plus the f1.1 lens made the presentation of super 8 scope on that big screen not only possible, but very very good. Can't recommend it highly enough.

My screen is 4 ft high by 12.5 feet wide. I used one coat of Wal*Mart flat white interior latex paint. It is important to know that, if you have a true theater screen so the speakers are behind it, that it can not be brushed or the holes will be clogged. Thin it down with water, and ROLL it.

Its a lot of fun making a home cinema, and it does not need to cost much, a lot of material I used came from salvage yards, its one of those projects that never seems to end, and its always interesting to read what others have done.

Talking about screens..
Since visiting a friend who had just completed making his new scope screen from MDF, has anyone else tried this new LumiTec technology paint from Dulux? Since seeing his we are all repainting with it around here and the results are first rate and much better than the old Screen paint. Only two coats, a perfect pure white finish and it reflects 2 times more light!

LumiTec anyone?

PS: My super 8 screen is 6ft in a moderate size room at home for normal flicks. Not scope. With a good blackout due to blackout blinds in two rooms (Screen 1 Family viewing & 2 For 15's + only & Scope) I find my Stereo Eumig projector with 2 blade shutter just fine. I dust off the GS machines for specila viewers.
